I'LL STILL GO TO AFGHANISTAN

By Dan Woottom

X FACTOR favourite Ryan Idzi has revealed he will fight in Afghanistan even as he attempts to launch his music career.

Millions of viewers saw the Iraq war hero wow Dannii and the other judges with his emotional rendition of Lean On Me. He was sent straight through to boot camp.

And he told the emotional story of how he lost two close mates during the conflict.

But Ryan from South Wales - who has been serving for six years - told the News of the World he is planning to stay in the army while competing on the show.

"The army has been amazing and given me time off for the show. I warned them in advance that I was competing and they gave me as much time off as I needed," he revealed.

"But I'm due to go to Afghanistan in the near future and I still plan to go to fight for my country.

"Singing has always been my hobby and the army has always been my job.

"Of course I want to have a number one single and album but if I can do both then I will."

Despite braving terrible conditions in Iraq, Ryan said that facing Simon Cowell still made him nervous.

He said: "Facing Simon and the panel was definitely scarier than going to Iraq. I told Simon that and he found it hilarious.

"Iraq is my job and I feel I should never go out there with fear.

"But the conditions out there are definitely ten times worse than they appear on TV.

"The conditions are tough and the heat is unbearable. It's what I signed up for though."

Ryan told how he is still grieving for his two friends.

"You expect it but I haven't got over it. I still feel grief. It's a really bad point."

His fellow soldiers have been very supportive about his singing ambitions.

"None of the guys believed me when I told them I was auditioning," he said.

"But when they worked out I was I did get a bit of stick and niggles."

Single Ryan disclosed he's looking for a girl and thinks Dannii, who described him as "gorgeous", was the one for him.

"I've had lots of offers since the publicity around the show started but I'm looking for a genuine girl and I think she'd be perfect.

"I was very taken by her. Of course she's a gorgeous girl but her personality also shines through. I'm hoping someone will set me up."
