BARCELONA PLAN £85M BID FOR ROONEY

United striker holds key to Nou Camp deal

BARCELONA want to make Wayne Rooney the world's most expensive footballer.

The Spanish and European champions are lining up an incredible £85million summer swoop for the Manchester United striker.

The Nou Camp club have identified the 24-year-old as the star of the next World Cup and have already put plans in motion to trump Real Madrid's capture of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Catalan giants believe United's massive debts mean they're under increasing pressure to consider bids for all their top players.

United's failure to pump the funds from Ronaldo's £80m sale back into the squad has provided a reminder the Old Trafford's club's finances are in a mess.

But as in the case of Ronaldo, Rooney himself will hold the key to any successful bid from the Nou Camp.

The Scouser has never expressed a desire to move abroad and with wife Coleen just having given birth to their first child, Barca's bid will give him a huge dilemma.

United had no choice but to surrender to Ronaldo's desire to go to the Bernabeu, but Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping Rooney is less inclined to leave.

The England forward is now seen as the focal point of the United team and Fergie would fight even harder to keep Rooney than he did Ronaldo.

Rooney suggested this week he wanted to stay at Old Trafford for life.

However, the prospect of joining up with the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta under manager Pep Guardiola is sure to be tempting.

nah man
100.millon 4 rooney he is world class player

By big MO. Posted November 10 2009 at 12:11 PM.

What is wrong with spanish clubs they must learn to develop talent than always rounding up all world stars. As for my club Man u I urge them to improve their balance sheet in particular the liquidity ratio to avoid failling into temptations. what should be noted is that as fans we develop emotional connections with players leading to cemented love for the club and continued selling of star players is betrayal of royalty by club owners. The glazers must watch out we the fans are more important than them. Please NEVER SALE ROONEY

By Nalucha Mayamba. Posted November 10 2009 at 6:33 AM.

i think barcelona are stupid

they are just bidding for rooney to show real madrid that they are bigger and richer than them they are not going to buy rooney because he is good but that he is going to be £5m larger than real madrid's offer

plus rooney is a loyal player any player like him will not give a monkeys about money

By KaMmY dA dOn. Posted November 9 2009 at 9:06 PM.

everybody that is speaking against ROONEY is just biased.because if he was in your club you will be the happiest person on this planet. The best striker from his homeland, the best striker from one of the best league in the world.one of the best players of the 21st CENTURY.that boy is a classic player that the hole England and some part of the world respects.wizza you own my love and respect as a footballer.
always stick 2 the truth...

By ONYENEWUZI. Posted November 9 2009 at 8:52 PM.

If this is true... Fergie will definitely not say no. But who wants Rooney on Barca? Ibra n Messi are at a much higher level.

By jurbina15. Posted November 9 2009 at 5:37 PM.

lets close down the club if we are selling them..

By Abdo. Posted November 9 2009 at 5:06 PM.

Keep dreaming, Rooney is not going anywhere period. He is definitely one of the best strikers in the world right up there with Torres but Fergie will never let him leave , Rooney is the most hardworking player in the premier league.

By Andre. Posted November 9 2009 at 4:00 PM.

Hell no he won't go.

If 'Mr. Dive' is so say worth £80 mil even when he spends most of the match on the floor then they'd be gettin a bargain with 'give it 110% Roon' but he won't go anywhere as he's all about heart and old trafford (with r Fergy) is the best place for him to be. Everyone keeps chattin about 'always a blue' and what? He was a young and dedicated fan (which he still is) who had to grow up and think about his career. Did he make the right decision? Think the proof is in the pudding.

Anyone who doesn't agree should get off them whites and b's.

Barcelona........ bovvered

By Jacobo Torres. Posted November 9 2009 at 12:46 PM.

hahahaha Rooney worth 85 Million??? Always the case with the media hyping up English strikers who are not very good. What next? Real Madrid want to buy Emile Hesky?

By shamim. Posted November 9 2009 at 11:07 AM.

there is ni coach in this world who will not be happy getiing rooney, because he is the best,he gives all in a match....i think barca are dreaming, even if they add messi to the 85m ,it is not enough to buy rooney...and haters should burn the sea if they care...Mubarik(GHANA)

By Mbarik. Posted November 9 2009 at 11:06 AM.

Pls don’t forget, its an assertion. England likes this kind of joke. The R guy in question knows he never worth the amount likewise anybody. Pep Guardiola & co will dramatically appear crazy if they dare that. Instead get Etoo back if you wish a change.

By kenn. Posted November 9 2009 at 8:44 AM.

To those who think that roo not worth 80 millions, u are right. He's not even worth 100 millions koz he,s just invaluable. All those saying he's not worth it are sure to want him play for their team. Look for the manager who does not want roo to play for them.

By Mikhal. Posted November 9 2009 at 8:34 AM.

Rooney aint gonna leave old trafford for any million. Barca can keep their money, United aint hungry like Arsenal.

By Adeshina Arthur. Posted November 9 2009 at 8:06 AM.

If anyone think_rooney will go to barca_so flush your mind_

two reason rooney will stay at man utd_i think so_

if rooney does go to barca_so he will gonna play on the left_and there will be robinho on the left_so rooney may not be a regular in a barca team_

and the second reason is_that rooney favourite position is the centre forward_and barca already have ibrahimovic there_so rooney will not gonna join barca to play wide_

and there are so many reason_rooney will stay at man utd_

By imran. Posted November 9 2009 at 7:11 AM.

why r ppl even discussin this, rooney isnt goin anywhere he's only just said that he wants to do wot giggs is goin to do and finish his career with united. Now im not sayin he will but im sure he'll be there for a few years yet. Plus rooney is one of the hardest workin player of any team in any country so i rekon he?s worth every penny of that 85 mil but that doesnt matter cuz he's not goin anywhere he?s already with the most successful team since the premiership started and its the best league in the world. HE'S GOIN NOWHERE!

By geezernumba1. Posted November 9 2009 at 4:20 AM.

No way rooney is goin 2 that poor league m a chelsea fan buh i would nt like 2 c all the good playersfrom england go 2 that poor poor league the league makes u sleep thats no where near premier league i h8 2 c all good players from here goin 2 that sick league .

By brazil.chelsea4life. Posted November 9 2009 at 2:49 AM.

What a joke, Barca is great team, they got top class players, not thugs. And then £85m for a thug no goal in october at all. No way anybody want Rooney. He is not a player. They got Messi and new boy Pedro. Great team player with goals and no red card every month. How barca gonna pay for a"goal drought" that much

Rooney is the worst player in the league. FACT. All he does is moan at the refs and take on ridiculous long shots. FACT. He is not worth the stubble on Xavi's upper lip neve rmind 85 million. FACT. He can't even use his head. FACT.

By Peter Johnstone. Posted November 8 2009 at 11:09 PM.

All those who say rooney is overated, rates players on how many stepovers they can do. Wake up idiots, dribbling is not all football is about. Rooney is the complete footballer, can play just about anywhere on the field(Defence included). This coming from a liverpool suppoter.

well!!!! i dont think rooney's going anywhere... he's a red devil ...

By Abhishek MAn Shrestha. Posted November 8 2009 at 6:37 PM.

In spite of being a United fan I think Rooney is not worth 85 million, he is only worth a quarter of this amount and i think he won't bring any quality to Barcelona's team. I think it is time the English press stop hyping the English players. A dose of reality is what is required before the world cup.

By sajjad. Posted November 8 2009 at 6:32 PM.

IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. ENOUGH SAID ALREADY...

By IESTYN. Posted November 8 2009 at 6:31 PM.

The problem with Rooney is that he has a temper and he either reigns himself in too much and his performance drops or he goes close to the limit and gets in trouble. A yellow card only adds to his problem as he has to back off more. Although not team sportsmen, the likes of Tiger Woods and Michael Schumacher could maintain 100% without straying into 101% and losing control. I knew after he stamped on Carvalho in the world cup that not only does he do nothing for the team when he's sent off the field but that this issue added a factor to his game that the vast majority of players don't carry onto the pitch with them. They know they have control of themselves and this is something that Rooney has to consciously work at when he's out there when he should be able to focus on the game. If he went thorough a season at 100% he could be deadly and break records because he has the skill but he lacks in the mental department which underpins everything.

By John D. Posted November 8 2009 at 6:06 PM.

85 Million for Rooney??!!!

If Rooney worths 85, Ronaldo worths at least 200 Million.

The first time for a long time that Toffees will be happy to hear his name. Everton get a big chunk (25% I think) of any sell on fee. Best get to Benidorm fat boy!!

By iab. Posted November 8 2009 at 3:22 PM.

Supporters, what makes a player fantastic? The all round performance or the changing of the match complexion? I for one think that a good player is always sought by big clubs. How many clubs to date tried to buy rooney?

there are players that are better than rooney who are not over rated. And you see, some players are media players like Bekham is. He is not very good.

Compare rooney to Drogba? Who is better. Whatever criteria I would choose Drogba because he is technically superb.

By Misheck Table. Posted November 8 2009 at 1:59 PM.

amazing player, would exell at barca but he's going absolutley nowhere, no reason to sell him and no reason for him to go, if anyone's jealous of him, or united, then call him fat or overrated, we,ve never heard that before, you;re really witty and funny! fact is you'd love him at your club no matter who you are

By poopsooka. Posted November 8 2009 at 1:10 PM.

Chris... Are you really comparing Le Tallec to Ronaldo???? Seriously??

Wow. Now I have heard it all.

One is arguably the best player on the planet. The other is a nobody who will sure to remain that way.

By baboucarr jallow. Posted November 8 2009 at 12:47 PM.

judging by the insulting comments above you can tell why Britain is loosing out in the world ratings. Not only in football but the world in general.Your failure to support true British talent is why football teams over hear are full of foreign players, who find it easy to leave this country, simply because of money.Your filthy attitude to Wayne Rooney is nothing short of bullying and hurtful to his family.Think about the constant filth directed @ Beckham and look how rich his is now.Why are you British so jealous of your own? This is why England will fail in the world cup again!!!

By brian. Posted November 8 2009 at 12:22 PM.

Half of you are mad and half of you are exaggerating. Rooney worth 300 million? Are you insane, no one's worth that much and, as good as he can be, how much would that make Messi? 500, 600? Get real. Rooney is better than some of you are making out though and he'd probably fit in pretty well at Barca, with his play making as much as anything. But is he going? Don't be daft, if this story is even true, which is debateable, then it's probably just to remind some Barca players not to rest on their already amazing reputation with important games coming up.

Rooney’s an awesome player, who’s going to stay with a team who are only going to fail this season. With him as literally their only ‘superstar’ and the likes of Nani and Valencia, ha, what are they going to win? Precisely.

By Adam.. Posted November 8 2009 at 12:20 PM.

if united should cash in on anybody its rio, hes 31 & if we made him available barca & madrid would battle for him! we have evans who can replace him & of kjacar has a 6mil buyout clause then thats a bargain & could be another vidic in the making

By kevin. Posted November 8 2009 at 12:17 PM.

Im an arsenal fan and no im not keen on rooney, but for some jumped up pratt (who is asking anyone if they know about football) then that just causes me to have a chuckle!!! Rooney over rated??? Abseloutly not!!!! He's the only thing united have at the moment....he's they're engine, he's power and the way he reads the english game, theres no other player on the world stage let alone the european stage that can do rooneys job! FACT!!! So i suggest you have a re-think!!!

By Neil. Posted November 8 2009 at 12:05 PM.

By Robert Whyte. Posted November 8 2009 at 11:45 AM.

In most cases, paying £12m for a teenager would be considered rank stupidity, over-indulgence or, at the very least, a gamble which even Chris Kirkland's dad would shy away from.

When Manchester United do it, it's a stroke of transfer genius.
According to everyone who they make listen, United have just signed the best teenager in the world. By God are we hearing about it.

I'm not doubting Ronaldo's abilities. Clearly he's a talented kid who may be on the threshold of greatness. It just strikes me as rather odd that no-one has given the same attention to Liverpool's equally stunning new teenage recruit.

It seems Gerard Houllier's mistake with Anthony Le Tallec was to buy him early rather than delay until everyone in Europe wanted him. Obviously, Liverpool should have waited until Le Tallec's value was £12m.

Soon enough, the rest of the nation will wake up to the fact Le Tallec and Ronaldo played in the same world youth championships not so long ago and it was the Liverpool new boy who was voted the best player.

No doubt both Gerard and Mr Ferguson watched those same youth championships in Malaysia a few years back and noticed the same players.

Indeed, Liverpool had already signed Le Tallec by then and were strongly linked with Ronaldo themselves, but can't afford to splash out like United.

Time will tell who's got the better deal, but for value for money I know who I'm backing. It's a bit like Houllier and Ferguson have both dined at the same top class restaurant and had their pick of the best main courses on the menu.

Houllier has managed to get his dish at a quarter of the cost Ferguson has paid, and yet it's his rival who is getting all the praise.

Indeed, I'm getting an eerie sense of deja vu when it comes to theman dubbed TLT who's about to explode onto the Premier League. I remember how slow our London based number one writers were to realise who Steven Gerrard was a few years back.

The Kop Magazine I once wrote even launched a campaign to get him in the England squad, so little attention was he receiving. Then, when the rest of the country noticed a year later, they decided to make him their own property.

It was a similar story with Wayne Rooney at Everton. A friend of mine who works on a national newspaper tried to get a feature on Rooney into his paper in the summer of 2002. They were having none of it. How times changed three months later when "Rooney Opens Crisp Packet" stories were making the front page.

Le Tallec won't get the same attention as Rooney, Gerrard or Michael Owen because he ain't English. But the few glimpses I've had of him remind me so much of the first time I saw Gerrard.

So young, yet so full of class. So clearly ready to play at the highest level and begin the learning curve which will take him to the top of the game.

One of the most encouraging, but sadly overlooked parts of Sunday was Le Tallec's being named a sub. Pity he didn't get on, although Houllier said he was prepared to play the youngster if the circumstances of the game had been different.

The career paths of Le Tallec and Ronaldo are sure to cross regularly over the next decade. Should the French gem prove himself the better player, you never know, maybe the manager who signed him will get a bit of credit.

Footballfan...do you know anything about football? ManU cannot afford to buy back Ronaldo "if things do not work out at Madrid" the buy out clause is set at hundreds of millions!!! Perez is not stupid! Besides the guy is loving life out there. Shrek is waay to overated and spends more than 30mins moaning everygame and is not worth more than 30mil, and some ManU fans 300mil get a life then how much is Torres worth who is without a doubt the best striker in the League maybe the world?

By Gabby. Posted November 8 2009 at 11:22 AM.

That is the price for ronney but to tell you the truth he will not go because he wants to win the F.A cup and 2 more champions league

as a barca fan i would rather robinho, aguerro or luis fabiano at the camp nou, they would bring more quality than rooney and assis ibrahimovic beta.United showed what they are without ronaldo 3rd in the prem at best and rooney is playing average.get Robinho for half the money and have the best squad, manager and stadium in the world.

Wayne is north west. He lives in a multi-million pound gaff thirty minutes from scouseland, and plays for the biggest club in the world. He is also a ginger, and the scorching heat of the Catalan sun would definitely be a turn off. And his missus wouldn't let him go anyway. Whilst I'm here, could I just ask if anyone needs any odd jobs doing, for the odd bob, like, I'm yer man.... Thanks for that now.

By Odd Job Bob-A-Job Bob (He does the odd job for the odd bob). Posted November 8 2009 at 11:05 AM.

Rooney will remain at United regardless of the so called interest from Barcelona - even at a reputed £85M!
What guarantee would Rooney have of playing week in and week out at Barca - he would just be one of many top players and could you see him displacing Messi, Kaka or Xavi?
As for Ronaldo, remember he was born in Madeira, so he was not British like Rooney, so returning to mainland Europe is much closer to home, especially so to Real Madrid.
Let the rumours about United debts keep on circulating but has anyone heard the Glazers say they will sell any of United's players?
Unless/until you all do and applies to journalists and fans alike, Rooney and all the other United players will remain at Old Trafford - just like Sir Alex will, until HE decides to retire!

By MancMalc. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:58 AM.

The spelling, style and grammar of the comments on this page tell us something more important than Rooney's future, they tell us that the UK has the literacy of a five-year-old.

By John. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:57 AM.

To be fair any one with any sense wouldnt listen to the halfwit that wrote this. He has no sources, and is the same ignorant pro liverpool anti utd fool that wrote a ridiculous article that le tallac was a better singing and would become a better player than Ronaldo, and we all know how THAT turned out. Rooney will not leave Utd, and definately wont leave england. End of.

By Gaz. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:56 AM.

I like the comments about rooney being a true red devil - Just like he was a true Toffees fan and player.. then moved to united

If this is true he willl probably move for the money if it is better

By Jezzer. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:46 AM.

What a load of muppits if you think they would offer £80m for Rooney....

Rooney wouldnt fit in at Barcelona, it would be like the Clampets rolling up to take residence at Buckingam Palace..........................

By Yashin. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:41 AM.

Huge mistake for Wazza to leave Utd. He cannot handle the warmer climates of spain. He is far too pasty and short tempered for that. Look at his previous games in hot countries?

By Chris Mac. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:33 AM.

Oh what a load of madness barca are more foolish than real. I think the ball does'nt play the role in the football world any more, money is now playing the role behalf of the ball. How can barca be that crazy to release that crazy news.I think they must give Messi and Zlatan for free and than 85 midllion bid for Wayne Rooney. From SHEEHAMA aka CR from NAMIBIA (WHk)

By Sheehama. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:23 AM.

By Txomin. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:11 AM.

By Hussein. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:04 AM.

Wow im suprised they;r trying to forget bout robinho and trying to focus on rooney. i think 85/6 million is just about over his actuall price. so i really think he should move to Barcelona and play against his former team Mate Cristian Ronaldo. Oviously playin with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Ibrahimovich etc is a great experience but the question is that can he perform at barcelona at his best ablity?

£85 for fatboy rooney lmao
he aint that good all he is good is eating pies

By phil. Posted November 8 2009 at 8:10 AM.

Rooney will revert to type at the world cup, he will moan on and on at the referee's but will find that he isn't protected by "Fergie's laws" and will subsequently be sent off. He may have all the skill in the world but his attitude towards officials is diabolical. As for his loyalty ask David Moyes. he may have a lot more skill than Lescott but sadly they dont know the first thing about loyalty.

Shrek, yep he looks like Shrek, he's loyal, happy with the rope & tyre United give him yearly, Barca should try a double coop. take Gerrard with him.....Roo needs somebody to clean his boots HAHAHA

By RED CRIDD. Posted November 8 2009 at 8:01 AM.

If people really want to know how good rooney is just ask Sir Alex or Mr Capello. He is probably the most complete player in the world at the minute, certainly in the top three.

£85 million for the best player in the world nnnnaaarrrr, Ronalndo was only a bit part player compared to ROO and look at what we squeezed out of Real Misfit for him

By red cridd. Posted November 8 2009 at 7:12 AM.

85 million for SHREK!!NICE JOKE!!NOT EVEN WORTH 15 million

By elnino. Posted November 8 2009 at 7:07 AM.

to all you so called pretend experts. if you only had 10% of his skills you would really understand how good this lad really is.to play in some of the biggest stadiums in the world and at the level and pace of the modern game for club and country always under the spotlight you would not be bagging him like you are if ronaldo kaka benziema are worth there price tag so is rooney end of story

By mark . Posted November 8 2009 at 6:33 AM.

The only thing Rooney is loyal to is the almighty £.
Whatever happened to once a blue always a blue??????...seems he is colour blind!
He isnt worth £85 mill lol

By Sue. Posted November 8 2009 at 5:42 AM.

Anyone saying Rooney is more loyal than Ronaldo must be a blind manu supporter. Ronaldo always made it clear, if Real want him, they have to pay united the sum they wanted.
Rooney might not want to go because of his new child and but then thoughts of playing with messi and co is surely tempting...
But Barca management seem to be more foolish than Madrids.
Ibrahmovic didn't seem to be much expensive but if you check his real value, 40m + Etoo (at 25 m, and only one year aged than Zlatan) comes around at 65 million... And we all know zlatan may be an overall better player but Etoo was way better as a finisher.

Rooney for 85M will never be a rational for any buyer, except for United owners to pay back their debt...

Joe, the comment about Messi and Iniesta was obviously very much tongue in cheek. You're obviously not English though (the EPL???) so we'll forgive you.

£85million for Shriek? Wow the world is going mad.

By ninna. Posted November 8 2009 at 4:30 AM.

Not all players are greedy and disloyal, some actually play for a club because they want to, "once a blue always a blue" were the words of a very young naive player who decided that he wanted to be playing for a top premiership club who would be winning silverware.
