BIG GUNS IN £20M RODWELL BATTLE

Fergie fights Chelsea for Everton starlet

RODWELL: United and Chelsea target

MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea are locked in a £20million battle for Everton teen Jack Rodwell.

Both clubs see the elegant midfielder as a key target and are willing to force the Toffees' hand with lucrative offers.

Chelsea have already bid £14m for the starlet, with United valuing him at £16m.

But with Goodison boss David Moyes desperate to keep hold of the brightest talent to come out of the academy since Wayne Rooney, it will take around £20m to prise 18-year-old Rodwell away.

He signed a five-year deal in February and is not desperate to leave Everton - where he has become a permanent fixture in the side.

However, the lure of Old Trafford and the chance to play alongside Rooney would certainly be a factor especially as it would mean not having to leave the North West.

With doubts over the long-term fitness of Owen Hargreaves, Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on another holding midfielder and England Under-21 regular Rodwell is seen as the perfect option.

United wanted to offer cash plus youngster Matthew James for Rodwell.

But it was made clear to them that only a straight cash deal would be considered.

stay at everton jack why go to either chelski/manu you wont get regular foot ball like
you do now . oh with the cuts at manu they cant afford you and chelsea they have alot of players out and are still better than any team in prem and i am an evertonian.

This is another example where the EPL is such a lop sided playing field: if there is any outstanding player outside the big four (or five now0 you can be sure he will be "targeted" by the rich teams.

By Jonathan D.. Posted November 17 2009 at 10:11 AM.

He can't be that good to pay £20M

By arso.. Posted November 16 2009 at 6:49 PM.

terry talking out of your backside as usual. Bent was the top english epl goal scorer last season with limited starts and will be again this year £16m for a top goal scorer is nothing in today's market. the fact that he is english makes him worth more if anything.

By jo.. Posted November 16 2009 at 5:04 AM.

He would be a good signing being young and from the north west...one thing for sure any foreign player coming from the likes of seville or valencia would'nt let their cat in live in manchester...players wifes have a say in their destination and the little smoke won't be on any ones agenda let alone a little village called stretford..lol!!..fyi Villa's children are his priority and he has stated he won't leave spain...can see him joining the biggest club in the world in january to link up with kaka and CR...

Ditch Carrick and get rodwell, hes got great potential. Its gonna be another great purchase from the great Sir Alex. £20m is worth it, get out the checkbooks before the yankees decide to do something with all those money!

By soboro.. Posted November 15 2009 at 11:32 PM.

when, not if, this transfer to man u comes off, it will confirm to all us everton fans what we have suspected for a long time. we now are nothin more than the man u feeder club/ retirement home. Theres no doubt in my mind that Moyes wants fergies job and he will have all our best young talent already there, it all makes sense when you look at the bigger picture.
And to all you 'fans' of big clubs Everton have 9 league titles, small clubs dont have this many titles in they're trophy cabnet, trophys and history make clubs big not money

By ste.. Posted November 15 2009 at 10:52 PM.

Rodwell is a invesment for the near future and Chelsea have to work hard to sign this talent young player and they have to do battle not only with Man Utd only but with the cream of European billionares clubs which are after the services of the Toffees prodige son.

By mike chelsea fan- Malta.. Posted November 15 2009 at 7:19 PM.

moyes shouldn't sell rodwell. he's sold one player (rooney) whos now world class so rodwell might become world class so moyes should hold on to him.

By charlie .. Posted November 15 2009 at 5:31 PM.

Rodwell is worth £30 million because lescott is worth 22million and johnson 18million. Thats how football is now days. I totally believe he will be the surprise package going to the world cup. For all those everton fans who watch him every week, we all believe he will be one of the best. Not the finished article but will be there in a couple of years.

By Lynch.. Posted November 15 2009 at 4:59 PM.

If Rodwell is worth 20 million Just what is Fabregas worth??? & I class myself as a MUFC fan!!

By KEVIN .. Posted November 15 2009 at 3:14 PM.

This ones in the bag for UNITED!! "Do as we say EVERFLOP or else"!!

By brian.. Posted November 15 2009 at 3:04 PM.

the premier league has always been about money, and little else.

football becomes meaningless if you have to buy your way to the top. you may as well auction the trophies off at the start of the season and be done with it.

By ron knox.. Posted November 15 2009 at 3:04 PM.

Rob Mac, actually i'm a Chelsea fan.
What i was saying is, yes he is worth paying extra bucks to buy out his contract, but he needs to learn from players and coaches that can guide him. He is a great prospect playing in an ordinary team, a shame because last year you guys showed huge promise before being cut down by unfortunate injuries.

By Andy.. Posted November 15 2009 at 3:07 PM.

man untied should buy daviad villa and silva with frank riberly and carlton cole we would win the treble for a least 6 years. there r them missing players for united come on alex get that check book out in jan all them would cost 90million and how we sold ronlado for.

By riz.. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:56 PM.

chelsea fan and i dont think we should be paying £20 million for a player who has potential, we have Essien and Lampard in central positions in midfield, who both are world class, if he's even a quarter of what they are at their ages then he'll do well, steer clear he's nothing special

By steven.. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:55 PM.

Hahahaha 20m for him? More like 20p

By matt.. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:28 PM.

Moyes should create a bidding war between chelsea and man utd, then we could cash in on an average midfielder, who will never be world class.

By alex from delaware.. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:08 PM.

i think 15m is more realistic, i also think hed go to united over chelsea as like rooney he wouldnt need to move house as were not far away.

i think hed be a good signing & the move would be good for everybody as everton make 15m & also can buy 2 players with the money. i also wouldnt rule our park going to everton as part of the deal

By Kevin.. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:14 PM.

well the lad as done well .but thats what you expect from david Moyes .he is worth all that cash the clubs are offering and more .if he wants to go i wish him well . the two clubs that are after him may be big clubs .but i would rather see a lad going to one of them than a middle of the road team that cant win more than 1 game in nine. and there will be a big Probability they will be on channel 5 in the very near future

By bri the blue.. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:01 PM.

as a Man United Supporter I Think that Rodwell of Everton would be a Good Buy for Our Man United Team and It would be Nice to see Laurent Blanc or Mourinho as Our next Man United manager Man United Should Buy Steven Gerrard of Liverpool and Torres of Liverpool and William Gallas of Arsenal and other Good Players Like anelka of Chelsea and Huddlestone of Tottenham and Carlton Cole and ryan Babel of Liverpool and NGOG of Liverpool Man United Should Buy Darren Bent as well Man United Should go Out and Buy Good Players who can score Goals for Our Man United Team .

By Jonathan Lambert .. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:00 PM.

i think it would be a good buy for man united, at least he will be able to proove how good he really is by playing in the big european games and prooving himself with the worlds very best.

By Anwar HUSSAIN.. Posted November 15 2009 at 1:43 PM.

STOP talking ridiculous money you idiots.. £20 million for a teenager is crazed! We only paid £12m for Ron when he was 18!! So no, Rodwell is NOT worth £20m and that kind of money will goto his head and ruin him before he even develops into whatever he is going to become.. in your own scouser slang: "calm-down calm-down!"

By JUSTO.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:44 PM.

I just wonder if Kenwright dare sell Rodwell. What kind of message does that send out?. Moyes is obviously trying to build, on a very limited budget. We develop young talent and then sell them. The other good players in the squad such as Arteta, Jagielka and the rest, will see Rodwells sale as a statement from a club treading water and leave!. What would Moyes reaction be too?. Really pees me off that its always the big greedy clubs throwing thier weight around, to keep thier fat snouts at the trough! Do you remember Rooneys T shirt "Once a Blue Always a Blue"?. Now he's saying he's Red for life ! Ha, fingers crossed

By Rob.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:47 PM.

To anfield road, must warm your heart to see Rafa move on any good local lad and bring in spanish and south american nomarks.
You wish your academy could produce the likes of Rodwell.
But with Rafa it never will, Carragher and Gerrard the last local lads to make it at liverpool for a long time. You'd rather buy the likes Pennant, Babel, Kygiakos and Paletta than play local kids. I guess the fans dont care, all southerners and norweigians.
Rodwell is Englands future, you know it, and it hurts.
Anyone else remember when Liverpool used to be a great club... it was long time ago

By CJ.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:47 PM.

Good to see Liverpool fans on here. Yes, we'll never have your glory. But neither will we have your shame. EFC

By Frank.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:52 PM.

He is a good player and Everton under Moyes keep producing fantastic young talent. £20 mill for an 18 year old, yeah abit high but with him in the team 1 league title makes the money back. We made the £30mill back from Rooney in 2 years so its not that bad. I remember the days when united brought the grat young talent through and still are, i think we could spend the £20 mill but remeber we have Gibson who has a mass of passing talent, strong and also scores goals. In years to come they could make a great partnership

By Wayne Broz.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:27 PM.

I'm an Everton fan and I think off the ball, Rodwell is very average. If these offers are for real I hope we bite their hands off.

By Malc.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:31 PM.

I watch Rodwell play regularly and the offer of £14 million surely has the digits the wrong way round. Football is now a business, and anyone can see that barring injury he could go on to be the best English midfielder for many years in which case as he is 18 now, his sell on value would create a massive profit for whoever buys him. For his personal development he would be far better off staying where he is and as he seems to have have his feet on the ground Everton may well be able to rebuff all offers for a year or two at least.

By Sean Trivass.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:37 PM.

I have supported man u for 10 years and would love to see john rodwell play for us, we need a new goalie and he would fit the bill, alan ferguson is a great manager

By dave in surrey.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:18 PM.

everton are a small feeder club.

most everton fans are from north wales

By Anfield Road.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:25 PM.

Not seen too much of this kid,but he does look a good 'un!
Should he move to another club then I would hope he chooses Utd. We seem to have a connection at the moment with a number of Utd lads wearing the Everton shirt in recent years. I think you an rule out Loonypool for obvious reasons, citeh are behind Everon in terms of size and history,so that leaves the cockney's and Utd.
As mentioned in an earlier post ,we have Cleverley and Pogba coming through, also Norwood and Eikrem, all top quality so the lad would be in good company!
Rooney is adored at Old Trafford...and this lad could be also.

By steve.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:10 PM.

if rooney stayed at everton
everton would be a top 4 teams competing for the title
they'd have had a good defense in lescott
strike in rooney
now this guy
if all these star players stay at the so called ''small clubs''
they wouldnt be so small

By billy.. Posted November 15 2009 at 11:55 AM.

I remember all these types of comments when united paid the £30 odd million plus add-ons, for which we are still being paid now for Rooney, and people saying he s no way near worth this kind of money, well look at him now he was clearly worth alot more he has even captained england (yesterday).

Rodwell, is thee best player to have come out of the everton academy ahead of rooney, just because he is not a striker in a glamour position, does not take any value away from him £20 million is an insult and id expect anything less than £40 million with future addons would be the only way everton would sell our most prized asset ever.

By Jay.. Posted November 15 2009 at 11:25 AM.

Not worth £20m? United need to realise the days when they can rip Everton off are long gone. United still owe us for the Rooney rip off, so there should be a £10-£15m bounty just for that. If Lescott is worth £22m, then Rodwell being a better player all around and 10 years younger must be £30m plus. United as always are trying to get in there early before he becomes an England regular by buying on the cheap. This time i'm afraid you will have to pay the going rate which is not £20m.

By Adrian Gaveglia .. Posted November 15 2009 at 11:16 AM.

I think thats a lot of money to pay for someone that young and unproving but in saying that i hope its Utd who get him

By james L.. Posted November 15 2009 at 11:04 AM.

everton, will always be a small club under the shadow of liverpool, thats why they car,nt hold on to any good players they bring through

By roy.. Posted November 15 2009 at 10:52 AM.

i think they should get him for a lower price i dont think he is worth that amount of cash

By james.. Posted November 15 2009 at 10:56 AM.

All those of you saying he's not worth £20M are right, he's worth at least £30M up front with add ons as he progresses, as he undoubtedly will, if the world cup was in 2011 instead of 2010, he would be in the squad, the lad is already oozing class and will only get better as he gets more experienced, those of you saying he's a "nothing" player must have your armchairs facing away from the telly {you obviously don't attend football games} otherwise you wold know better.

By Steve blue.. Posted November 15 2009 at 11:01 AM.

To Chelsea Andy and Craig80 suspect u support LFC

Andy check your clubs history pal and ours , you're the small club not us who got lucky and Craig LFC fans can never talk down to evertonians check John K Boyds post, u live off the past

By rob mac.. Posted November 15 2009 at 10:49 AM.

Who cares what man united will pay for him (thats if we get him) im just happy to see young english talent playing for my club. i would hate to turn up at the theatre of dreams to see 11 foreign players running out. Rodwell and Cleverly will be both England players within 2 years..

By Steve.. Posted November 15 2009 at 10:36 AM.

Of course jack isnt worth 20 mill nobody is But with the new uefa rules coming in the top teams need english players and especially players who are versitial he will be able to play in midfield defence and score afew goals But the problem is that anybody who starts to make an impresion is on the shopping list of man u man c and chelsea and if city want him they will get him man u are only interested in profit and are to tight to buy him or anybody else if another top team wants them they dont compete THE sooner tv money stagnates fat cats get out the better for real english football j boyd

By john k boyd.. Posted November 15 2009 at 10:16 AM.

Why do Liverpool fans always call everton a small club......Liverpool fans you really need to look up your history, if it wasn't for everton there would be no liverpool, you wouldn't even have a football ground. Liverpool fc original team name was going to be everton athletic, Everton also gave you your crest so just remember that next time you think they are a small club.

By Craig80.. Posted November 15 2009 at 10:24 AM.

good players do not stay at small clubs

By KOPITE.. Posted November 15 2009 at 9:57 AM.

I agree with kharnan (re: jon smart's comments) why would Rodwell even consider taking a step backwards and agreeing to going on loan to fatta's perennial no-hopers!

By steve.. Posted November 15 2009 at 9:20 AM.

thanks to everton, our/man utd's feeder club. with the quota coming all big clubs need to ensure they have a good balance of talent both domestically & internationally.

By shakeel, jhb, sa.. Posted November 15 2009 at 9:09 AM.

Rodwell isnt worth 20million YET believe me he will be soon enough and more, that lad has got a great future ahead of him. Future Everton Captain & future England Captain. COYB

By Kev M.. Posted November 15 2009 at 8:40 AM.

with regards to JONATHAN SMARTS comments why would chelsea or man u if they bought this player then loan him back to {rafa,s} team it dosent make sence ????

By kharnan.. Posted November 15 2009 at 8:33 AM.

The majority of the purchase price is dependent on the length of contract that currently exists, why comment if you do not understand the economics....?
Considering Everton have recently tied him to a 5 year contract, 20 million really isn't a great deal for a player who is now a first team regular and has the potential that he does.

By Andy.. Posted November 15 2009 at 8:24 AM.

Chelsea would just loan him back to the small Mersey club since he's not yet good enough to be playing for a top of the table side.

By Jonathan Smart.. Posted November 15 2009 at 7:20 AM.

I give up!

How does someone rate them in the 16 Million bracket, he's played less than 50 games for Everton and he's now worth 20 million....joke.

Is he better than Gazza who was sold for 2 million to spurs, NO.

By Michael.. Posted November 15 2009 at 7:15 AM.

Rodwell is the next Gerrard or Lampard.

And that isn't worth £25 million.

It's worth £75 million.

Seriously. He will very soon be a world class player.

By Nick.. Posted November 15 2009 at 6:12 AM.

how about our young gun?
wilshere is 100000times better thn all yours player not to forget remsey merida walcott.hahaa lmfao

By jack.. Posted November 15 2009 at 4:46 AM.

A lot of these comments are just showing up a lack of knowledge of the player, comparing him to Milner and Cattermole is laughable, Carlton Cole, well thats just an insult!! Evertonians have known for a long time, this kid isn't decent, he is the next £30m prospect, he is Rooney calibre. He will leave, it's inevitable, it's just a case of when. yes, he's 18, he's a work in progress. If you see him week in week out though, if you understand the game...it's a nailed on certainty this kid will be one of the best midfielders in europe, up with the Gerrard's, the pomp Vieira's etc. £30m in this day and age, given the service they would see from him as with Rooney....bargain!!! Talent like Rodwell is few and far between, as the spansih would say PAGAR!!!

By Staveros.. Posted November 15 2009 at 3:44 AM.

It does amaze me sometimes. Man Utd have enough quality in their youth team that will be pushing for places in the next few years. Pogba has been Viera like in his run outs for the youth team. Petrucci, Morrison and Cleverly all have good futures ahead of them in the game. Macheda, Wlebeck and King...... £20m for Rodwell, £20m for Carlton Cole....you journo's must be having a laugh. United have more talent in their reserves and youth sides.

By Col.. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:08 AM.

this tallies with what rooney is supposed to have told an everton fan a couple of months ago I.E. that when he went to united the deal was agreed 9 months before everton made it public and that the deal for rodwell to go to united is already agreed for the end of the season

dont be so sure cj with are track record of selling our best players. We have no ambition anymore and bill kenwright is a liar. When this homegrown rule by uefa got confirmed i knew chelsea and man utd would come sniffing at rodwell

By ste.. Posted November 15 2009 at 2:00 AM.

This is why England will always be also rans in international tournaments. Building players up to be bigger then they really are. This is crazy. Whats this kid supposed to be? The new Xavi or Iniesta? He might be a decent player but anyone who saw the 2 Benfica matches against Everton will realize he is still work in progress. 20 million?! ha... who's next in that bracet? Cattermole for running around like a headless chicken? Milner for getting a few international caps?

By Ryan.. Posted November 15 2009 at 1:28 AM.

20 million ? they can treble that and they still wont get him. Jacks more than happy where he is.

Englands future captain has no need to go warm a bench elsewhere. You;d have to be clueless not to see his talent and potential.

Once again the everton academy is providing the best english talent when others cant.

By CJ.. Posted November 15 2009 at 12:57 AM.

Its ridiculous why teams shell out big sums for these average unskilled English players instead of going for the talented and cheaper players scattered all over Europe and the World . 20 mil ??? You must be joking . Look at what happened with Darren Bent , 16mil for that ?? Now i also read tha Carlton Cole is woeth around 20 mil , people , are u mad ?? I m a MUFC fan and i dont see Fergie being that stupid ....
