‘Tacky’ Brit handover ceremony slammed

Thousands deluge BBC with complaints

THE BBC has been flooded with obscene complaints from angry viewers after the embarrassing handover ceremony on Sunday.

There were at least 200 comments that had to be censored because they were too offensive to print on the company’s website forums.

And forums were so heavily used that some had to be closed down to set up new ones.

With comments ranging from ‘tacky’ to ‘a shambles’, viewers poured in with their remarks about London Mayor Boris Johnson’s handling of the Olympic flag as well as Leona Lewis’ duet with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page.

Londoner Robert Smith said: “Perhaps we should give in and let the French have the Olympics? It’s a sad day when I believe that any other country in the world could have done better than we did – truly awful.”

Margaret Banes, from Liverpool, said: “To say I was embarrassed is an understatement.

“Our ceremony was nothing less than tacky; and my goodness, how did Boris Johnson look.

“The song Leona Lewis sang sounded dreadful. David Beckham looked so embarrassed too. I wish I could turn back time and I'd put on a much better show myself.”

A BBC spokesman said: “It certainly attracted a huge amount of interest. Not all the comments were negative but the majority of people had strong feelings that a change needs to be made for the 2012 opening ceremony.

“It's great that people are making their views known.”
