Stoke fear matter of when not if he rejoins Reds

RIO FERDINAND'S stuttering form will prompt Sir Alex Ferguson to buy back Ryan Shawcross.

Stoke defender Shawcross left Old Trafford at the start of 2008 in a £1million deal.

But Ferguson has monitored his progress and nearly re-signed the 21-year-old defender during the summer.

Now, the Old Trafford boss will have to decide whether to move for Shawcross in the January window or wait until the end of the season.

And if misgivings about the performances of Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic continue, Ferguson could be tempted to act sooner rather than later.

Shawcross would be eligible to feature in the Champions League knockout stages.

When Ferguson sold Shawcross, he insisted on a clause that means Stoke must give United first option on the player. A host of big clubs - including Liverpool - have shown a major interest in Shawcross, who is not without a chance of being called up for England's friendly against Brazil in Doha.

Should one of those clubs make a bid that Stoke find too hard to resist, United must be given the chance to match it.

Otherwise, Ferguson will have to make his own bid. It would be in the region of £8m - a figure that seems low but takes into account the significant sell-on clause that United also put in the original Shawcross deal.

Ferguson is sure to address the issues at the centre of his defence, and Shawcross has established himself as one of the Premier League's most reliable performers.

The feeling at Stoke is that it's not a matter of if Shawcross rejoins United . . . it's when.

£8M for pure class like Shawcross when run-of-the-mill Lescott goes for £20M+
Wake up and smell the coffee Ferguson.
Up the Potters!

Let's all ignore the fact that Ryan has very recently committed his long term future to Stoke shall we

The lad is a rising star and I have no idea how upson and lescott are ahead of him but he wants and needs 1st team football week in week out and that's what he is getting here. You lot think he would be better at a big club but at Stoke we are always under pressure and the result is that ryan is getting better and better. He wouldn't improve so fast if he wasn't under so much pressure.

£23m for Lescott = Joke

how can you people say evans is a good defender he is slow and none responsive as for ferdinand well if fergie has found out about his plans for spain then sell him on what i want to know is when is fergie gonna get rid of all the deadwood thats at united the likes of neville and evans ,oshea is shocking ,nani is no ronaldo, hargreaves is a sicknote like saha was and the worst is bebatov what a waste of money he was give macheada a chance put some spark back in the team for christ sake s

they need to give Evans a chance to play, I think he can make a good combination with Vidic at the center and Evra at the left and Oshea or Rafael or Brawn right. I am positive that they will get over it soon, what the need to do is to focus and play their game with no fear, if they fear to make mistake they can do it extra easy and I mean extra easy because they are not free with what they are doing.

Yes Man utd needs to re-enforce the defence line,Rio's form has gone down.

The criticisms against Rio only go to show how short people's memories can be.For Christ's sake that guy has been carrying a nagging back injury which has obviously affected his form. Why have we so quickly forgotten the impressive displays of the last two seasons that produced two champions league finals and two premier league titles among a host of other achievements?

If Ferdinand is past his best who will replace him in the England team?

Yeah ManUtd playing is borrrring, last season they were the best team in the world in my opinion, highest cleansheet, alot of goal in every game, they were playing with style, now look at them, they move like robots, conceaded too many goals, score one goal per game, just compare them with chelsea or barca, u enjoy watching them playing, how the pass how they create chances, but manutd now are boring, i don't enjoy watching them at all.

Shawcross and Evans would make a solid partnership, no doubt there, but Rio has at least 4 or 5 more years at the top left. But United need cover in the centre of defence and in attacking midfield/upfront, because Evans, Welbeck, Macheda, the Da Silvas and Darron Gibson need to have less pressure on them, otherwise they may not fufill their obvious potencial.

Good player I think he will be back Stoke or Man U tough decision????

For me, i think Ferdy's inconsistency in the team is psychological and drastic measures need to be adopted by Fergy inorder to salvage united out of the defensive mess.

why would ryan want to go to a place with plastic fans when he can play in front of the best fans in the world

now if man city came in for him i could understand him going
after all they are the big boys now

I think that Ryan Shawcross is very good young star for united. Ferguson should let him back to Old Trafford again. He can replace Rio and Vidic especially Rio. I can't beleive that Rio would pass the top of his career. He's just 31-year-old. For the defender position is not too old.Maldini can be the good exemple. However Ryan will be the strong future for united. But now I feel impressive for Gabi Oberton against Blackburn match. Although he would get a big miss to score. But I'm confident that he will be better to become the superstar like Ronaldo in united. Pls focus at him the next match.

shawcross has been outstanding again for stoke his form is right up there with the best in the country and hes quicker than upson and terry

The defence doesn't concern me as much as the rest of the team, Evans & Brown did just fine yesterday. Man Utd are starting to play like the Arsenal of the 90's just doing enough to win, I find watching the likes of Arsenal, Villa and Wigan more enjoyable than Utd at the moment. Nani will never live up to expectation, Valencia needs to do more and the teams general play is very poor. At least Berbatov is starting to do well, Oberaton could be a potential and the twins need to bulk up to be better.

I don't think this is Bad spell

I remember reading a story about ferdy heading to spain this summer, He has businesses over there and was said to be joining one of the big 2, that was the talk at the beginning of the season.

could this be that fergie found out, He kept a good lid on ronaldo move, this could be the reason ferdy is distracted.

Im sure somethings going on behind the scenes. hope not, but makes you wonder why the glum face and the teams gel seems strange this season, something is just not right.

By angus cooney. Posted November 1 2009 at 4:27 AM.

Nothing wrong with Vidic's form, he is rock solid. Yes, Ferdinand is having a bad spell, big deal, he will come through it! why don't the London media get off his back!

By Dillis. Posted November 1 2009 at 12:32 AM.

Good defender ... better than rio's playing atm, thou not ready for england team yet, terry and upson have been good enough

By Luke B. Posted November 1 2009 at 12:41 AM.

Let's hope that Ryan and Danny Collins get called up by John Toshack for Wales soon. Their form merits is.
