ADAM JOHNSON has been told he cannot leave Middlesbrough in January.

The £7million-rated left-winger is being eyed by Sunderland, Spurs, Chelsea and Everton.

Johnson's current deal runs out in the summer and he has rejected a contract extension.

The 22-year-old has bagged eight goals in the Championship so far this season.

Middlesbrough chiefs want Johnson to head their faltering promotion push and have told him he will have to see out his deal as new boss Gordon Strachan bids to halt the club's slide.

Boro were fourth and just one point off the lead when Strachan replaced the axed Gareth Southgate last month.

The former Celtic chief is planning his own January clear-out and will look to raise funds by flogging Didier Digard, Julio Arca and Jeremie Aliadiere.

The new Middlesbrough manager, who has brought in double training sessions in a bid to toughen up his players, wants to improve the quality in his squad.

Yes, possibly, but if we go up, we'll recoup the 7 mil or he could even stay. Lets get back up firt then worry...if he goes in Jan and we miss out due to his lack of goals and workrate, we're knackered anyway!
