Hammers chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson is reported to have had his assets frozen in both Britain and Iceland after becoming a dramatic victim of the global credit crunch.
Now the one-time billionaire is battling to survive after the fall of Icelandic bank Landsbanki, where he was both the chairman and the majority shareholder.
And it is feared his 95 per cent stake in the East London club is among the assets frozen.
A senior West Ham source confessed: "The situation is just unbelievable. No one knows what's going on.
"There are strong reports that the chairman's assets have been seized in a bid to cover the debts of Landsbanki but we've had no confirmation of that. And who has seized them? The Icelandic government or Gordon Brown?"
The club is said to have a rich investor keen to take over. But the source added: "It all could mean that West Ham is now in the control of the Government - it's mind-boggling.
"It's not helping with the sale of the club. How can you buy when you don't know who is doing the selling?"
