THERE is a lengthening queue checking on 13-goal Jermaine Beckford.

But he is not the only player Leeds may eventually have to fight to keep.

The striker got another two goals and could have had five, but 18-year-old Fabian Delph shared the limelight.

The England Under-19 midfielder made both goals for Beckford in a mature performance beyond his years.

Delph is a Robinho look-alike with the running, touch, vision and tricks to play a much higher level — and maybe he will get there with third-placed Leeds.

Gary McAllister’s side were impressive and Delph was outstanding with his engine and appetite for the ball.

Boss McAllister said: “He is an exciting talent, very competitive and has a great little edge to his game.

“We’ve just got to coax him along — we don’t have to tell him a lot and this is an ideal place for him to learn.”

In fact, it was a bit of a school lesson for Brighton, with Delph and Aidan White, the left-back who only turned 17 on Friday, making the second goal. That came in first-half added time and so did the first goal — a fine volley from Argentine Luciano Becchio.

Delph was involved from one end of the field to other for the entire game.

McAllister said: “It’s great to see a young player with the hunger, desire and pace to go from box-to-box.”

Then, in the 89th minute, the brilliant Delph created the third for Beckford. The goals have filled the 24-year-old — who is being linked with Newcastle — with confidence and he was inches away three more times.

He also forced a good save from Michel Kuipers.

Brighton boss Mickey Adams said: “A clean sheet at half-time wouldn’t have saved us the way we played.

“We were beaten by a better side.”

Brighton threatened in the first half through Joe Anyinsah and lone frontman Glenn Murray claimed a last-second consolation.

Leeds responded perfectly after two defeats and McAllister added: “Some of our play was fantastic.”

CHELTENHAM 4, COLCHESTER 3

BARRY HAYLES fired an injury-time winner to seal a dramatic comeback by Cheltenham.

The Robins looked dead and buried when they trailed 3-1 to a Colchester side being watched from the stands by new boss Paul Lambert.

nthony Wordsworth put the U’s ahead on 20 minutes but Darren Kenton levelled 16 minutes later.

Wordsworth struck again two minutes before the break and a third six minutes into the second half by Johnnie Jackson seemed to have sealed it for the visitors.

But Lloyd Owusu hit back on 53 minutes, Stuart Fleetwood converted a penalty four minutes later after Matt Heath handled and then Hayles struck four minutes into stoppage time.

SCUNTHORPE 3, CREWE 0

SKIPPER Izzy Iriekpen’s late strike made Scunthorpe table-toppers.

His header from Martyn Woolford’s cross 10 minutes from time took the Iron level on goal difference with Leicester but above them on goals scored.

Despite the home side’s dominance, it was not until the 35 minute mark that Woolford broke the deadlock from close range.

With Crewe chasing an equaliser after the break, gaps began to appear in their defence and Gary Hooper and Woolford hit the woodwork as Scunthorpe broke quickly.

The second goal eventually arrived in the 67th minute, Paul Hayes sidefooting past Crewe keeper Steve Collis.

Then Iriekpen’s late header sealed top spot and condemned Crewe to a sixth winless match.

SOUTHEND 1, STOCKPORT 1

LEON McSWEENEY’S arrival had a dramatic effect in this tense affair.

The striker had been on the pitch for just 60 seconds when he unleashed a tremendous 25- yard drive into the top corner to draw the Hatters level.

Then, two minutes later, he went down under a challenge from Dan Harding, which saw the home full-back sent off.

Before McSweeney arrived in the 63rd minute to turn the game around, the Shrimpers seemed poised to record their fifth league victory in a row.

They had taken the lead on 19 minutes through Lee Barnard.

He seized upon a flicked header from Alex Revell to beat keeper Fraser Forster with a fine strike from the edge of the box.

MK DONS 3, CARLISLE 1

PETER LEVEN’S double and a first Dons goal for Spanish defender Miguel Llera piled on the agony for Carlisle.

John Ward’s creaking side have now crashed to six successive defeats.

And boss Ward admitted: “It’s like an old record — I am saying the same things after every match.

“We’ve not been strong or clinical enough at both ends of the pitch.”

The Cumbrians had taken a fourth-minute lead through Danny Graham.

But on 38 minutes Leven hammered in a 20-yard shot and created a second with a 63rd-minute cross that Llera headed in. Midfielder Leven then hit a 90th-minute penalty after Danny Livesey brought down substitute Jude Stirling.

Dons manager Roberto Di Matteo said: “It doesn’t get any better than that because we had to fight back. The team showed their strength.”

BRISTOL ROVERS 2, ORIENT 1

DANNY COLES scored at both ends and then limped off in a game to remember for the Rovers defender.

He deflected a cross from Jason Demetriou past his own keeper Steve Phillips straight after half-time to give Orient the lead.

Sixteen minutes into the second half, Coles made amends when he headed home Stuart Campbell’s corner for the equaliser.

But a few minutes later he was forced out of the game by a knee injury.

Rovers’ winner came 20 minutes from time when Rickie Lambert’s effort was blocked and Craig Hinton rammed in the rebound from eight yards.

Orient piled on the pressure and Ryan Jarvis hit the bar with a free-kick.

Rovers’ manager Paul Trollope was sent to the stand in injury time for encroaching on the pitch.

WALSALL 1, PETERBOROUGH 2

SHAUN BATT headed home after just a minute to put Posh on the road to victory.

It was the striker’s first goal for Peterborough since his £5,000 summer move from non-league Fisher Athletic.

As Walsall hit back, central defender Anthony Gerrard headed against the bar from Chris Palmer’s corner.

But, two minutes from the break, Chris Whelpdale doubled the visitors’ advantage with a superbly struck 20-yard effort.

It was almost three midway through the second half when George Boyd’s shot hit a post.

And Walsall, whose consolation goal from Troy Deeney’s header came in the fifth minute of stoppage time, found themselves shunted out of the top six.

TRANMERE 1, MILLWALL 3

TRESOR KANDOL tormented Rovers as a bemused Ronnie Moore apologised for his side’s performance.

Two early Millwall goals rocked Rovers as they slumped to a third straight home defeat.

Tranmere manager Moore said: “I want to apologise for the terrible, awful performance.”

Kandol headed home after eight minutes and produced a superb finish into the corner just five minutes later.

He then turned provider to set up Jimmy Abdou on the hour.

Bas Savage’s last-minute header was of little consolation.

Moore moaned: “There were so many players off the pace.

“It’s really difficult to explain why. I cannot offer excuses. It just didn’t happen for us.”

SWINDON 1, HUDDERSFIELD 3

MAURICE MALPAS was jeered by the home fans as his hapless side plunged to their fifth consecutive defeat at the County Ground.

Boos and chants of ‘we want Malpas out’ erupted as Michael Flynn’s 25-yard piledriver wrapped up victory for the lively Terriers.

Striker Liam Dickinson pounced in the sixth minute, acrobatically finishing Andy Butler’s nod down.

In the 25th minute, Michael Timlin was brought down by Jim Goodwin but keeper Matt Glennon broke Swindon’s heart with a fine penalty save from Simon Cox.

Glennon promptly launched a long clearance and Gary Roberts lashed the ball home.

Flynn put Huddersfield three up before Robins midfielder Craig Easton grabbed a consolation a minute from time.
