The Scot wants to end his year on a high by winning the year-ending event, having already clinched six titles in 2009.
Several former British players have attacked Murray's "passive playing style", but the Scot insists he has no intention of changing.
He said: "They're always entitled to their opinionbut I work really, really hard with the guys I am coached by to come up with the right gameplan.
"Some people seem to think I'm not tactically astute but you can't get to No 2 in the world if you're one-dimensional.
"If I went out this week and played very aggressively, serve and volley, and lost all three of my matches people would say ask me what I was doing. You can't win in that situation.
"I just play my own game. I enjoy the way that I play tennis. If I don't win a big event or whatever it is I need to do to prove that I'm a good player then I'll still have enjoyed the way I play.
"It's different to a lot of the other players and I like it."
World No 4 Murray begins his campaign today against US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro. The left wrist injury that kept Murray off the tour for six weeks has cleared up completely and the 22-year-old will fancy his chances of winning the title, having won eight of his 13 ATP Tour events on similar indoor courts.
The only thing lacking from Murray's record is a grand- slam title but he insisted that he was on the right track.
He added: "I'm trying my best and I'm working as hard as I can to do it. It hasn't happened yet but I hope that it does. And if it doesn't, that's too bad.
"It's not through lack of trying. If I don't do it, I won't be good enough to do it.
"I think I'll win one, maybe more than one. And we've just got to wait and see.
"I'll have a lot more opportunities. I was very, very close at Wimbledon this year."
To win the title in London, Murray may well have to beat Federer twice - but Murray has won six of their nine meetings.
"I understand that to win against him, you have to play great but I have to play my way," he said.
"If I try and play the way that Federer plays, or change my style to suit what he likes then I'm not going to feel comfortable on the court. I'm going to struggle.
"So I just try to play my best tennis in the way that I think is best - and it's worked against him before."
