EVERTON JOIN RACE FOR JOHNSON

EVERTON have joined the race for Middlesbrough's highly-rated winger Adam Johnson.

Toffees boss David Moyes made a personal check on the 22-year-old at Preston yesterday.

Johnson's contract runs out next summer but Boro are hoping the expected arrival of new manager Gordon Strachan this week will convince Johnson to pen a new deal at the Riverside.

Everton and Sunderland will both make January bids for the England under-21 star in an attempt to snap up the talented youngster on the cheap.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has also been to watch the flyer earlier this month and liked what he saw.

Johnson has dazzled at Championship level and took his tally for the season to an impressive nine with another goal in the 2-2 draw at Preston on Saturday.

Boro midfielder Gary O'Neil is also set to quit the club in the wake of Gareth Southgate's departure and is keen on a return to old club Portsmouth in the January transfer window.

Adam is better staying at the Boro where he is assured of first team football and making a big impact.

Boro's first team goalkeeper last year Ross Turnbull moved to Chelsea in the summer, he is 3rd choice goalkeeper at Chelsea and will be lucky if he gets a first team game all season. There are many other examples of this in the Premier League.
