The Premier League new-boys watched Cork City's Long and St Patricks' Stevens in action on Friday night and will make another check on Long when Cork play Sligo on Monday night.
Owen Coyle is preparing to table bids as he looks to bolster his squad in January to keep the Clarets scrapping for points in the top flight.
Long, 19, is a centre-back with a growing reputation in Ireland and has already had a trial with Preston.
St Pat's star Stevens was signed from UCD and has performed with distinction at left-back whilst also representing his country at Under-18 level.
It has been proved in the past that bargains can be had from across the Irish Sea and former Republic of Ireland international Coyle has good contacts in the country.
