Bruce has had the pair watched and the diminutive Buonanotte, just 5ft 2in, starred for Argentina's Under-21 side at the Toulon tournament in June.
The River Plate star is ready to move to Europe but the unfashionable Black Cats will face a fight to land the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who has also caught the eye of Inter Milan and Juventus.
Sunderland still want a left winger and Calderon, who plays for Deportivo Toluca, has impressed too.
Bruce is also following up his £3million bid for Coventry keeper Keiren Westwood.
Bruce has sent scouts to check on Westwood and is ready with a January bid for the shot-stopper, which would put Craig Gordon's place under threat.
The Irish international has been in superb form since signing from Carlisle for £250,000 in 2008 and has attracted regular Premier League attention.
But Bruce is ready to firm up his interest in a move which spells the end of Gordon's stint with the Black Cats.
Ex-Sunderland boss Roy Keane laid out £9m to land Gordon from Hearts but the keeper has been hit by injuries, the latest of which will keep him sidelined until next year, and has yet to live up to the fee.
