JAMES TREDWELL was hardly a hit with the missus when he was handed a shock England call-up.

The uncapped Kent off-spinner was brought into the one-day squad on Wednesday as cover for injury victims Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad.

But Tredwell admitted his new wife has mixed feelings because she will be stuck at home with the DIY!

Tredwell, 27, married long-term partner Beth last month and he explained: "The wedding was a big thing and Beth is a nurse so she is pretty hectic with work at the minute.

"We're also getting a bit of DIY work done at home so the place is a shambles right now and I've got out of the way!

"She's delighted I got the call of course so she's probably a bit happy and also sad that I've ducked off."

Tredwell got the nod ahead of out-of-favour spinner Monty Panesar. But he admitted he nearly had to say No when Three Lions coach Andy Flower phoned him.

He added: "I got the call from England on Wednesday at 1pm and then I was on the plane at 8pm that evening.

"By the time I got home I had 45 minutes to pack so I chucked it all in. Whether I got it all I don't know yet!"

Tredwell's selection ahead of Monty Panesar leaves the Sikh of Tweak fighting for his international future just after joining Sussex from Northamptonshire last week.

It is a savage blow to Panesar, 27, who had stationed himself in South Africa with the Highveld Lions in the hope of receiving an injury call-up.

Tredwell admitted: "Maybe it was a bit of a surprise to get the nod ahead of Monty. But I like to think that I've had a good season so it is nice to get the nod as a like-for-like bowler."

England received a boost yesterday when James Anderson announced his return to fitness after Friday's washed-out one-day series opener.

The Lancashire pace bowler has recovered from a niggling knee injury and is expected to feature at Centurion today.

Anderson said: "I trained well today and had a good bowl in both the nets and out in the middle.

"I did all the fielding and I feel fine so I'm reasonably hopeful of playing. I'm pretty much there."

Paul Collingwood will overtake Alec Stewart as England's most capped player when he wins his 171st cap today.

MIDDLESEX are expected to announce Makhaya Ntini as their overseas player for next season after Adam Gilchrist signed up last week for the domestic Twenty20 competition.
