A new star is emerging in Mexico. At only 20-years-old, Nestor Calderon Henriquez is already a promise starting to become a reality.
Calderon made his debut for Toluca during the 2008/2009 season and things could not have gone much better, as his team won the Apertura title. After playing in 27 games and scoring four goals he was awarded the prize of "Rookie of the Apertura."
In the 2009/2010 season, it seems that Calderon not only continues to perform where he left off but is improving all the time. With six goals in 12 games, the youngster is becoming a dominate force on the left wing of the Toluca attack. Despite his good form and the superlatives being thrown his way, Calderon has stayed humble and just wants to keep on working.
Calderon's impressive performances have caught the eye of Mexico national team coach Javier Aguirre. And for the first time in his career, Calderon was invited into the Mexican national squad, where he made his first international appearance in a friendly match against Colombia at the beginning of October.
The diminutive midfielder has very good technique and he knows how to defend the ball well with his body when he is in possession. He moves well on the pitch and likes to play one touch football as he is good at short passes.
Usually he runs towards the left flank but he also likes to cut into the middle from time to time during the game. He is very precise with his shooting and even though he is left footed, he can also use his right foot when needed. Defensively, don't let Calderon's small size fool you. He is a very good tackler and is very precise with the timing of his slide tackles.
Despite Calderon's breakthrough during the last year, his growth as a player isn't over as he still needs to improve his long passing and to get physically stronger. He also needs to be more assertive (offensively and defensively) during the full 90 minutes and to be more demanding of the ball.
Nevertheless, as one of the youngest, talented and most intelligent players in the Toluca team and in Mexican football, it seems that Calderon has a very bright future ahead of him. And as he keeps on getting better it won't be long until he becomes a well known player all around the world.
