City boss Johnson said: "This is a difficult place to come to, so to leave away with three points and three goals is an excellent outcome.
"The lads played some good football today - in fact, they all worked their socks off."
City are now fifth and Johnson added: "I think we are where we deserve to be in the table - this was a fantastic result, it's a big three points for us." The Tykes started strongly and Iceland international Emil Hallfredsson stuck the bar.
But it was City who roared into a two-goal lead by the interval.
Nicky Maynard tucked home neatly on 26 minutes, then Evander Sno side-footed in three minutes before half-time.
Substitute Daniel Bogdanovic brought Barnsley back into the game 17 minutes into the second half when his shot squirmed through the legs of keeper Dean Gerken, but the game was effectively over with 15 minutes left.
Ryan Shotton was sent off for hauling back Danny Haynes in the penalty area and although Luke Steele saved Jamie McAllister's spot-kick, Marvin Elliott followed up to score.
Adam Hammill's stoppage-time curler was little consolation for Barnsley, who face Manchester United in the Carling Cup on Tuesday and have lost their last two games after a mini revival.
Manager Mark Robins said: "Today's performance just wasn't acceptable. You will see a different side on Tuesday."
