ALAN SMITH IS BOLTON TARGET

Gary Megson planning January move for Toon skipper

MOVE - Alan Smith

BOLTON boss Gary Megson is planning to sign Newcastle skipper Alan Smith.

Megson has had the former England international watched several times this season and is preparing a bid of around £2million when the transfer window opens in January.

Though Smith, 28, started his career as a striker, he has dropped deeper into the centre of midfield in recent years. He has starred in that position since Newcastle were relegated.

Now Megson wants the player to replace summer signing Sean Davis, who is out for the season with a knee injury.

Smith cost Newcastle £6m from Manchester United two seasons ago - but Megson will be hoping to pick him up for considerably less at this stage of his career.

Everton manager David Moyes is also a long-time admirer of Smith's passion and commitment and is closely monitoring the situation at St James' Park.

As a long standing Smudger fan going back to his early Leeds career, I am delighted that he's finally finding his feet at Newcastle. Okay the Championship is probably about his level considering the terrible leg injury and the massive dip in confidence due to a number of mitigating circumstances. But he is absolutely not finished at Premiership level as he still has a job to do with the likes of an Everton or Bolton type team. However, I know with some confidence and authority that it would take a heck of a lot to persuade Smudger to leave Newcastle now he's found his feet and has been cut some more slack. If he takes them back up and then leaves with his head held high, should he feel the need to, then that would be job done, I cannot believe Smudger would be tempted into leaving when there's still work to be done and a good job to be had at St James.
Whatever the rights and wrongs of the aftermath of Leeds going down, he fought to the end and saw the job out, even if it led to a messy and tragic relegation. A guy who does alot for charity behind the scenes and really loves his sport is not going to walk out for struggling to mid table Premiership football when challenging, exciting and confidence boosting escapades are to be had with Newcastle. Never thought I'd say that!!!!!

P.S. Come on you Leeds!!!!! :-)

Cmon smudge going to bolton why would he want to go to a smaller club as what is boltons largest attendance this season 45,000?

Why on earth would he leave a huge club where he's enjoying his football playing in front of a big and passionate crowd to join ......Bolton?

Complete nonsense. Megson tried to get Nolan and he wasn't interested neither will Smith be.

Perfect for the Bolton game. Hard solid lad, fully committed to tackling. I spoke to Sir Alex when Smithy was at Man U and not getting used enough. I asked about the chances of a loan deal at Bolton (Big Sam era). Alex assessment was Smithy would be perfect for the Bolton game but your not having him!! I made comments on Wiley back in August via the Liverpool Echo after the Bolton Liverpool game. I questioned his stamina and fitness. Nobody got upset about my comments!!
