JOSE MOURINHO is the man Manchester United want to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson - and he will get the job with Fergie's blessing.

Preliminary talks have already been held at the highest levels within Old Trafford and the name of Mourinho has topped the agenda.

United officials believe Sir Alex will retire at the end of next season, when he will be approaching his 69th birthday.

A United insider told us: "Mourinho is the name being mentioned most behind the scenes among the top brass. He has the kind of personality and successful record needed to take on the enormous task of succeeding Sir Alex.

"He became very close to Fergie during his time at Chelsea and there is a mutual respect. The Glazers will rely heavily on Sir Alex in the naming of his replacement.

"Fabio Capello would be another contender because Fergie rates him highly too but the Italian has already stated the England job will be his last in football."

There is support for Mourinho in the Old Trafford dressing room where the influential Rio Ferdinand has privately indicated the Inter Milan coach would be the only man to replace Fergie.

Mourinho, who dubbed himself 'The Special One', won two league titles with Chelsea but left a year ago, joining Inter on a three-year deal in June.

But he said this week: "I'm in love with the English league and I'll definitely return one day. That's what I want to do after Inter."

A highly-placed Chelsea source said: "Jose always made his love of United very clear, in fact he was obsessed with them and talked about being in charge of the biggest club in the world.

"He wanted to test himself in Italy when he left the Bridge, but it was obvious to most people he wanted to come back here with United to haunt us."

Ever since fergie mentioned that he will be retiring in three years, it struck me then that mourinho could be the next united manager. He signed a three year contract just about the same time as fergie planned for his retirement, three years to be exact. Im united to the core and i think mourinho could well be the right choice, i would love to say roy keane but i don't think he is still quite ready for such a big challenge. Now we all know mourinho likes to leave after a couple of years, which could be good for keano to get abit more experience then take on the reigns once mourinho has vanished. But mourinho at the moment is the right choice i don't think he will play boring football not with the type of players that are currently at united, there too much of an attacking side. He might have been one for spending at chelsea and why not with all that money been thrown at him, but he also proved he don't need money to be successful, before he went to chelsea he guided other teams with hardly the financial backing like chelsea and guided them to success with good attractive football, which i think with the current crop at united he will adapt the same attacking mentality as he did well before he went to chelsea.

These is a reason Sir A.F wanted Mourinho: when he coached Chelski team, in 10 matchs from P.L he faced to A.F, He (Mourinho) won 5 games, drawed 4, and just losed 1! There is only one the Coach names Mourinho can overstride sir Alex Ferguson in P.L!

If Mourinho can, who says Samson Siasia can not be better...

By Kolawole.. Posted October 31 2008 at 2:36 PM.

I think Man Un deserves a better trainer than Mourinho who
is also not available at this time.
I think we should focus our attention to some good italian
trainer like Capello.

Those of you on here that are suggesting that mourinho will adopt a defensive approach with united need your heads checked. He worked with what he had at chelsea, which was a solid back 4, 2 strong midfielders and one fluent goal scorer in drogba.

He does understand the united tradition and will play in accordance with that. The fact that he has history with chelski does not affect the passion and determination he will bring to the job but enhances it as the manner in which he left chelsea suggests there is no other team in the league that he will enjoy beating more....he has unfinished business which translates to "i made chelsea...and i will break chelsea!"

like it or not, Fergie rarely got the better of Mourinho tactically in over 10 meetings.

Fergie knows whos the man for the job....the one manager who is better than him.

Sit back and watch the the trophy truck back up into OT...

i've read posts prior to this and noticed that most of my fellow mancunians are staunchly against Mour and would rather see the likes of homegrown talents to take over. However, as much as I would like to see Roy take over some day, or someone like Steve bruce or even cantona, at the risk of appearing blasphemous, i just dont think that they can keep the club where it is, much less take it to another level. With that in mind, I don't see anyone more qualified that Mour to take over Sir Alex's chair, what more with his blessing... GGMU!!

Jose has a contract with Inter for the next 3 years!!
We want him to stay!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We wont let him go away!

By Benny.. Posted October 29 2008 at 10:34 AM.

Bring back Cantona as Manager and we die happy!!!

By Moroil.. Posted October 29 2008 at 3:44 AM.

I believe ManU is a family with traditions, of which Jose Mourinho is not a part. Besides, United have a style of play which is completely foreign to Jose. Sir Alex must rise above pettiness and recommend one of his many proteges to take his place. He would be a lot prouder a few years later, when retrospectively, he sees Roy Keane (the enforcer), driving ManU to higher heights.
Jose is a pompous oaf who does not deserve that office, when we have competent family members around, a la Marke Hughes, Steve Bruce, just to name a few others. Moreover, it would say a lot for British soccer, should Sir Alex show some confidence in his crop of lads by getting one of them to succeed him. Don't worry about discipline, Sir Alex, Roy motivated the team as captain for many years and has proved beyond all reasonable doubts, he has the abilitly to perform and a manager. If Roy Keane could lead ManU, so successfully as a captain, what would he do, given the resources of ManU. We would be walking on water, for sure.
How do we eventually get a Brit. to be in charge of England? That is the route. The more British managers, the better it is for British soccer. That is why I am pleased with the appointment of the dedicated former Arsenal and England captain as Portsmouth's manager. The hope of reward sweetens labour, indeed.

By Soljay.. Posted October 28 2008 at 5:17 PM.

we dont need Mourinho...Roy Kean is our favourite choice

By sslee.. Posted October 28 2008 at 4:28 PM.

What about Paul Ince, great work going through the ranks, great work ethic and led by example. Jose produced boring football with such a great crop of players.

By Tommy.. Posted October 28 2008 at 12:14 PM.

Pls we the united fans do not want JOSE MOURINHO as Manu coach,we have to start seeking for another scotish if we realy want to continue from the past legends.

By Tommy.. Posted October 28 2008 at 11:20 AM.

No doubt Mourinho is a great coach, but I fear he doen't understand the tradition of MU. Players like Fletch, Sheasy may be off loaded asap.
AS a Brit O'neill is better suited as he knows the ins & outs of the great club of ours.
I say go for Martin O'neill.

By Hasanuddin.. Posted October 28 2008 at 9:47 AM.

It wud b difficult 2 replace fergie,he has alot of things no manager in football can posses, coz he has 2 retire i think martin oneil can achieve big things we the quality of players at old trafford.mourinho a big mouth.

By George,msa.kenya.. Posted October 28 2008 at 7:52 AM.

yea great..now we'd be playing defensive all season and winning by 1-0 scorelines all the time and never winning the champions league..hehe..

By Bob Paisley.. Posted October 28 2008 at 12:01 AM.

when jose was at united everyone hated him and now united fans want jose as their manager to succeed ferguuuson !!!!! im totally as toished

By ribs.. Posted October 27 2008 at 4:59 PM.

mourinho is the man 4 me,as long as he doesnt play the same boring football that was played during his time at chelski !

By barry f... Posted October 27 2008 at 12:41 PM.

José Mourinho in United - FANTASTIC - The best team in the World will be trained by the best coach in the world with all respect by Sir Alex a great coach and a great person.

By Nuno Almeida - Lisbon - Portugal.. Posted October 27 2008 at 9:27 AM.

Hey Nuaq, Carlos sucks at Real Madrid, forced to come back as SAF's assistant and now he sucks with the Portugal national team too. Solskjaer is still new at football and not vocal enough to be the main coach.

Mourinho will bring the silverware, but at what cost? Big Phil should have been the one to manage Man Utd with all the attacking players we have. Too bad he's at Chelsea now...

By dre.. Posted October 27 2008 at 8:55 AM.

it seems good but i fear .......... there will be a boaring football over there on Mourinho's side

By sa.. Posted October 27 2008 at 8:51 AM.

jose is great choice.a special one is best 4 job

By jame.. Posted October 27 2008 at 8:43 AM.

Jose will be an excellent replacement. He's got exactly what it takes to fill Fergie's shoes. Keane has good talent, but I think he needs a few more years to settle in before taking on such a task.

By Theshen.. Posted October 27 2008 at 7:19 AM.

frankly speeking....i really dont wanna fergie to retire.dis guy is impossible to be replaced.touch your then u 'll realize how extremely close fergie to man u.fergie=man u.but if he decided to go..then carlos quiroz will be ma man.......along solsjaer.....anybody agree with me???

By nuaq,malaysian.. Posted October 27 2008 at 5:49 AM.

Mourinho is a brilliant choice, without doubt the best manager to take on the managerial position of the biggest football club in the world

By carlos.. Posted October 26 2008 at 11:34 PM.

Jose Moanio is responsible for the most boring boring boring boring boring football ever played in the EPL. We do NOT want him anywhere near OT. He'll half the fan base inside a month and half it again inside three. A disaster. The man is incapable of playing attractive, attacking football. Stay away from my club, please.

By bruce thomas.. Posted October 26 2008 at 11:31 PM.

Jose Morhinho 1st choice otherwise i would like Mark Hughes.

By James .. Posted October 26 2008 at 9:50 PM.

Mourinho is a great choice!Lets see if the scousers and chelski can keep their chin up!! O'Neil should the 2nd choice.

By sad sheikh from nuneaton.. Posted October 26 2008 at 8:00 PM.

hello am a blackburn rovers fan and i do belive roy keane bit out of oder and mourino he just cause trouble and walk away frm ppl best i belive is eric cantona who got blood of united too

By irfan.. Posted October 26 2008 at 7:59 PM.

why tha hell is wrong wit pple? roy keane ma ass the guy talks to much, martin oneil iz dha man for me....

By tony.. Posted October 26 2008 at 8:53 PM.

The biggest job in the football world. When SAF retires and if Jose was offered the job he would only stay for 3 years max. Don't think he would do any better than SAF but still a good short term replacement. Should Martin O'Neill be offered the job, it would take a season or 2 meet the demands of MU and MU fans. Season 3 and beyond (because Martin O'Neill would stay for the long term) would see United where they like to be.

Martin O'Neill for me.

By steve.. Posted October 26 2008 at 7:57 PM.

Martin O'Neill for me. A great motivator. Keane has done well but has a screw loose. Bruce in time perhaps with Giggsy helping.

By BONZO.. Posted October 26 2008 at 5:46 PM.

MON? you have to be kidding!! If things went wrong for him he'd find a way to walk away just as he will at Villa when the air goes out of the balloon.

By Joe.. Posted October 26 2008 at 5:01 PM.

What about Bolton's ginger mourinho??

By farakh.. Posted October 26 2008 at 5:34 PM.

Roy Keane won't be up to the standard M.U, expects, + his miscievous character won't fit in.
Martin O'Neil and Jose Mourinho are the best to manage this great fooball team.

By bisou.. Posted October 26 2008 at 4:24 PM.

come on give the job to the only man' and thats keano!!

By kieran.. Posted October 26 2008 at 4:06 PM.

sick of people namin keane as fave i am a die hard united fan but they would only pick him because hes a fan fave, mourinho is the right man with the pedigree and flare would bring alot to a team and get even more out of rooney and ronaldo, even steve bruce after a few years hell be a top class manager

By pete.. Posted October 26 2008 at 3:56 PM.

Ramos for Utd. that will give the rest of us a chance

By kenny davie.. Posted October 26 2008 at 2:00 PM.

Mourinho would be a great choice but the only problem is how long would he want to stay for? He has already said he wants to manage Portugal at some point in the future. My choice would be Martin O'Neil. He gets the best out of the team and is very loyal.

By Mark.. Posted October 26 2008 at 1:45 PM.

I hope jose does not go to united, because Chelsea and rest would not get a look in

By norman.. Posted October 26 2008 at 11:57 AM.

Jose is a great manager but not for United he is too cautious

By John.. Posted October 26 2008 at 11:40 AM.

I've been banging on about mourinho becoming Utd manager for weeks now. Did i have inside knowledge? NO, Have i common sense? YES,

By Tom West Belfast Red.. Posted October 26 2008 at 9:52 AM.

martin o'neil oh brother what as he ever done, not a lot, forget him,roy keane, maybe, but choice between the three mourinio, querous would be the one for me tho.

By david hope.. Posted October 26 2008 at 10:15 AM.

as much as i love roy keane, he isn't the manager for us. he spends too much money without a justified comeback. There's only one successor to Fergie I want and that's Martin O'Neil.

By rob.. Posted October 26 2008 at 9:45 AM.

i wouldnt want mourinho at arsenal.....

By marcogunner.. Posted October 26 2008 at 9:38 AM.

jose would be no good for man u as they havent got billions to spend and he will get cheesed off and walk out its got to be roy keane robbo the manc red yes manc red

By robbo.. Posted October 26 2008 at 9:40 AM.

united should keep it in the family...roy keane knows the united way,the mentality, the need for manchester united to have a strong background of british players.united fans do not want a foreign team like arsenal. salford red

By david cannell.. Posted October 26 2008 at 8:48 AM.

As long as he playes beautiful football why not, he is the one to take cahrge a top mannager for the top club, he is good I like one thing at him when he makes changes they always bring refreshment to the team.

By Valon.. Posted October 26 2008 at 8:47 AM.

give the job to keano he is the only man for the job!

By paddy.. Posted October 26 2008 at 8:39 AM.

Yes Jose will be agreat asset to the club . Ialso think Carlos Quiros would be the ideal candidante

By mr tee.. Posted October 26 2008 at 8:35 AM.

ARSEN WENGER IS MY CHOICE , HE'S SECOND BEST TO SIR ALEX 'THE GOD' FERGUSON , WITH SPENDING POWER OF MU ( unlike stingy arsenal ) HE CAN CONTINUE ,US PLAYING BEAUTIFUL FOOTBALL & WINNING TROPHIES .. FORGET GRUMPY ,MOODY, MR. VAIN , MOURINIHO ... DEBATE ..

By TONY MAN U.. Posted October 26 2008 at 8:16 AM.

As a Chelsea Fan I can Honestly say there is not a better manager to take over United. Keane is a good manager but Jose is with out doubt the worlds best.

By rick ststin.. Posted October 26 2008 at 7:44 AM.

Please stop mentioning roy keane for the manu job, he is staying at sunderland, utd can have jose.

By Lee.. Posted October 26 2008 at 7:54 AM.

capello lmao.are you having a laugh

england boss who picks 99% of same players of previous england managers

man u should go for jose, least you know yr getting quality

By phil.. Posted October 26 2008 at 6:54 AM.

Looks more like a dream news, lets see if it would really happen. I just love his passion for the game, he might take man-utd to another level. But only time would tell if the dream will come true.

By Yemino.. Posted October 26 2008 at 7:23 AM.

Manchester United must be planning Universal domination for a century. If not, why would they be considering getting Jose Mourinho? We might just as well not kick a ball and handover the cups to them. As far as I'm concerned, this is just what's killing the game - 99.99% predictable results.

By Emeka Aneke.. Posted October 26 2008 at 6:25 AM.

with mourinho at helm after post-ferguson ends at old trafford, will be a massive appointment for utd and the great succesor after gaffer retirement.mourinho has got all qualities which fergie posseses:charisma,iron-feast,no-nonsense attitude, hunger for success, respect from players and managerial skills.he's the one to take utd to the another level and unlimited success, with a massive club like utd,a special needs to be incharge at old trafford and mourinho is the one without any reasonable doubt.

By Dennis Kiilu.. Posted October 26 2008 at 5:27 AM.

Mourinho is the wrong choice for a team like Man United. For one thing he only stays at teams for a couple of seasons. It will be difficult enough for MU to adapt after Fergusons departure without that added instabilty.
Also MU are a team that has always played exciting attacking football, not Mourinhos cautious style.
Better off with someone like Ancelloti or Van Gaal.
Mourinho would do better at Liverpool than MU.

By paddy.. Posted October 26 2008 at 5:17 AM.

You manure glory fans make me laugh.....thought u hated the guy? ,different tone now eh. Then the Roy Keane should be next manager.....why? .....maybe u wernt quite the glory fan when Hughes was about?

By JAZZ.. Posted October 26 2008 at 4:54 AM.

Jose is to jumpy to be in Man U, his temperament is a little dodgy. There is only one man for United thats Martin O'Neil
he is loyal to the club he is at, and only moves on to a new club when he see's the ambition he puts in is not being met with the same passion by board members.

O' Neil for Man U, he is young enough and would have a great career. Jose is a little huffy sometimes.

By angus cooney.. Posted October 26 2008 at 5:03 AM.

Would be fantastic..he was born to mange a big club and now he needs to be given a chance..the clubs he has managed so far are not big enough for the special one..

By Howard Thomas.. Posted October 26 2008 at 3:31 AM.

jose's a big mouth,i doubt he'll win any silverware this season!!

roy keane is the boss in waiting

By muja.. Posted October 26 2008 at 3:03 AM.

Mourinho returning to the EPL and to manage the greatest club in the world Manchester United. It will be great.

By george.. Posted October 26 2008 at 1:13 AM.

Mourinho is a Liverpool man. I doubt he'd do something like this.

By Nige.. Posted October 26 2008 at 1:46 AM.

Jose maybe, but roy keane should be given 1st choice, with or with out fergies blessing

By Tony.. Posted October 26 2008 at 2:22 AM.

No chance,Jose would not go there.
