And there were angry exchanges between Jonas Olsson and a group of Albion fans at the final whistle.
But when questioned about the incident boss Roberto Di Matteo did an Arsene Wenger and went into denial mode.
He said: "I didn't see that. It's difficult to imagine that happening because Jonas is a very good player and a very good man."
Albion slipped from first to third and have now recorded just one win in seven games since basking in the glory of a 5-0 demolition job at Middlesbrough.
Coventry have their own problems with injuries and Chris Coleman's side weren't pretty, but they were brave and inspired.
City defender Marcus Hall couldn't be at the game due to the death of his father.
And the City defence, which have been leaky to say the least, tightened things up.
Coleman said: "It wasn't pretty but we did a great job. We had to play a certain type of game and nick something.
"West Brom were always going to be difficult but when you're missing the players we're missing it gets even harder."
However, City had an anxious moment just before the break when Jerome Thomas fell to a challenge from Joe Mattock in the penalty box minutes before the break.
But just as Coleman was about to let rip at the fourth official for a contentious penalty decision, referee Keith Stroud pointed straight at Thomas instead and booked him for diving.
Di Matteo raged: "It was a definite penalty. I've seen the replays. He touched him. It's just that Thomas went down a bit late because he tried to stay on his feet."
The Baggies' best chance came just minutes from the end when Chris Wood raced clear of the City defence but couldn't beat substitute keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos.
