HARRY REDKNAPP is ready to lead Team GB to football gold in the 2012 Olympics.
Great Britain’s phenonemal success in Beijing has really rubbed off on the Portsmouth boss and he would love to pick and manage a side from the home nations for the London Games.
Sir Alex Ferguson, whose Manchester United side visit Portsmouth tomorrow, is Redknapp’s personal choice for the job. But Fergie will be 70 by then and says he is unlikely to want the commitment.
Redknapp himself will be 65, but age is no barrier to him.
It would be a dream come true for him to take on the rest of the world in his home patch of East London.
Redknapp said: “Of course I’d love to do it. Sir Alex Ferguson is an obvious choice but if he’s not interested then anyone else would be a fool not to take the opportunity.”
FA chairman Lord Triesman is “completely committed” to fielding a GB soccer team in 2012.
The football governing bodies of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are against the idea of a unified British team. But FIFA chief Sepp Blater has said he would have no problem with GB fielding 11 England players.
Redknapp’s response to Portsmouth’s 4-0 tanking at Chelsea was to sign Armand Traore from Arsenal on a season-long loan and he could face United.
The Pompey boss said: “I need a couple of quick players and Traore can certainly run. I won’t hesitate to throw him in.”
