Boss Martin O'Neill met the Swede last week and is scheduled to have talks with the Swede over the next 48 hours.
The Villa manager expects to complete the deal before Villa's game against Bolton on Saturday.
Larsson will be immediately available to play for Villa because his contract with Helsingborgs has expired and he has no intention of re-signing for them before the Swedish season starts again in March.
O'Neill believes the striker can provide a short term solution to Villa's goal scoring crisis - even though he is now 37.
Larsson enjoyed one of the best spells of his career under O'Neill at Celtic and proved his worth in the Premier League when he spent a spell on loan at Manchester United in 2007.
He has retained a high level of fitness and made a surprise international comeback for Sweden during the 2008 finals.

well done villa, but now we need some consistency to keep us there. if we beat arsenal on boxing day I dont see why we cant go all the way.

While it may be too early to be waxing lyrical about Villa's chances of sealing a 4th or even 3rd place, no one can deny the verve with which this team plays.
Yeah, keeping Agbonlahor and Ashley Young fit might be the key, but hey, we're enjoying our run!!!
GO VILLA!!!

Hansen and Lawrenson eat your hearts out. Technically we are top of the Prem as we have done it the traditional way - with good British management, mainly English players and spending little but wisely.

Good win and will be interesting to see who we get in the January transfer. The right buys could see us get that 4th spot or even above liverpool who i think will eventually finish third or 4th.
Hope we don't get Heskey, Crouch.
Would like to see Valencia, Roque, Steven Defour . These 3 signings would guarantee champions league football for next season.
