The group would pay £350million to oust Ashley.
Amazingly thebillionaire could even benefit from an auction after a Nigerian consortium launched their own bid on Friday.
But the British-based South Africans are confident they are in pole position with their track record of reviving ailing global brands.
A spokesman said: "We are serious about Newcastle, we believe they are an iconic institution who deserve to be run professionally."
The five-man South African consortium has drawn up legal papers and has contacted brokers Seymour Pierce - the firm Ashley has put in charge of selling the Tyneside club.
Ashley was absent at St James' Park as his side slumped to yet another devastating defeat - 2-1 to Blackburn - their fifth in succession.
And now it could be just weeks before he and the rest of Newcastle's hapless hierarchy is gone for good.

Everytime the going gets tough Kevin Keegan is up and off, if he comes back to Newcastle whats to say he won't go again if he cannot have his own way. Dennis Wise and co should never have been brought to Geordie land that is one of the biggest mistakes Mike Ashley made. Some of the misfortune experienced by NUFC must be attributed to the players the fans have been loyal to them so why don't they get their fingers out and play like we all know they can

It's high time the players stood up to be counted, remember this is largely the same crew who were nearly relegated last season. None of them seem to want the ball on the pitch, and do not seem to be prepared to put the work in for ninety minutes. The present situation is heaven sent for them to blame for poor performances. They seemed to be a bit miffed because a so called top manager didn't come. Did they not realise the so called 'Top Managers' didn't want the job. I hope Joe Kinnear gets the jumping through hoops, and gets Vinnie Jones to give him a hand. That might waken them up a bit.
I have been a black and white for 60 years, and this is the worst team I have seen.

I just don't understand how the sale of newcastle to a group of buisnessmen who are not known for their richness would do to Newcastle. Keegan wanted more cash and the backing was not there and players were up for sale without his knowledge. But I would like to question whether these prospectivve new owners would have a bigger transfer kitty than Mike Ashley. And wat happens when there is a feud between them.
If they had been taken over by say a multibillionaire it would have been a move forward, but how is this a move forward??

the team should stand up and be counted they should be told the fans pay a big part of thier wages so lets see them produceing results for the fans they should start playing football leave the trouble what is happening with ashley and co in the dressing room show ashley/co that the team is stronger than they are so come toon play up for your devoted fans lets try and make some good come out of this fiasco!!!!!

i dont know why newcastle fans hate mike ashley so much , as far as i can see he has done no wrong, but all i would like to know is why oh why do newcastle want kevin keegan back as manager, can someone please tell me what he has ever won in probably over 10 years as being a manager at 3 or more clubs, yes he may have been a great player but that doesnt make you a great manager or you may as well get gazza in charge!!!!

I'm a Geordie living in California.
Born at Leazes Crescent I would be taken as a kid to watch the Magpies. Names that ring bells are Jimmy Schooler (?) and Len White but it was a long time ago. I can still hear the chants of " peanuts tanner a bag " and remember my dad lifting me up and passing me to a complete stranger who passed me over head line by line until I reached the front where I had a chance to see some of the match.
Happy days and now I watch the lads on Fox sports and the excitement immediately returns. I feel so sorry for the fans and hope this mess can be sorted soon. They deserve better.

if the consortium does buy the toon they should not give k k the managers job as he has spit the dummy out if he does not get his own way or the going gets tough bring in a manager who will who is not afraid to take the good and bad when results go against us not like k k who runs a mile

'instead we get Xisco who is rubbish frankly, as is Coloccini. Guthrie is average and Jonas who is injured! Ashley also went behind the back of a man HE hired when things were going ok too. Ashley is also stupid asking for a bigger price for us as we're worse than when he bought us (Smaller squad, no manager).'
You see this is why Newcastle fans are a laughing stock. They all seem to think they know best, when the reality is they ain't got a clue. Xisco is a promising young striker who scored goals in a very poor Depor side, and you're writing him off after, what four games? When he hasn't even played in his natural position in some of them. It's not like he's even been poor, in comparison with Butt, Ameobi, Duff etc. Coloccini is an Argentina international, I hope you're joking there. Of couse he's going to look a little dodgy playing alongside Steven Taylor and Habib Beye, he ain't superman. Anyway, what do I care I've backed you to go down at all rates from 25/1 down to 10/1. Happy days. Get back where you belong and the 10K crowds you had pre-keegan in division 2.

Sick of hearing about Ashley and his billions. Why is it that all other club fans throw in their ten penneth, usually poisonous, towards the Toon? When the chosen one left the rent boys, all the media focus was on the Toon, after Bobby left us.
We don't claim to be a massive club, or to have the best supporters. ). They wind people up, so don't ring their radio stations.
We don't expect to win anything, but what's wrong with wanting your team to do well and i don't mind defeat, as long as we are playing well. Not like now, where we just give up and let whatever opposition win every game, without trying ourselves.
Keep the faith.

Ashley did have good intentions. He wanted to let his board run the club which was ok with Chris Mort in charge. Mort could link Keegan with the board. Mort also got out with the fans doing after dinner speaking etc. However Ashleys appointments of Wise and Jiminez let him down. His mistake was not doing something about that. If he had got a board that could work with the manager it may have worked out.

Technically, Newcastle are still in debt, Ashley just got it own to an acceptable level. Nah, we're all mad at Ashley as he's broke promises over signings. We've known since January that we needed more players to our squad and MA broke his promise regarding transfer funds. Instead of the money we were promised he sells Milner behind our backs then tries to offload players without the managers knowledge while at the same time promisin "Wow" signings which never happened - instead we get Xisco who is rubbish frankly, as is Coloccini. Guthrie is average and Jonas who is injured! Ashley also went behind the back of a man HE hired when things were going ok too. Ashley is also stupid asking for a bigger price for us as we're worse than when he bought us (Smaller squad, no manager).

We need to look at the facts here ! Ashley takes over and states " you cant take it with you " ie he intends to spend big - he knew the debt, surely a billionaire completes full investigation of a company before buying it. The fans have hope and he then removes Sam and brings in KK, all remaining season tickets are sold - looking good ! Wise appointed, KK is undermined, no money spent on better players, Ashley wants players he can sell at a profit. Rot sets in, KK has to leave, Asley wants £481 ! PROFIT!
This man knew what he was doing from the very start, otherwise he would have sacked Wise and backed KK

ere man... dodgey roger.. the toon have got debt still... yeh the man Ashley paid 130M for club then cleared 70M of *THE*debt then apparently paid 50M in transfers.. but that wasnt taking in account of fees recouped... He tried to play footy boss on his amiga when a kid and thought i can do that. but alas you need more than a few quid to beable to do it.. my personal feelings about this is he has messed up big time.. the deluded ones that who told him to bring keegan back have had a big effect on this demise. keegan showed he doesnt have a clue about new talent last time by getting rid of our youth and reserves we lost players of future status because of that.. auld Sir bobby was trying to reinstate that flaw with his signings before shepheard sacked him*fool* We need the club sorted and a tactically aware manaer installed before we*the proud geordie nation* can look forward and take some pride in the club again instead of been constantly ridiculed in papers and on likes of Sky sports..
**Black n White till we Die** toon toon...black n white army....

The so called Geordies don't understand how many Millions Mr Ashley has actually spent! He had good intentions that went wrong! Give the geezer a break!
By Boshboy. Posted September 28 2008 at 11:29 AM.
ashley has been foolish but the newcastle fans have made him a villain when he basically bailed them out of debt!
By jonas. Posted September 28 2008 at 10:57 AM.
Thank God..this guy ASHLEY has ruined NUFC his lack lustre arogance and pathetic attempts in football have made I am sure everyone including the regulating authorites sit up and realise plonkers like Ashley.Wise ,Jimenez and Llambias should never go near another football club..GET OUT AND STAY OUT..

Nationalise the Toon!
Gordon Brown could bring back Fat (keep the fridge topped up pet) Freddy, to oversee the Bank of Englands investment?
A prospective board of Dennis, Oz, Barry, Neville, Moxy and Wayne.
Sounds a much better investment for the U.K. Taxpayer than the Bradford & Bingley?
At least we'd be in with a fighting chance of getting our money back!
Awee the lads.
By Buzz. Posted September 28 2008 at 10:37 AM.
They have no debt because Ashley bailed them out. FFS cost them a small fortune with the obscene contracts he handed out to Big Sam and all his hangers-on. Not to mention the disastrous transfer deals. His 'parting gift' if you like. And yet some deluded geordies prefer him to Ashley who saved the club from bankrupcy and whose 'cockney mafia' have invested in proven South American/Spanish talent with re-sale value. You couldn't make it up.
By roger, london. Posted September 28 2008 at 10:42 AM.
To all potential buyers please do not buy this club for more than 200 million, do not give that guy the satisfaction of making a great profit after destroying the club. He will take the offer

The sooner we can draw a big fat line under MA's reign the better for all parties concerned! Obviously he does not have a clue how to run a football club. I hope these potential owners use this as a case example on how not to operate and run NUFC with a proper sound strategy. The key thing is to communicate to the fans! Are u listening Ashley!

You can say what you like about mike ashley but he stands to make quite a bit of money from the sale of newcastle, no wonder he is a billionaire.
By richard hawks. Posted September 28 2008 at 7:25 AM.
Throwing good money after bad. The price tag Mike Ashley is after is ridiculous.
They have no great value in the players..loads of debt and no one wants the job....But since when has anything been sensible in the Premier League?
