UNITED TO MAKE ROONEY LEAGUE'S BEST-PAID PLAYER

£170k-a-week Rooney offer to fend off Barcelona

ROONEY: United are keen to do a huge deal

WAYNE ROONEY will become the highest-paid player in Premier League history and the face of Manchester United for the next decade.

United chiefs will offer him an astonishing £170,000-a-week contract when negotiations open next February.

And that will include a £45,000-a-week image rights deal to become Old Trafford's poster boy.

United have become increasingly aware of temptations from Spain for Rooney with Barcelona having put him top of their wanted list for the summer.

Rooney knows of Barca's interest and is intrigued by the prospect of lining up alongside the likes of Lionel Messi but still retains a huge loyalty to United.

The Old Trafford hierarchy plan to reward that loyalty with the most lucrative contract in the club's history.

Considerable work has already been done on the deal behind the scenes but no talks can take place until January when the ban on Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford is lifted.

The deal will include a a major image rights element which overshadows United's previous highest agreement with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo had an image rights agreement with the club, but that was affected when he launched his CR7 range.

Rooney, who is already contracted to United's shirt sponsor Nike, will be far easier to tie up.

There is an eagerness at United to seal an agreement before the World Cup where Rooney seems certain to emerge as one of the stars of the tournament - prompting an even greater demand from the biggest clubs around the world.

w.rooney is now red and will always stay red for he wants to be the next r.giggs

By zheel shwani.. Posted January 24 2010 at 1:32 PM.

How is rooney cack/average?? do you think man u could get to champions league final 2 years on the trot without a great strike force?? yeah ronaldo's gone now but rooney provided great passes to aid him..fergie buys rubish?? erm...he bought ronaldo!! for 12mil. He is a different player from euro 2004, but not in a bad way...instead of takin shots for himself he gives it to teammates in a better position, unlike in his youth. I think 170grand a week is madness for any job...but in footballing terms, he deserves to be highest paid whatever the goin rate is.

By sir alan.. Posted November 28 2009 at 1:32 PM.

rooney he most be on barcelona making couple with leo messi..

By james .. Posted November 26 2009 at 11:19 PM.

rooney deserve the money but manutd needs to do a lot of work if they want to reach the standard of barca, milan, madrid etc. am a big man u fan but the way we play is so gone in the days style of football. we need some clear up i.e the likes of gary neville shud be let go.
am so furious with our manager, with his spending-nani, owen, valencia with the exception of a promising future ronaldo.
i still remain a big man u royal and congrat rooney

By jose chan.. Posted November 26 2009 at 9:29 AM.

Wayne Rooney is a fantastic footballer. All those saying he is being paid too much just wish they were him. If he has the talent why should he not get paid for it. How many musicians make more money than him "just to sing"? Don hate, appreciate.

By Melvoe.. Posted November 25 2009 at 2:49 PM.

frankly speaking, Rooney is a great player; so he should be given his flower while he is alive.

By joe logan.. Posted November 24 2009 at 11:29 AM.

In all fairness Rooney is a good team player but is not a lethal striker as Ferguson thinks he can become. What Man U is lacking at present is a top quality clinical finisher in the class of the likes David Villa, Luis Fabiano, Edin Dzeko, Torres, Eto'o, Nilmar, Aguero, etc. United also needs a creative midfielder in persons like Diego, Luka Modric, Ozul, David Silva, Iniesta, Fabregas, etc. So to pay Rooney that amount of money is good becuz he is English, but he won't get the goals lacking at United at the moment. I strongly believe Fergie must gave more playing time to youngster Macheda, Josh King and Welbeck instead of the lazy and languid Berbatov. In Berbatov's absence United play her usual fast game and scored goals. If Berbatov plays against Portsmouth this weekend, we will see how slow the attack will be once again. Rooney is not playing at his best becuz Berbatov is too slow for his quick movements. And Fergie must not sell Vidic because he's the future of United defense. J. Evans lacks the pace and too soft, O'Shea is similar to Evans. Simon Kjaer must be brought in to replace Ferdinand in the not long distance future. Fabio, Rafael, Anderson, Macheda, Welbeck, Josh King, Da Laet, Amos, Tosic, Ljlajic, Tom Cleverly, Nani, Valencia, Eikrem, etc are future of the team.

Overated...runs around the field like a headless chicken, strikers score goals and i'm yet to see rooney do enough to warrant him as the "best striker" in the world...typical of the British Media to push one of their own as the best in the world

truth be told, Dafoe is way better than Rooney, atleast he scores

By Barca.. Posted November 23 2009 at 6:23 AM.

Rooney deserve 170 thousand a week. Rooney is a great player and he love united so much. Pls stop compeling rooney with vanpersi, benzima, henry, silver, etoo, essien, tevez, adebayor ETC ROONEY past them by far.

By Obineme sunday.. Posted November 23 2009 at 6:25 AM.

Though, i'm a Chelsea guy, i like Rooney a lot just bcos of his aggression in front of goal typical of great strikers, d kind any manager would want 2 have in his team. Bravo!( though he's naughty). He always make Chelsea Vs Man U interesting

By FemladCHELSEA.. Posted November 23 2009 at 1:07 AM.

Worth it. well done Rooney

By mohamed.. Posted November 23 2009 at 1:05 AM.

all rooney does is abuse everyone else and blames the midfield for not giving him the ball.

By davids.. Posted November 22 2009 at 11:12 PM.

Pls rooney if you are reading this mail, pls employ me to manage your finances. LOL

By Ayo Kent.. Posted November 22 2009 at 8:33 PM.

...Whatever the case or situation or whatever you guys are using to measure performance or effectiveness...it is obvious that the same tools are not used by club owners and world class coaches...There might be alot of hype around Rooney, whether it be main stream media or corridors...the people with the money feels Rooney is the man of the moment and have got to secure his services...We on the otherhand are just whiteline judges which opinions do not count or does not even have an effect on the outcome of their decisions...I believe he is an allround footballer who has proved himself to the world...allow him his place in the sun...

By Harry.. Posted November 22 2009 at 8:12 PM.

Hey,rooney is one of d best players in d world but i think is not worth dt much'170'let him improve is scorin first & he i'll be worth dt amount.man u fan

170,000 a week just for playing football on weekends? human is the only animal that laughs and has state legislature - very true.

By wafi from kabul AFG.. Posted November 22 2009 at 5:25 PM.

Let's analyse Rooney for a second... excellent at the world cup four/five years ago then made his champions league debut with man u. The one word I'd use to describe him at that time was "explosive", however like most teenage football prodigies he's lost his edge and now a lot of hype surrounds him. I feel he's improved his all round game i.e his first touch in holding a ball after a 50 yard pass is amazing but feel five years ago he'd run with the ball shoot and score now though he's lost this explosive edge. If he's to get back this type of selfness’ and be more determined to be the star in games then yes he'll become the best player in the world and therefore in my opinion will win the world cup for england. However I've yet to see a player that's had an explosive edge, loose it and get it back.. will Rooney.. who knows....

By tic.. Posted November 22 2009 at 5:21 PM.

It's all down to market forces.

But what would George Best have been worth in today's market - off the scale. Now there was a poster boy and a genius footballer.

By PetetheRed.. Posted November 22 2009 at 4:50 PM.

Do i think he's world class? Definitely, do i think he's in the league of ' the special ones' ... No... Effective but not dependable infront of goal. A big match: player not winner... Do i think he's worth £170 a week.. No! Do i think he shud earn d highest in d league.. Well yes along with torres...
Bottom line: if they can, they shud... If i could, i wouldn't...kapish!

By Cece (9ija).. Posted November 22 2009 at 4:43 PM.

barcelona do not want him. has any barca official been quoted. barca want robinho who is a much btter player. id pay 85 mil for shrek. the rights to the film maybe but not rooney. what a waste of space.

By lyon fan.. Posted November 22 2009 at 4:23 PM.

rooney is a crapbag. no skill whatsoever, cannot take on, average speed, no strength just heavy, no technique, no 20 goals a season and as for hard work why dont you play him at full back and we will see how determined he is. he cant hold the ball up and goes missing in big games.
typical overrated donkey englishman.
he is ugly as sin so why make him a poster boy, at least beckha,m and ronaldo offer something in that department.
players better than rooney:
messi, ronaldo, kaka, arshavin, etoo, ibrahimovic, villa, torres, pato, diego, dzeko, fabregas, iniesta, xavi, sneijder, higuain, tevez, drogba, essien, lampard, gerrard, xabi alonso, benzema, lisandro, henry, silva, cassano, balotelli, fabiano, and pazzini. not even top 30.

By lyon fan.. Posted November 22 2009 at 4:21 PM.

rooney is a good team player and is the force in man utd after cr7 left old trafford. roo we love you.

By oscar munywoki.. Posted November 22 2009 at 4:06 PM.

ROONEY IS OVERATED. HE IS NOWHERE NEAR THE LEVEL OF KAKA, MESSI, RONALDO, DROGBA, BENZEMA, ETOO OR EVEN VAN PERSIE. ALL ROONEY DOES IS RUN AROUND AND CHASING THE REFEREE EVEN RYAN GIGGS IS BETTER THAN ROONEY AT HIS AGE

"and Utd fans called City for paying the wages players want, difference is City can afford it

By alexsam. Posted November 22 2009 at 2:24 PM."

Ah the delusions of the City Fan! City Can't afford to buy their players a Kit-Kat! their Owners can. City have no money other than what they get in hand outs from teh Middle East.

You can't just "Give" a compamy money it has to be Lent! Manchester City have the biggest debt of any club on the planet!!

At leaset United EARN every penny they have.

By Peter Maher.. Posted November 22 2009 at 3:06 PM.

With Gordon Brown talking of a depression, and foul mouthed yobs like Rooney being paid 170000 pounds a week, and some people saying it is justified, it is obvious that the country is in a chaotic state.

By John.. Posted November 22 2009 at 2:48 PM.

All that money for a footballer and if that they worth sooo much and sooo good then why can't they win the world cup for England. The sad thing is that hard working people would sacrifce everything so that they can see a bunch of overpaid guys kick a ball for 90 mins. Look at most hard up football fans, most live in council houses.

By Mine.. Posted November 22 2009 at 2:42 PM.

170 000 for what? rooney and dogba are the same but with age gap difference
120 000 per week is enough.

By charles.. Posted November 22 2009 at 2:16 PM.

Rooney poster boy? I am a man united fan and most non English man utd fans know that Mr Rooney is over rated.

By Pankhu.. Posted November 22 2009 at 1:21 PM.

I think the amount is not too high for the only wazza in the world he is a fanstastic and complete striker with pace, skills and many more.longlife theare of dream longlife wazza

By Kayode dare e.. Posted November 22 2009 at 12:28 PM.

im united through & through but rooney is vastly overrated & tbh i dont think hes any better than aguero although with rooney you the maximum with effort & tracking back but for me he just doesnt score or create enough!

he was awful yesterday & i thought it was funny when he got taken off & then looked in amazment as to why he was being taken off! he should get taken off more if hes not doing enough with the ball as its the only way to fire him up & to play the full 90mins you need to earn it not just be given it due to your name

By kevin.. Posted November 22 2009 at 1:07 PM.

rooney is by far the best striker in the world...... in not saying he will get 30+ goals every season but what he offers you no other striker can..... he is fearless, strong, great knowledge of the great, out and out target man and most of all he is so influential on and off the pitch..... if united wanna offer him so much money then so be it..... if i were top dog id do anything to keep him in the premier-ship...... i mean look how tempting spain could be for him...... but i say keep him at all cost's......

By scott .. Posted November 22 2009 at 1:08 PM.

Man, this is disgusting...

£170,000 to play football, absolutely DISGUSTING!!!!

By ninna.. Posted November 22 2009 at 12:13 PM.

rooney is good but the money is too much. am a united fan but ferguson shld ave a rethink on the deal. if he wants to stay no problem.he is good no doubt.

By dapson.. Posted November 22 2009 at 12:16 PM.

Wayne is a great and influencial player who brings change to the game each time he is playing with both man utd and england.

By musunga .o.. Posted November 22 2009 at 12:06 PM.

I think Wayne Rooney, is worth the £170k-a-week deal as I see him as the current Worlds Best Striker, as Defo mentioned "That Player (Rooney) has the lunges of 3 men", their is no other Striker in the World at the moment that can be compared with Wayne Rooney, He has got it all: Speed, Skill, Strength, Determination & a Footballing Brain. Man Utd would not be the same without him, even if they buy the likes of David Villa etc

By Jonathan Davies.. Posted November 22 2009 at 11:38 AM.

who'd u lot rather have the money that is there? the players who work there socks off during traing and games, or the big wigs who push paper about, the cash is there, in my eyes i'd rather the players get it.

By m wilson (UTD fan).. Posted November 22 2009 at 11:20 AM.

He really diserve it. I salute u rooney. M UTD 4 life

By Eino "lovers" Petrus.. Posted November 22 2009 at 10:57 AM.

Ofcourse yes he deserve to be highest paid in english football coz he is not only a best striker in the world but also best mid field and defender too. I LOVE TO WATCH HIM PLAY ALL DAY LONG!!! WAYNE YOU ARE THE SUPER STRIKER. Barca good offer but no thanks. WAYNE FOR UNITED EVER.

By Mrs Shabana Tabbassum.. Posted November 22 2009 at 10:58 AM.

Rooney has a good all round game, but fails to score enough goals. Shearer was much better. If he can get 170grand a week then good luck to him.

By Bilbo.. Posted November 22 2009 at 10:17 AM.

This is another wage scandal in today's football
Rooney is already overrated and overpaid and it is the poor supporter who has to pay more to make for the deficit the club has.
This shows that Furguson is not paying from his own pocket.
Does Furguson know that there is a recession
and many working class people does not even have a job?
Does Furguson know

By A.Messina.. Posted November 22 2009 at 10:06 AM.

Rooney is a very overrated player. When the chips are down, how often do you see him change the game for United? His shooting is terrible, his passes are usually astray. As for energy and enthusiasm, how far can that get you? Total waste of money!

By LK Eu.. Posted November 22 2009 at 8:59 AM.

Wayne is a great player, and Utd would be mad to let him go!!!

By Sharon.. Posted November 22 2009 at 8:47 AM.

Again, stupid money for any footballer to be on, but Rooney is a special player, and if there gonna be paid these sorts of wages then Roo is one of a few worth it, although i believe, if rooney was to drop back and play a more scholesy type role he'd be much more efffective, he is good on the ball and has great vision, without the pessure and expectation of goals could easily be top assister with two strikers in front of him. envy is an ugly thing too, Rooney fat??? you avin a laff!

By m wilson (UTD fan).. Posted November 22 2009 at 8:33 AM.

Great reward 4 a great player.Man utd is very lucky 2 hv wayne.Such raw talent cn only b fully nutured by Sir Alex,nd Wayne has yet 2 reach his full potential

By Sean Benjamin.. Posted November 22 2009 at 8:13 AM.

Rooney would always be the highest paid because he is english.Ronaldo knew that, and that is why he left there was no publicty deals for Ronaldo even though he is miles better than Rooney.Ronaldo was being exploited by united.
Rooney is an ordinary player that even a mediocre striker in la liga scores more goals than him.
But at the eyes of english fans he is the white pele.
diet coke ads anyone? but he is FAT!

By carlosssantos.. Posted November 22 2009 at 7:07 AM.

Hey! No ego. It's a pride to have wayne in utd,how would u imagine him in any other team? Get D.SILVA to partner him and yu see him become the next world best.

FERGIE IS A CLOWN AND HE HAS THE BIG RED NOSE 4 IT HE BUYS RUBBISH CARRICK BERB NANI ANDERSON VALENCIA OWEN AND NOW MASSIVE MONEY 2 SHREKI THINK ITS FERGIE WHO SHOULD GET THE ROAD AND SOON WOULD BE A NICE XMAS PRESENT 4 THE UNITED FANS

By patsy.. Posted November 22 2009 at 4:54 AM.

Rooney as a poster boy, must be some kind of a joke

By NZ.. Posted November 22 2009 at 2:53 AM.

His a good player, but am not sure his worth that amount, but if he can pull off the deal good for him. If my boss offered me more than my job is worth I would not say no !!

By Jones Imbanga.. Posted November 22 2009 at 2:06 AM.

you must be dreaming, SHREK as the face of MAn U, and one of the stars of the world cup, Yeah right, and where would you put the real stars, the Messi's, Torres, Ronaldos, Rooney should try and win the world player of the year award first and please stop getting carried away as usual, I dint see him do anything as Brazil.

By Adebayo Ogungbesan.. Posted November 22 2009 at 12:46 AM.

does that include rights to the musical?

maybe they could get him to do some panto too?

By giles clarke.. Posted November 22 2009 at 12:46 AM.

its no wonder man utd are nearly a billion pounds in debt now with massive intrest payments they paid nearly 50 million pounds in intrest this year and will continue to do so for years to come the club is totally mis-managed its no wonder f.c united started up on there own success at any cost is not what football is about with the economy in serious trouble and no sign of picking up you do wonder what will come of the the great club man utd the same with liverpool and chelsea to a lesser extent if roman bails out the only exceptions are man city who are debt free and arsenal who are managed fantastically under wenger and even built a new stadium which in 10-15 years will be fully paid for i do find it incredible that man utd would pay a player 170 thousand a week when he would be happy with 100 grand a week especially as he is not a goal scorer even the great cristiano ronaldo was not on anything near that it will be intresting to see the state of utd in 15 years time

By tony,kent.. Posted November 22 2009 at 12:33 AM.

Why not? Rooney is a huge talent & is the future of Man U so why not reward him. But he must learn to kern that temper as he will no doubt be United's Captain in a year or two. A great talent & he obviously loves United. Good luck to him. Wish he was an Aussie!
