ALAN SHEARER is favourite to take over as Sheffield United boss if Kevin Blackwell is sacked.

The Bramall Lane chief is on the brink of losing his job after a dramatic slump that has left the club floundering way off the play-off spots.

Blades fans have turned on Blackwell in recent weeks despite yesterday's 1-0 win over bottom side Peterborough.

The United bosses are desperate for a return to the Premier League and Shearer has growing support.

They believe he would be the talisman to breath life into a campaign that is in serious danger of being blown out before December.

They would back him in the January transfer window.

For his part, Shearer is keen to return to management after his brief spell in charge at Newcastle last season.

Then Shearer was unable to keep the Toon up and waited all summer for the call to return to take over at St James' Park in a permanent position.

But owner Mike Ashley snubbed the 39-year-old and last month handed Chris Hughton the role on a permanent position until 2011.

That has hardened Shearer's resolve to return and he wants an ambitious club with Premier League aspirations.

"He's desperate to get back in," said a source close to the former England captain. "He waited for Newcastle and it didn't happen.

"Now he wants another club. He has the hunger and he is just waiting for the right club with the right ambition."

Sheffield United have given a signal of their intentions by appointing former Chelsea chief executive Trevor Birch and have ambitious off-field plans to rejuvenate the club.

Shearer still has his television work with the BBC but I understand corporation bosses have been told of his intentions and would not stand in his way.

shearer is a legend in english football. the situation of sheffield utd is to bad. it does'nt depand to the coach to turn things round, it depands on many things and luck. my team, leeds utd, have been in that situation. it went really bad. nowdays things have changed and we are smiling again. so good luck to shearer. football is like that, but i'am sure alan will give his best.

Do me a favour, Shearer took Newcastle down. His messiah status is a bit cloudy to say the least. His record as Newcastle manager was appalling, wake up folks! It is all well and good to attract big name signings to a club, however this might not help when you have the tactical mind of an ant.

Shearer would be a great signing as manager. Blackwell has taken us as far as he can and its time for a change. Yes hes had injury problems but you can see that the players do not want to play under him. Sharp is a prime example. great player rejuvnated at doncaster who actually put the ball on the ground. Shearer can do that and also attract top players to the club. If not shearer either Darren Ferguson or Gary Speed should step up and get us playing football again

Got a repeat of the Bryan Robson catastrophe written all over it.

great players never make great managers i have been a leeds fan since 1966 so i should know

ps money does help though

I agree jamie the geordie that Shearer would attract better/bigger players than Blackwell has managed to achieve.

Whilst Blackwell might have 'some' good points, sadly his history of Luton and Leeds just go to show that he has never made the contacts that Shearer has in his long illustrious career. This is reflected in the poor quality of the squad at Bramall Lane.

I feel that Blackwell has taken us as far as he can.

Give Shearer a contract till the end of the season by which time we'll see if he's the man for the job.

Although the appointment of Trevor Birch is a step forward, transfer funds should have been made available pre season not half way through when things are not going as the board would like.A squad consisting of mainly loan players will not get a team promotion and does not signal the start of a rebuilding proceedure which the board said would go ahead to meet their Premier League aspirations.

shearer was too good for newcastle

Some rather backward comments here. Being a Geordie who lives near Bramall Lane, Shearer would be a massive boost for a club that ought to be doing a lot better.

I think what the other people here are missing is that he would add pulling power to the club for potential transfer targets and how anybody can base his managerial credentials on the last 8 games of last season is ridiculous.

If people really knew their stuff they would know that when he was assistant manager under Roeder for half a season we finished 7th in the Prem, and when he left Roeder was clueless and got the sack.

I know plenty of Blades fans who are very excited at the prospect of a world reknowned name coming to the club!

let them, have shearer the toon dnt want him over paid over rated thinks he is mr newcastle he will never amount to anything in managment you watch

Shearer...... Great player, but that doesn't make him a great manager. Blackwell has no money, a squad concisting of loan players and laterly, no support from the fans. Nobody could do a better job with such limited resource. Let Shearer stick to TV and let's get behind Blackwell. Blades fans, what Blades fans, those who are infavour of sacking Blackwell should be ashamed of themselves. Macabe is the problem, not Blackwell.

Shearer is a good pundit but not a good manager. Blackwell can't be blamed, he has had almost the full team out with injuries. What a load of rubbish.

There has been a mass exodus at Bramall Lane since the parachute payments dried up. We have the smallest squad in the Championship and half of the players in that squad are on loan. If that's an interesting prospect to Shearer then good luck to him but he won't do any better than Blackwell.
