LEWIS HAMILTON was never headed in the Singapore Grand Prix after making the most of his surprise pole position to confidently secure a victory that was never really in any doubt.

The Brit finished ahead of Timo Glock and Fernando Alonso with Sebastian Vettel disappointed to only finish fourth after mounting some kind of challenge to the race leader.

"It was a very, very tough race," said Hamilton. "I got a good start and I just managed to bridge a big enough gap.

"I have to say a big 'thank you' to my team for doing a great job as always."

Although McLaren star Hamilton took the honours, his fellow countryman Jenson Button also had cause for celebration by extending his lead in the championship with a hard-earned fifth spot after starting in 11th off the grid.

With Rubens Barrichello one place behind him, Button now leads the Brazilian by 15 points with only three races remaining.

Red Bull's Vettel was handed a drive-through penalty after speeding in the pit-lane and that scuppered his chances of glory while team-mate Mark Webber crashed out with a braking problem.

Adrian Sutil and Nick Heidfeld collided which brought the safety car out but there was no distracting Hamilton who plundered his 11th career win with Glock of Toyota a pretty distant second.

Button was pleased to end a difficult week with a positive result, saying: "It was a good race for me and I'm happy with fifth position and four more points.

"The weekend hasn't been quite what we expected but it's good to come through from 11th on the grid to score points. I'll go to Japan on Monday feeling very positive and looking forward to the next race."

Barrichello is refusing to be too downhearted despite finishing one place behind his title rival.

"My brakes were struggling and I couldn't fight anymore so we came home with sixth position," he stated.

"It could have been a better weekend but I only lost a point to Jenson in the championship despite everything that happened so I'm staying positive."
