GERM WARFARE!

If you thought virals were just funny pics and movies you emailed on to your mates... think again.

Those amusing clips of talking cats that brighten up a dull Tuesday afternoon in the office are now being turned into ART - and no-one's immune.

A team of viral experts from website BoreMe.com and Channel 4 have teamed up to sift through the best of the funnies to find the world's favourite for this year's viral awards comp Germ.

The top of the crop will be put on show at London's uber-hip Institute of Contemporary Arts - and we've got a fantastic selection here.

If you reckon you can do better, send your entries to www.channel4.com/germ by March 31. There are three categories - Best Video Viral, Best Image Viral and Best Interactive Viral.

Prizes range from commissions for Channel 4 (budgets up to £2,000) to showcasing at London's ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts), on Channel 4.com, 4Talent and BoreMe.com; plus all manner of goodies from PSPs (including Sid Meier's Pirates game for PSP), to Logic3 i-Station8 speakers for your iPod, to a year's subscription to Dazed magazine.

Last year’s winners included Neil Hepburn, who won the Best Still Image Viral with this:

And Dick Thompson, who won the Best Video Viral with this:

From March 31st, the Germ judging panel, made up of prominent practitioners from the online and broadcast industries, will select a shortlist of finalists whose entries will be posted on www.channel4.com/germ.

From the beginning of April, the public will be able to vote for a winner from each category. Winners will be announced early in May.

We may not all know much about art - but we know what makes us laugh!
