TEL TO EASE WHITE HART PAIN

Tottenham ready to offer Venables a return

OLD BOSS - Terry Venables
OLD BOSS - Terry Venables

SPURS are ready to offer Terry Venables a shock return to White Hart Lane.

I understand senior figures at the club see former manager Venables as the perfect man to replace under-fire sporting director Damien Comolli.

There has been speculation over Comolli’s position following Tottenham’s fraught transfer window dealings which saw them lose strikers Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov but miss out on replacements Andriy Arshavin and Diego Milito.

Sources at White Hart Lane believe Comolli will be gone before January’s window, leaving the way clear for an astonishing return for Venables.

The former England boss, 65, was forced out of Spurs in 1993 after a bitter battle with Sir Alan Sugar.

But Venables retains close links with Spurs and this week praised chairman Daniel Levy.

He said: “I’ve got to know him over the years and got to like the way he thinks — and the dreams he had for Tottenham, too.”

Levy backed Comolli against ex-boss Martin Jol a year ago. But that relationship now appears not to be as close with the agent Leon Angel becoming more involved in Tottenham’s transfer dealings.

Key figures at Spurs believe Venables can work in tandem with Juande Ramos and he would be intrigued to discuss the possibility of a return — although there has been no contact.

The great El Tel is ready for one last hurrah, but Tottenham and White hart Lane is beyond him, also a football manager he is not ....

He has a great football brain and believe he could well lead a syndicate into buying a struggling team with potential of reaching the Premier division in a couple of seasons.

He should head for Championship contenders...Wolves or may be Bristol City with a take over off, or, if he wanted a real challenge, Crystal Palace are always an option, as Jordan has them up for sale.

British football needs El Tel involved somewhere

If Spurs do not want 'El Tel'...get him to go down the road to Palace, who would welcome him with open arms, and rid ourselves of that 'oink' Warnock.

bring back martin jol, he is the best!

By john. Posted oktober 6 2008 at 10:55 AM.

the director of football has always been a problem at tottenham, venables could help stabilize the situation there and communicate much better with ramos than comolli has done. unfortuneately, ramos accepted this deal where the guys upstairs can hold the team for ransom until the last day of the transfer window, for economic reasons, and sell all our best strikers to the highest bidder. they have to please their stock holders as a public limited company, not the passion of their supporters. back ramos & poyet and not the board, its all we've got at the moment.

Please don't bring that spiv Venables back.A natural born loser if ever I saw one.

What about Kevin Keegan for Spurs, this would be a great laugh, watching KK constantly spit his dummy out and cry about lack of support, etc.

Spurs should have stuck with Jol, or at least lined up Jose Mourinho as a longer term replacement, but if they hadn't let Jol go, Hamburg would never have reached the top of the Bundesliga. So Spurs fans should contemplate about Hamburg a team 2pts ahead of everyone and not 2pts behind everyone. Of course losing against Hull today isn't necessarily a bad thing or even having a points total worse than last season's woeful Derby team, because there is one thing for sure, from this point on their is only way for spurs to go, which is UP (because there isn't much more down left is there?). There is no point in dreaming about Champions League football, but I can't wait for next year and reaching the Championship League playoff final - that will outdo the League Cup final (a competition the Big Four use for their reserve workouts). As El Tel, send him to Sevilla......M.

I have been a spurs fan for 20 years, and i don't think i have ever been as concerned as i am right now, and the worst part is, i really didn't think i would be saying that 2 months ago.

we have made some good moves in the transfer window, and some terrible ones too. oh and John the Blackburn fan, i don't think i have seen someone so upset about the loss of a truly AVERAGE player like Bentley. Enjoy Paul Robinson in goal won't you. Loser.

And i don't think that Venables will make the slightest bit of difference, Ramos needs to get a grip and so do the players. I shudder to think about how much money we are spending each week on players that aren't doing their job.

I've been a Spurs fan for 30 years and we have never been a big club in all that time. Reading the comments from other teams so called "fans", it's obvious I have been wrong. They are so keen to see us go down, the must be really scared of us, Come on Tel and COME ON YOU SPURS.

this guy is underfire?
no offence, but £4.1mil for Dos Santos is a great bit of work, people say he's a flop? i think people are smug.

RAMOS SHOULD ALWAYS PLAY HIS BEST 11 PLAYERS AND NOT BE SWITCHING PLAYERS AROUND .
I CANNOT BELIEVE SOME OF THE SELECTIONS HE HAS MADE.
THE PLAYERS ARE ALSO AT FAULT AND NEED A GOOD KICK UP THE ASS.

Absolutely hilarious. venables is so far past his sell by date. As an Arsenal fan, I truely hope this happens. Spuds are a joke club.

By Boghog. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 11:28 AM.

venables should stayed sugar should have gone first time around, its sugars fault why spurs are in such turmoil. he came in with no idea of football, came in as bully with his cheap amstrad millions and totally disrupted spurs, bring back venners he was always the man for the job, and let the man finish what he started, for gods sake

By cockspur. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 11:17 AM.

i like the fella and hope he gets the chance to work with tottenham again. it wont stop hull city thrashing them 1-4 today! (come on you hull)

By pinky. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 10:58 AM.

YES BRING BACK TERRY HE'S A GREAT GUY KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT. TOO MANY FOREIGN MANAGERS [& PLAYERS] IT ENGLISH FOOTBALL

By jay. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 10:26 AM.

I hope hope Spurs go down, David Bentley left Blackburn in search of Champions League Football, It looks as though he might be getting Championship Football instead!!!

Spurs are good enough to blame Berbatov and moan about Man Utd poaching their players. But when lesser teams that think they are a top 5 team poach my Clubs players, I get a little upset!!!

I really do hope Spurs will be travelling to Scunthorpe next season and watch them fold when the premier league money stops coming in!!!

Afterall, it happened to Leeds, will Spurs be the next? I hope so!!!

After years of watching football and me being a Northern Monkey. I can finally see why West Ham and Arsenal fans hate Spurs!!! In fact, I hope West Ham are the team that send Spurs down to the Championship!!!

Don't worry though Spurs fans, there is a good Chippy in Burnley so it's not all doom and gloom!!!

Let's just forget the DOF role altogether. Yes we need to get rid of Comolli but we don't need to replace him. One manager and one chairman is all we need. And let's not start thinking about January's transfer window yet. We need to get behind the players and the manager we have now, more player movement in and out of the club is not the answer. The club have made some major mistakes with their recent transfer activity but it is time to work with what we have and try and get the best out of them. All we need is for Ramos to get the right players in the right positions, get the formation right and then stick with it! It's the constant changing around of players that is not helping.

spurs need a good scoring partnership with pavelchenko and darren bent is not up to that standard.its ok for him to score lots of goals in pre season tournaments but this is reality now and i honestly think darren bent is no way near to the premiership striker.he will never score goals against any team in premier ship.he didnt manage against newly promoted team then there is no chance against teams like man u and liverpools

By harry. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 8:59 AM.

I think that the spurs players should boycott the tactics that Ramos dishes out and play the old spurs way. 4-4-2. Better still bring back venables and burkinshaw.

By tony. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 8:58 AM.

Comolli has been a disaster from day 1. None of the top clubs have directors of football. Comolli foisted players on Jol he didn't want and it is Comolli who should have been sacked.

By tony. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 8:38 AM.

nothing wrong with jol he was doing a great job but as usual we thought after two good years the board expect us to win the league..now look sold anything decent and no replacements...we have gone backwards a few years again..

By doddle. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 7:39 AM.

Being a staunch West Ham fan to my mind it couldnt happen to a better club. Ders have had a good run over the yearsand now they are feeling the draught

By Ken Stafford. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 7:23 AM.

Venables won't go to the Championship with any club....:)

By D_mac. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 6:56 AM.

Director of football does not work! just forget it, or if there has to be one, let Ramos choose it

By Mac. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 6:24 AM.

TEL WAS MOANING ABOUT BERBA THE OTHER DAY AND SEEMS TO SEE THINGS HOW NORMAL PEOPLE SEE THINGS.THAT IS HE WOULD HAVE DEALT WITH GETTING DECENT REPLACEMENTS FOR KEANE & BERBA. HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO SEE THE OBVIOUS AND NOTICE WE NEED A DMF A LEFT WINGER CB COVER.PLUS HE HAS EXPERIENCE. AND CAN SPEAK TO THE PRESS.BECAUSE RAMOS HATES IT AND GUS SCARES ME SOMETIMES

By NKNKNM;P. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 3:13 AM.

The ongoing crises at The Lane must be overturned by the players who are on the field together with the managments tactics. We are experiencing excactly the same turmoil we had one year ago with Martin Jol and the board in what was in fact better circumstances then those of today! We need our team to perform well and scoring goals for us to get points; all the off field crap that would leave "Home and Away" and "Eastenders" a like lightweight in the drama catagory if compared must end. Are Spurs becoming a "soap" Club? We are currently the laughing point in the Premier league and I don't like it one bit! I'd say "Stand up for Spurs" and give the team the support the team need. We must be the "12th player" the team so desperatly need.

By B.Berg. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 2:02 AM.

I think this would be a master stroke at this time as Terry Venables still has a strong link with Spurs and would better understand the tactics required in the Premier League and thus be more able to assist Mr Ramos and good old Gus with the postional dilemas and formations that seem to be the stumbling block for the Manager at the moment.

By bobspur1. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 1:25 AM.

This would be a good move for Spurs.

By Nemo. Posted oktober 5 2008 at 1:17 AM.

Please!! Not the Venables saga again. Why not see if Baroness Thatcher is free as well!!! Get some young, fresh, British blood in, give Ramos a say in new players, and get some harmony back into the club before we start Championship football!!!
