FA supremo Lord Triesan has pledged to rid the game of the obscenities directed at Campbell by travelling supporters at Fratton Park last weekend.
The FA have spoken to Spurs, Portsmouth and Hampshire police following Pompey’s official complaint and will ensure anybody found guilty faces the ultimate punishment.
An FA source said: “As a Spurs fan, Lord Triesman was especially upset at the sick chants.
"It has been made perfectly clear to both clubs and the police that he expects the heaviest possible punishment for those found to have been involved.”
Spurs are already co-operating with the police who are sifting through CCTV footage in a bid to single out those guilty of baiting the former White Hart Lane hero.
Tottenham safety officer Sue Tilling confirmed: “This club will ban for life any of the mindless individuals proved to be responsible.
“And that is no idle threat. We have taken such action before and we will do so again.”
So yet again the Spurs fans whinge and wine, So Campbell left them, it was ages ago and it happens at other clubs, but because it Spurs they feel more harshly done by than other club, they seem to think they have this god given right to be a top six club. Why ??? the treatment they gave martin jol was unforgiveable , still at least we dont have to hear the rubbish about the year ending in a one or two and they will win the FA cup, they couldnt even give the arsenal ladies a decent game , dare i mention John Bostock one of the countries exciting young prospects that Spurs enticed away from Crystal Palace, play the lad for god sake, he will at least show some commitment and passion, and dont give me the rubbish about him being a prospect for the future, what future ??? ggrrrrrr carry on whining spurs fans, you deserve all the stick you get

I've been a Spurs supporter for forty-eight years and I'm BLACK. I will always love the club. My question is, In the mid seventies when manager Terry Neill left Tottenham for Arsenal and took one of the best goalkeepers of all time,Pat jennings, did Jennings take the abuse Sol Campbell now takes? I THINK NOT.
By Danny. Posted October 9 2008 at 8:57 AM.
I think that people who make silly comments like "its just a game" and "get over it" miss the real connection that some fans feel they have with their team and top players. Players are built up to hero status, and contribute massively to the happiness / sadness of these people every week. None moreso than Sol Cambell.
Sol didn't just leave Spurs. He deliberately left the team worse off by leaving (no transfer fee so no replacement). He deliberately left for Spurs' arch rivals, and every time he played well for them he was effectively kicking sand in the face of every spurs fan who had idolised him.
Whilst Racism is entirely unacceptable, I think that these comments about "get over it" etc are wide of the mark, and the depth of feeling over the manner of his departure shouldn't be underestimated. The feelings of many spurs fans are akin to that of the boy in the playground whose girlfriend has just left him for the school bully.
By paul. Posted October 8 2008 at 12:37 PM.
any fan who chants a racist slant must be so affected by guilt because I know not of a premier side without a black dude...
Cmon, were all the same... I think much of this in the uk is more about trying to destabalise a teams key players than pure unadulterated fascist nonsense if you ask me... many of those chanting know a decent honest helpful, maybe charasmatic black guy in reality and are taken by the moment because they are not exactly university material.. know what I mean?...
Sol is a Legend!! no question.. I just dont see his colur like that.. hes a great guy who happens to be black and most of us dont think any thing less of him or similar like him for it and neither should we be... what a nasty remionder of a rascist past GB used to be... rediculous... were individuals but the hoi poly will always be weak in thought and quick to judgement in the same way they are quick to breed and rejoice in ASBOs' fools...
By Davey N. Posted October 7 2008 at 12:49 AM.
Look I understand the hurt of Racism which is based on not understanding how similar we are but based on simple grunt emotions..ie oh he looks different to me so he must be different and somewhat alien to me... none of these guys has a good black freind who has helped them, saved them, been kind to them or looked after one of thier loved ones. too bad it will take one of these moments for them to change thier minds.. this is exactly the same as the rest of society, even the police, but I do know where there is education it is almost non-existent.. I know because Im black and educated. I hope they learn before they are forced to understand... meanwhile to those more educated .. they look rediculous and foolish and lord help them.. for they know not what they do...
By Paul ds. Posted October 7 2008 at 12:40 AM.
FANS PAY A SMALL FORTUNE TO GET IN TO THE GROUNDS AND SHOULD BE FREE TO CHANT WHATEVER THEY LIKE, AS LONG AS NOTHING IS THROWN ON TO THE PITCH AND NOBODY IS HURT.
IF I WAS PAID A QUARTER OF A MILLION BIG ONES A YEAR,YOU COULD CALL MY WHATEVER YOU WANTED TO, FOR 90 MINUTES,TWICE A YEAR.
By Mick Daley. Posted October 6 2008 at 11:43 PM.
A percentage of football fans are degenerate assholes. The sport seems to attract this scumbag element. Not because of the Campbell incident. And not particularly Spurs fans. Just an element of fans in general. Next time you're at a game just sit back and take a look at them. Screaming, angry faces foaming at the mouths. Thats why i stopped going to games. Too many inbred scumbags. P.S. Everyone knows that song is a Judas reference but regardless of this some people will jump on any excuse to shout 'Racism'. The world we live in i'm afraid.
By Dix. Posted October 6 2008 at 8:01 PM.
funny that portsmouth fans sang similar songs about campbell when he played for arsenal at fratton park in 2006
"you're gay and you're mental"
i guess 2 years is a long time to remember
By george. Posted October 6 2008 at 12:40 PM.
Well done, Lord Triesan. It's about time some body like you act instead of talking. The FIFA will learn something from your action as they just make comments, and then don't act ar all. They are idiots that got paid to do nothing important.
By forguta. Posted October 5 2008 at 7:05 PM.
These comments make me laugh. People, they play a game, you watch it. It's not life and death. Don't any of you realise this?
Any player is entitled to leave any club, especially after his contract expired. Which club he goes to is his choice, not yours. Does anyone know the exact terms of the 18 million pound offer?
Get a life. If you were offered a better job with a new firm, would you consider it? Would it be acceptable to be abused for your choice?
If you think the answer is yes, then please stop watching the game and get some help. In case you hadn't realised, the game is on the pitch and not the terraces or stands
By john. Posted October 5 2008 at 6:25 PM.
yeah Jason Dighton, your great supporters. I remember you first home game after your messiah (hoddle) returned as manager. It was your lowest home crowd of the season. Maybe its the yids that are plastic and don't ever compare yourselfs the the toon army, mancs or scousers cos you really are lightweight compared to them
By Jay. Posted October 5 2008 at 3:54 PM.
Just like to say to Andy Dunn about his comments
calling spurs fans "MORONS" , if the portsmouth fans had supported their team at home as well as the spurs fans did that were actually loosing 2-0,then maybe you would not of heard the spurs fans chanting what they did, what Campbell done to us was dispicable,he had the chance to go for £18m
but lied and said he wanted to stay, then waited for
his contract to run out and joined our rivals.
People can say what they want about us spurs supporters but we sell out at the lane every game whether we are 5th in league or bottom, theres not many better fans than us,look at the so called best supporters in the league,NEWCASTLE,how many are turning up at their games at the moment!Aresnal,Man utd & Chelsea are all plastic fans!!
We will turn it around but we have got to stick
with Ramos..
By Jason Dighton. Posted October 5 2008 at 2:54 PM.
Pompey have some front, look at the 'vile' chants aimed at Redknapp when he left for Saints? Is he still twitching?
As for Hants Police, good luck to you, but be sure every single time a banned person hears a derogitry song on their tv, if they have anything about them they will make official complaints to all concerned, and once the tone has been set the FA, Clubs and local police will have no choice but to investigate.
Oh and for the record there were no racist chants aimed at campbell.
By John Smith. Posted October 5 2008 at 2:28 PM.
I would like to not comment to much on Sol but some morons that have posted comments. Firstly, to think that just because you get paid lots means you deserve to be abused is nonsense. Football is a family game and I do not wish my children to hear that sort of foul mouth behaviour, even though some imbasiles do behave that way in front of their kids. Spurs fans should grow up and move on, the days of being loyal to one club are long gone. Sol improved himself as a player by moving a step up in class when he went to Arsenal. Just because other fans do similar things does not make it right, it should be put to a stop sooner rather than later so football can move on from the common working class thugs who think they can abuse people. Who cares if its racism or not, abuse is abuse and should not be tolerated. Fun, witty banter is all good and well but not this juvenile rubbish.
By Andrew. Posted October 5 2008 at 2:14 PM.
sorry I know this probably will not get published but, Andy from Cardiff is making it up and talking a load of bully.
West Ham fans did not and would not ridicule Lampard about his mother?
I personally love the banter at football and think alot of the songs are funny. However I do not agree with discriminatory, personal, persecution. Any fans caught deserve life time bans.
Except of course those singing 10 men and a fork lift truck couldn't carry Lampard
By Rob Ellis. Posted October 5 2008 at 12:39 PM.
Too many idiots who know not what they're talking about jumping on racism band wagon. Do some research before you start flinging the racism card around. The 'hanging from a tree line' refers to Judas hanging himself after he betrayed jesus. Problem with people these days is they jump on things and look for racial conotations in everything, this song has been sung by Spurs fans for years, so why the sudden outcry about it?
I don't personally like the song and have never sung it, not because it's racist though, it's certainly not racist.
These are the same fans that applauded Jermaine Defoe off the field in the same game, what a bunch of racists they must be.
By Spurs till I die. Posted October 5 2008 at 12:26 PM.
So what now? we have to pat judas on the back and say well played? i think not! every player gets abuse from away supporters and he is no different and infact in his sittuation made a rod for his own back, as long as it's non violent or rascist then whats the prob?
By Simon. Posted October 5 2008 at 12:06 PM.
this is all out of hand..sol left tottenham for arsenal years ago and every year he has recived abuse y now take action..everyone is wanting to kick tottenham when there down. and i am a season ticket holder at spurs we sing songs every game like every other fan and now we are sick..if we get banned so should every other football supporter in the country..and racist abuse?? not one song was targeted at him because he was black this is now an excuse he would have recived the same abuse black or white he is a jedus. he deserves it, end of.
By joe yiddo. Posted October 5 2008 at 12:04 PM.
i don't know what all the fuss is about. Sol left Spurs for the other place on a free after lying to us all.
As long as the abuse isn't racist, then he deserves all the abuse he gets.
By AW. Posted October 5 2008 at 12:09 PM.
I'm an Arsenal fan and, while I like nothing better than to kick Spurs when they're down, I hate people making false accusations of racism. All clubs have their bad eggs but, I have to admit, Spurs probably has the least amount of racist fans in the country - and "that song" is not racist in any way. Disgusting, yes. But not racist. So the hypocrisy from other fans is ridiculous. People in glass houses etc. Until other clubs (and I include Arsenal and Portsmouth in this) can eradicate their racist, anti semitic or homophobic fans, we have no right to comment on Spurs.
By Jonny. Posted October 5 2008 at 11:54 AM.
As a Spurs fan all my life and an attendee at the Lane since the 1950s I am ashamed that a small body of Tottenham supporters have been behaving in this way. The continuing and ritual abuse of Sol Campbell (who last played for Spurs in 2001!) is childish and offensive. There seems to be an element at Tottenham who are overtly homophobic I remember going to an away match at Stamford Bridge some years ago when this group they jeered at a Chelsea player in an offensively homophobic way. And they are doing the same to Sol, along with all the other abuse that they think it is smart to heap on him.
I hope that the offenders are caught and that they are banned from Tottenham for life. I dont want our eminently decent club and its terrific supporters to be brought into disrepute by a bunch of idiots.
By Paddy Briggs. Posted October 5 2008 at 11:53 AM.
First of all please do not tar all spurs fans with the same brush as not all fans are abusive.
I as a spurs fan was very frustrated and dissappointed when sol left but it doesnt mean i would shout racist abuse at the man that simply is not on, and the fans that are caught doing just that should be dealt with as is gives us fans who have a love of the game and our players a really bad name.
And to all the so call spurs fans that are saying ban us and the stands will be empty quite frankly if you are the vermon taunting players home or away with racial abuse then i would rather have empty seats at a ground that can be filled with true football supporters then with thug minded morons
By kelly l. Posted October 5 2008 at 11:45 AM.
Pompey taking the high gorund don't make me laugh, their fans are amongst the worst in the country taking pride in the violent reputation they have.
As for Campbell get over it, there is always abuse to opposing teams' players, whilst it might not be very nice, it's always gone on, give me half his wages each week and I'd gladly stand in the middle of a field and let 60,000 people shout abuse at me.
The pc brigade now come out and try and put it stop to it, what do they want people in the grounds being quiet and patting other teams fans on their backs saying tally ho bloody good goal son. the atmosphere in grounds is made on things like this.
By Hmmm. Posted October 5 2008 at 11:30 AM.
Im a chelsea fan and if john terry left chelsea for arsenal he would get the loads of abuse from the fans, look at the abuse lampard gets from west ham fans, sick jibes about the death of his mother, rooney gets it from everton, ashley cole from the gunners point is you will never rid the game of banter no matter what context its spoken in.sol was their leader and captain, kissed the badge, was adored by the fans and left the club which could have got £15.000000 for him,he lied to spurs so sol has reaped this hatred upon himself and if he was white the fans would still spit words of hatred at him as would fans of any other club had sol treated them like that,at the end of the day its all about greed and money and players have no loyalty anymore.
By andy from cardiff. Posted October 5 2008 at 11:27 AM.
ndg71... thats complete and utter nonsence. There has been no let up, all hadn't been forgiven until he won the FA Cup again - the abuse is nothing to do with his success. Consider again the full set of circumsnatnces under which he left the club, the quotes in the years before and the complete lack of respect shown to the fans.
Other examples of players leaving Spurs - Jermain Defoe got a heroes reception by the Spurs fans in the same game, I (and many other Spurs fans I speak to) still have a real place in my heart for Robbie Keane and would love to see him lift the Champions League trophy with Liverpool.
There is no other figure of hate like Sol Campbell.
By LukeySpur. Posted October 5 2008 at 11:21 AM.
The following action should be taken against THFC:
1. -20 point penalty
2. Play 10 empty-stadium home games
3. Name each and every supporter invovled and have their photograph and address printed in every national newspaper.
4. Ban the supporters invovled from any sporting events worldwide. Also the supporters should be confined to the British Isles.
And finally
5. The supporters should serve a full 3 year prison sentence and be fined £50,000 each.
By the judge. Posted October 5 2008 at 11:14 AM.
"Spurs fans are vile and discgusting".."Kids will be singing these songs in the street"? Don't make me laugh... as has been pointed out several times, there are similar and worse songs that are heard all over the country and they have been for as long as i can remember (I'm 28 and started going to football matches in the mid 80's).
It's all part of what makes the British football atmosphere/banter so unique. Racism, out and out hatred, homophobia etc are out of order, but none of these songs cross that line in my opinion. Just because Sol is such a sesnitive fellow and gets all upset about them, doesn't make Spurs fans suddenly any worse than any other set of fans. And out of all those who receieve stick at football matches, he is by far and away the most deserving...
By LukeySpur. Posted October 5 2008 at 11:14 AM.
no mention of the anti-semtic abuse of bentley by pompey fans on that same day. I suppose thats fine, because we dont take offence, even naming ourselves the yids. i grew up in tottenham and the best thing about the club is our fans are of all colours and cultures who just love team. The hanging was referance to judas
By ndg71. Posted October 5 2008 at 10:56 AM.
Spurs fans should get over it. Sol left the club and has enjoyed success with Arsenal and Portsmouth. It really is the success that iritates them, Sol wasn't barracked at Pompey until they won the FA cup. It's disgusting how this inferiority complex causes them to chant racist abuse at Sol, the line about a black man hanging from a tree could have been written by the Ku Klux Klan.
By Mark. Posted October 5 2008 at 10:45 AM.
This abuse has been going on ever since Campbell

Spurs banning supporters. You need them more than

I think that the spurs fans are vile and disgusting, any player has a right to leave a club if they wish, but singing those sort of chants is something we want kicked out of football, before we know it kids will be singing these songs in the streets and i know i would not want my children picking these chants up ,spurs fans you should be ashamed of yourself

I just hope most of you hate fill people realise football is no longer a sport but a business. All of you have a job and if someone is offering you more money for your services you will leave. years gone by it was like the team in your area was your team but its not that way any more. The is a country that base it self on Human Rights so if everyone have the right to earn his money where he choose. If Sol Campbell was white he would not have recieved that treatment.
By Newton Mack. Posted October 5 2008 at 10:17 AM.
i personally have witnessed the racist ubuse by spurs fans while a black man and his kids where sitting a few feet away and it made me feel sick.To see 2 young children in that situation was very sad. These are not football fans but low life thugs who in the 1980s where all backing the national front.I hope spurs go down and i pray they never have any success while they allow these fans to remain in there ground.there is no justification for this abuse.have those idiot forgot it a GAME of football, its not important.
By jeff. Posted October 5 2008 at 10:19 AM.
You lot are priceless. I was there and there was absolutely no racism involved at all. The hanging from a tree line is a referene to Judas. i think it's hilarious that we're just told to get over it. If Eric Cantona up'd sticks and left Man U for Liverpool in his prime do you think if he was still playing 7 yrs after and returned to Old Trafford no abuse would be dished out. Get Real. Campbell knew what he was doing and knew what he would get.
By Howard Pearson. Posted October 5 2008 at 10:15 AM.

By fred yankson. Posted October 5 2008 at 9:51 AM.
there has always been chanting and barracking at football games, a bit like you get in the house of commons, but unlike the house we sing the truth. perhaps more singing should tell gordon brown and his like, leave football alone and get this country sorted out
By chris theyid. Posted October 5 2008 at 9:39 AM.
If spurs do follow through in giving life bans three quaters of the ground would be empty, sol deserves everything he gets and more ,i cant tolerate racist abuse towards him which he hasnt had ,but i can tolerate every other abuse the judas scum gets, any suppoerter take this senairio, your best player and captain tells everyone he loves you and will sign a new contract, then you find out he being lying for more than a year laughing at you behind your back and then leaves for your hated rivals for free i ask liverpool fans say that was steven gerrard and whent to man u under the same circumstances he would get slaughterd but steven gerrard has more integraty than sol scum campbell.
go on spurs ban everyone and see how much cash you loose your soon be begging us back
By paulcj. Posted October 5 2008 at 9:17 AM.
Grow up for **** sake. IT'S A GAME!!!!!! Anyone who goes along as makes vile racist and homophobic comments for 90 minutes in front on children should never be allowed in a football ground again

This is what Judas said!!!!, 'I was a Spurs fan as a boy it would be hard for me to leave...I would never join ars*nal, the fans wouldn't forgive me' Sol Campbell, May 2000.'
He obviously got that one right, it's a shame he didn't heed his own words.
By never red!. Posted October 5 2008 at 7:58 AM.
Interesting to see how so called football fans try to justify abuse as though it should be a natural part of the game. Abuse can never be justified whether it is in the home, in the playground, on the terraces or elsewhere. Only when these persons become victims of abuse are they likely to change their tune. Lose the hatred, it has no place in football. Lifetime bans should do it.
By Terry H. Posted October 5 2008 at 7:38 AM.
I'm a Toon fan and i know that we've got troubles of our own and i'd like top take some time off from them.
So, well done Spurs fans, keep on keepin on, because Campbell is a Judas and he deserves anything he gets, but keep it non violent. People will never forget.
Howay the lads.
By joseppie123. Posted October 5 2008 at 7:44 AM.
Giving a player a "bit of stick" is one thing but the reported obscene and foul mouthed comments made with children and women close by demonstrates what morons these so called fans are.
Spurs fans also seem to conveniently forget that not so many years ago (after a big protest by Spurs fans), a certain Oz goalkeeper was disciplined for a "Nazi type salute" salute at Spurs fans - even though later he stated that he was not aware that many Spurs fans are Jewish.
By Jim. Posted October 5 2008 at 7:54 AM.

By zulu. Posted October 5 2008 at 7:30 AM.
Campbell is a disgrace. So are the Police for forcing this issue. Campbell made his bed and has to lie in it. On a general level, banter and abuse go hand in hand and providing it doent spill into violence then it's wholly acceptable. Take that out of football and it wont be worth watching. It's part of the game.
Government control, keeping us all in little boxes, has now extended to our national game. Ignore nanny state. Sol, sol, wherever you may be...........
By SuperYid. Posted October 5 2008 at 6:06 AM.
I can't stand Spurs but Sol leaving them for Arsenal was the ultimate betrayal. He was entitled to commit this betrayal (and it ended up bringing him more silverware) but he cant then turn around and cry foul when Spurs fans want to have a go at him, whatever their comments were.
However bitter, objectionable and possibly even racist as those certain Spurs fans may be, they DO NOT deserve life bans from football. End of.
I sincerely hope that Sol's legal action fails
By cam. Posted October 5 2008 at 2:54 AM.
When someone as pro-Arse as Ian Wright comes out saying the Spurs fans are well within their rights to abuse Campbell and that "He knew full well he would get abuse for the rest of his career, by leaving the way he did, and to do that in going to the club you are supposed to love's arch rivals"
This infamous song has been sung for three seasons now... so why all the fuss all of a sudden?
By Bob Rodney. Posted October 5 2008 at 1:40 AM.
The witch hunt against Spurs is reaching ridiculous proportions. Opposition fans, when playing Spurs home or away, routinely sing disgusting songs about Auschwitz and Belsen and make gassing noises. Arsenal fans routinely sing homophobic songs at Ashley Cole. Man City, Leeds and Liverpool fans routinely sing songs about the Munich air disaster. Every single set of fans in the country routinely directs vile abuse at opposing fans, players and managers. The FA has never threatened any of them with banning. None of dimwit journos who are making such a fuss about the abuse directed at Campbell ever spent a whole week droning on about their chants. But this is Tottenham. They're fair game, it seems. To hell with conistency. Who gives a damn about hypocrisy? Let's have a pop, just because it's Spurs. Pathetic. And you know what? Fill yer boots, you sanctimonious bores...it'll only make us stronger.
By JimB. Posted October 5 2008 at 1:34 AM.
Football is clearly comming to and end for many true fans; the same fans who pay hugh amount of money every week to follow their beloved football team. Now; Spurs have issued an "sit down and shut up" tactic while we are rock botton of the league, play crap football and have little or no quality left in our team. I thought the Club was in a better state than the team but I was terribly wrong. Had Sol Cambpell has ome dignity and pride he would have stood up and clean withe the Spurs fans and said "sorry for leaving Spurs not telling the fans and the Club my real intentions". It's the disgusting way he left Spurs that most fans hate and it did not help of course that he went were he did either!
