SHOULD THE PARIS MATCH BE REPLAYED?

HANDBALL: TF1 video clearly shows the offence
HANDBALL: TF1 video clearly shows the offence

THE sense of outrage has still not died down as France celebrate a place in the World Cup finals that they barely deserve.

Raymond Domenech's side were jeered as they struggled to cope with a Republic of Ireland side playing as though their lives depended on the outcome of the play-off second leg in Paris.

Thoroughly deserving Robbie Keane's opener, the visitors missed chances to snatch an all-important second away goal and the tie went to extra time.

After surviving a penalty scare when Nicolas Anelka tumbled over Shay Given, there was huge controversy when Thierry Henry handled the ball TWICE before laying on William Gallas's equaliser, which sent Les Bleus through 2-1 on aggregate.

The Barcelona forward looked offside too and Shay Given led the protests - furiously remonstrating with the referee to at least consult his assistant.

Ireland had been cheated at a critical time and there was no coming back for Giovanni Trapattoni's impressive troops.

Kevin Kilbane has called for FIFA to replay the game while Robbie Keane hit out at Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter, saying it was the result the authorities wanted.

And what about Henry? The striker has a lofty reputation on these shores after his excellent work at Arsenal but is his character stained forever?

Please let us know. We want you to get in touch using the feedback form below to express your views on the game.

Should there be a replay? Would that set too dangerous a precedent? Is now the time to bring in technology to decide tight decisions? Has the whole play-off seeding system been unfair? Will Henry be tainted by this?

I think the game should be replayed with what was left on the clock the time the incident occured with the dubious equalizer, that should not have stood, then onto penalties, as what might have been the case if Henry hadn't handled!!

But then you have Platini (French of course) who will never accept any sort of replay.

.....its a shame BUT let us put its backway....the irish won 2-1 on agg. after a goal score by handball of the irish player in the very last minute of the extra-time played....should that be a REPLAYED after the french protest that or should FIFA boss allow to a rematch......
i think YES...

By paris merlin.. Posted November 22 2009 at 3:13 AM.

if we replay this game then we should replay every other game and look at the tv replay starting with the 1966 final after we won the world cup by a goal where the ball never crossed the line we should be the first to show some honesty and integrity and offer the german football federation a replay with the players we have playing now for us and say sorry for cheating i wonder how many hypocrites will be in favour of that who are takeing the moral high ground over the henry hand ball!

By tony,kent.. Posted November 22 2009 at 2:32 AM.

somebody took the time to search for a precedent where a replay was awarded in a world cup match. They were succesful and found that in 2005 a match between Ubecistan and Bhrain was ordered by FIFA to be replayed ''due to a technical error by the referee''. The nature of the error was not stated. Surely if the precedent exists then this is the case for a replay. In law it would be. If not then at least FIFA should have the decency to tell the public what the ''technical error by the referee was; and not be hiding the facts.

By jim.. Posted November 22 2009 at 1:06 AM.

fair play what a joke.we have all been let down by fifa and uafa.somebody help please

By matt.. Posted November 22 2009 at 12:46 AM.

Didn't Ireland cheat to get a penalty against Georgia to win 2-1?
And Didn't Rooney dive in one of the group matches?
So just how many teams would make the world cup finals?

By Bart Nelson.. Posted November 21 2009 at 11:46 PM.

The Spirit of South Africa is broken for ever. I pity the South Africans as much if not more than the Irish because the tournament they so painstakingly invested in has been ridiculed and totally diluted... I was looking forward to fly down-under ... but after this, I will cancel my trip, stay at home infront of the box... and watch Eastenders...

By Alfred.. Posted November 21 2009 at 11:15 PM.

ireland wont get a replay so we may as well forget it plus what henry did after gallas scored was wrong especially knowing what he did so i did like him as a player but not no more but life goes on plus as old saying goes what goes around comes around cause every country thats in the world cup will want too beat the french now

By eddie.. Posted November 21 2009 at 10:04 PM.

world cup is no longer intersting if cheater wins the game its waste of money and waste of time only and imprtant is michel platini is french so how come they will reply so straight away they don't want reply lets ignore and hate world cup and don't watch world cup live and it shouldn't be broadcrast world cup in ireland

By dk.. Posted November 20 2009 at 9:14 PM.

If FIFA want to rid the game of cheating they should make the bold move of kicking France out of the World Cup. I guarantee that any player in future who does something like Henry did would run to the ref straight away and admit what he did.

By Chris Doyle... Posted November 20 2009 at 5:39 PM.

it was unfair to let the goal be.as far as henry's handball that led to the goal is concerned the game should be replayed.it is now that the world will know whether FIFA are partial or impartial!!!!

By Andrew.. Posted November 20 2009 at 6:24 AM.

It should be replayed. We just cnt ignore this. If no action taken at all, i think Sep Blatter should step down.... shame to football....

By Ramanadi.. Posted November 20 2009 at 6:16 AM.

Dear FIFA,
I write to congratulate you as a federation for signaling the death of football with your treatment of the Irish team and every honest football fan the world over.
I read On your website that the FIFA "fair play" program was started after the "hand of god" incident involving Diego maradonna against England ...at the 86 world cup.
The article also said the program was started largly due to sir bobby robsons perseverance.
I can only hope the late great bobby robson was unable to see that disgusting incident up in heaven, because if he did he would of clearly seen that what he had fought to achieve 23yrs ago was an absolute waste of time.
You have shown every child in the world that if you cheat you will win!
Please do not bother to display your bright flags of fair play at the world cup because they stand for nothing in your eyes or mine now and after last night the children of the world carrying them see fair play exactly like you do, of no importance.
You are a dated organisation that needs to change, however, I can see nothing has changed in 23 years, so chances are I could be writing a letter just like this one 23 years from now and FIFA will ignore it because the way football is run at the moment it can be controlled and manipulated.
You are a disgrace, the football world is ashamed, and I for one pray for the day when in years to come people can look back at this incident and the way FIFA handled it and think" thank god we changed".

By patrick houlihan.. Posted November 20 2009 at 3:53 AM.

It is very sad to see such spirited performance by Ireland go to waste with such a ridiculous piece of action from one of the best players in the world.

Henry should be ashamed!! Replay would be a fair notion but I really do not think it will happen to be honest as Fifa will be happy the big team has gone through in France.

By Rav.. Posted November 20 2009 at 2:46 AM.

Always admired Henry as a player but its a sad day for the french national team when playing against little ol Ireland they had to use a hand to score a goal.I hope it comes back to haunt henry and France

By brian.. Posted November 19 2009 at 11:20 PM.

i dont see how the video will slow donw the game that much... for god sake its important for all hard decision like this... referee's are only human too and cannot always have the best view point, aftersight and time to study an action reply. they have to make the decision there and then! im irish and feel hard done by but that is football!

we had enough golden oppertunities during the game to kill it off... john o shea missed two sitters, one in each game... kevin doyle missed a good heading oppertunity in the first half of the second game...robbie keane had a one on one with the keeper.... they should of buried france long before this was even an issue. same old story with ireland... no killer instinct and they crap themselves in front of goal !

use it as an experience and move on... keep this in mind for the euro's and qualify and do somthing in them!

thank you trap for bringing our old fighting spirit back... put em under pressure !!!!

By celticboxingfan.. Posted November 19 2009 at 8:58 PM.

The game cannot be replayed...what if something similar happened again, like a penalty that should not have been? How many replays would it need for everyone to be satisfied that every decision was correct? As galling as it is for the Irish, and I was cheering them on last night, it is now up to FIFA to make a commitment for the good of the game to bring in at least an extra official behind each goal, or at best video replays. Not one game I have ever seen has been without controversy, and none of them have been replayed...we'd still be in the 1950 season if that was the case!

By peter salter.. Posted November 19 2009 at 6:03 PM.

THe suggestions to replay the game are utter nonsense, Is this the first time something like this has happened in football? We see all despicable refreeing desicions made in all major football leagues, and players have got over them... why would this be differennt? is it because the Irish, english can make so much noise? Thierry Henry will always be a great footballer period!! I wish calls for bans would be made for footballers who break legs of other fellow footballers instead.....
I wouldn't have expected a different reaction had it been a NI player instead of Henry. SO please we are tired of sickening cries!!!

By Gregg .. Posted November 19 2009 at 5:28 PM.

Henry I am disappointed a player of your calibre doing this....disgrace for FIFA stop using officials who can't see its disgraceful better get a 4th and 5th official behind each goal post or you bring the game into disrepute did you hear that Sepp and Platini

By jimi.. Posted November 19 2009 at 5:21 PM.

this match shouldn't be replayed ... france should be kicked out of the cup nd ireland should replace them

By john valentine.. Posted November 19 2009 at 4:03 PM.

i have petition in brasilia to not watch cup world. 5,000,000 person sign because of goal last night. brasil will pull out of world cup if there is no replay. other countries should do the same!! viva irlande!!

By eduardo.. Posted November 19 2009 at 5:08 PM.

all the comments here are valid, but as a proud irishman i'd have to say we feel hard done by, not just on lastnights robbery but with the seeding of teams changed at the last minute to favour the 'better' teams that did not qualify because they were not good enough in the qualifying rounds. but i feel that fifa cannot let last nights game stand as a result, there has to be a replay and if france won that game well that would be fair. but to be honest we should have finished the game in the 90 minutes, but that is not the topic here!! if i were henry i would be feeling sick at this moment in time because he will never live it down, he had his chance to own up but he did not because he knew they wern't going to score any other way.... shame on you henry!!

By pat yeates.. Posted November 19 2009 at 5:06 PM.

the match cannot be replayed unfortunately but france could be penalised by4-5 pts in group stage at the world cup

By tef.. Posted November 19 2009 at 12:43 PM.

i have completely lost interest in soccer today, becos of the way refrees handle matches, it is high time fifa shows REDCARDS to such refrees or soccer dies out for big names

By kod.. Posted November 19 2009 at 12:25 PM.

This is absolut nonsense to call for a replay. If you do it once, you could do it for every matches. Football will go nowhere.
Anyway, the referee should have disallowed the goal for handball and give France a penalty for the fault on Squillaci who is clearly remove by the defender to prevent him heading the ball.
There were a lot of cheating of course in this game. Irsih had a lot of contacts in the game and carried on playing. Very strangely, after the first goal, at every contacts Irish players were falling down when few minutes before they were standing on their feets for the same contacts... this is also pure cheating.

By AjdeDD.. Posted November 19 2009 at 12:37 PM.

I think Henry should be punished for his actions. He clearly cheated and should not get away with it. It has deprived many GENUINE footballers of a chance to play in a world cup and sets a bad example to youngsters. After all they will argue that if Henry can cheat and not be punished then so can they.

Henry shoud be banned from the world cup or at least suspended for the first round

By brian.. Posted November 19 2009 at 12:36 PM.

It was cheating. Why don't FIFA do something about it? Make a stand and punish Henry for his wicked ways. Cheats cannot be allowed to prosper

By Kevin Motta.. Posted November 19 2009 at 12:40 PM.

Yes the match should be replayed. The player cheated, how the lineman missed it no one knows?
Saying it was the referee fault as an excuse is and an insult to every football fan. Start a new precedent don't let the cheats win. What is this now the second 'hand of God'.

By John MCCrystal.. Posted November 19 2009 at 12:04 PM.

This is an absolute DISGRACE to football ... it is clear to every single person that Henry Cheated !! .. its instinct to handle once but to CONTROL the ball the second time with your hand is not instinctive . REPLAY THE GAME !!!! MY GAME IS FAIR PLAY !!! FOOTBALLS GAME IS FAIR PLAY .. SO PROVE IT !!!!>>> I agree with Diarmuid ..>>A controversial disallowed goal from the 2006 world cup qualifiers, made uzbekistan and bahrain replay the game, so why cant ireland get a replay,

By Keith Counihan.. Posted November 19 2009 at 11:41 AM.

Absolute tragedy for Ireland. They are the team who shuld now be given a replay due to this terrible injustice!

By Carol Leeson.. Posted November 19 2009 at 11:36 AM.

Come on France, do the decent thing. You'd beat them 5-0 in a replay anyways

By Max.. Posted November 19 2009 at 11:35 AM.

Did he cheat? or was it just an instinctual action that happened? i say the latter. He did what any of us in the same situation would do 7 out 10 times. This should not taint every other great accomplishment he has achieved in his career. This man has won every accolade there is to win in the sport. One brain snap should not tarnish his reputation. I feel sorry for the irish however they should have done the job at home. lets not make TH14 the scape goat lets move forward and hope for Irelands sake that he leads his country all the way as a true sportsman can, to kind of redeem himself and show us what a champion he is and always will be..

By dreamcast.. Posted November 19 2009 at 11:25 AM.

Its truely unfair. But thats football 4 u. I belive henry is not 2 blame but the ref. 4 de irland, de should take it n move on cus de actuall had enough time to seal d game which d didnt. For the video stuff, d early de better cuz many of dis will surely happen in world cup. 4 de replay nothing like dat, instead let dem play penalties

By COOL C.. Posted November 19 2009 at 11:18 AM.

As a young Irish fan I am confused at how an obvious break of the rules has handed frace a place in the WC. This has to go to a replay if any justice is within fifa. SHAME!

By Diarmuid.. Posted November 19 2009 at 11:14 AM.

A controversial disallowed goal from the 2006 world cup qualifiers, made uzbekistan and bahrain replay the game, so why cant ireland get a replay, france dont deserve to be there, with big headed lasanna diarra and cheats like henry, and this coming from an arsenal fan!

By Ian.. Posted November 19 2009 at 11:02 AM.

Certainly, Henry will be tainted by this. Equally, setting up a replay may be a bad precedent, so ireland will have to bite the bullet and move on..... Everyone seems to be on their side and the world cup will always be there.

By Bryan.. Posted November 19 2009 at 10:52 AM.

What happened is Shameful. The game should be replayed and the referee banned for life!
