BIRMINGHAM City boss Alex McLeish has stepped up his interest in Celtic's £7million-rated winger Aiden McGeady.

McLeish, who has up to £40m to spend in the January transfer window, travelled to Dublin to run the rule over McGeady in the Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off against France.

McGeady, 23, is high on a Birmingham hit-list that includes targets from all over Europe.

McLeish, who admits Birmingham need more options, said: "I still think we are bit thin in the wide areas and up front."

McLeish has also had his scouts out this weekend watching the Bosnian international strikers Ednin Dzeko and Vedad Ibisevic and the Serbian forwards Milan Jovanovic and Nikola Zigic.

Dzeko plays for Wolfsburg, Ibisevic is with Hoffenheim, Jovanevic plays for Standard Liege with Zigic playing in Spain for Valencia.

McLeish knows he will have to pay out a huge fee to land one of them but spending the money of new owner Carson Yeung holds no fears for him.

He said: "If I was to say to Carson that I would like to spend £10m on a top, top striker then we have got to convince everybody that is the right man.

"I will try and be as careful with the money as I can, but I know we are trying to bring in another level of player so maybe we are going to have to spend a little bit more in terms of the overall package.

"If we have got Premier League ambitions then we need to bring in the quality."

The most over-rated player in the SPL. Celtic have better players who don't get a game because of this wannabe-victim.

£7m? About £5.5m too much. Bite their hand off. Niall and Paddy are better.

THis guy has no loyalty, he will go.

If I was in Mcgeadys shoes I would move to Birmingham. The Scottish game is dead with few quality players playing for the Old Firm the games now are boring to watch. I dont believe he will be a success as to me he is just average but the money he will get should motivate him to make the move. Cheers Jimmy.
