SEA THE STARS RETIRES

Oxx announces that wonder-horse has called it a day

WONDER-HORSE Sea The Stars's glittering career is over.

The winner of an unprecedented six straight Group One races this season has been retired as a three-year-old after capturing the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe earlier this month.

Trainer John Oxx issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that his star turn would not be participating in the Breeder's Cup Classic in November because of his workload during the campaign.

"We feel it is unfair to keep him going any further given his unprecedented record of achievement in the last six months," Oxx said in a statement.

"He's come out of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in his usual good form. He is fit and healthy and has been cantering since the race.

"He is now retiring from racing but I have no information on stud career details and an announcement will be made at a much later date when plans have been finalised."

Some pundits reckon Sea The Stars to be the greatest of all-time but the News of the World's Alistair Down only rates him in his top six ever.

"The horse developed a great public following - everybody quickly realised they were watching something special," Oxx told At The Races.

"There's been great excitement every time he's run from Sandown onwards. He got tremendous support from the crowd, racing public and wider public towards the end when they realised something special was happening."
