But the Burnley midfielder heads into today's derby with Blackburn ready to tear it up like a teenager thanks to his scientific approach to the game.
Alexander may have turned 38 but he has racked up 78 consecutive league games as a result of trying every new fitness fad.
And no one appreciates his efforts more than Manchester United legend Giggs, who is three years behind the Scottish international. Alexander said: "Ryan is younger than me - that's how old I am! We made our debut around the same time in 1991 but I am a few years older.
"We were both captains when we played United recently and he joked we were the oldest captains in the Premier League but he understands what it's like to keep on playing.
"He didn't ask for any advice on lengthening his career, though. I don't think he needs it."
Alexander has tried every method from yoga and pilates to ice baths and praying.
He added: "I have done just about everything you can do - including talking to the big man upstairs.
"There is no secret, though. I try to eat well and have ice baths every day."
