And he reckons he would have kept Newcastle in the Premier League had he not been taken ill in February and needed triple-bypass heart surgery.
Kinnear, 62, said: "I'm pretty sure that the run I got the team on at the time, it would have seen us through. But it's a bit late for that now."
His St James' Park contract ran out at the end of last season, when Alan Shearer was expected to take over. Yet with all the confusion over who might replace owner Mike Ashley if he can sell up and who they might want as manager, Kinnear is keen to keep himself in the frame.
He added: "I feel as fit as a fiddle. I love the game and I'm desperate to get back into it. Mike knows I'm still available."
