JAMES McFADDEN has told the News of the World that he does not fear a major injection of new talent at St Andrew's.

Birmingham City are planning a January transfer splurge when the window reopens after Carson Yeung's takeover with some reports claiming Alex McLeish will have as much to £20million to play with.

Aware of comparisons with Sunday's opponents Manchester City, the Scotland international believes Yeung's investment is vital to enable Blues to compete at the highest level.

With survival the key, McFadden appreciates the push for safety will now have considerably more bulk behind it.

"If the new chairman makes drastic changes it does effect everybody but we can't think about that," he told the News of the World.

"It's all about the here and now. There is too much takeover talk going on in football but you have to invest.

"We've just come up from the Championship so we know our main aim is to stay up.

"We're not just here to make up the numbers. If changes in January help us stay up that is what counts.

"As players we need to be up for the fight. There should never be a point where you don't compete for places.

"You need to fight for your jersey whether you're at Birmingham or Manchester City."

McFadden saw his penalty saved by Shay Given in the goalless draw at the weekend as Birmingham deserved at least a point from their scrap with the big-spenders from Manchester.
