John Oxx's wonder-horse produced an astonishing turn of foot that thrilled the Longchamp crowd as they realised they were witnessing greatness before their very eyes.
Mick Kinane did not panic on the favourite, sent off at odds of 4/6, as he calmly pushed his colt through to clinch a comfortable two-length victory ahead of Kieren Fallon's Youmzain, a 20/1 shot.
"It's wonderful that it's over," said Oxx. "It's just a great relief.
"Mick would not panic because this horse has the gears.
"That's what any jockey will tell you. If the horse has the speed and the gears, he will get himself out of trouble."
Kinane paid tribute to a horse that has now won the Arc, the Derby and the Guineas.
"He's a phenomenal horse," the jockey said simply. He was not kidding.
Cavalryman was third, a head clear of Conduit, but this race was only about one horse in the end.
