Beckham said last week that talks were at an advanced stage between LA Galaxy and the Serie A club.
The midfielder, 34, enjoyed a successful spell at the San Siro last season and is keen to rejoin the club at the start of 2010.
Last time he helped fund the loan switch himself - but Sport of the World understands that is not going to happen in this deal.
Cash-strapped AC will have to stump up the full value of his contract for his stay.
That could cost around £70,000 a week, although the Italians want to pay no more than £40,000.
Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi - the Italian Prime Minister - is rumoured to be thinking about selling up and coach Leonardo appears to be on borrowed time after a mediocre start to the season.
Becks knows England boss Fabio Capello will not pick him for the World Cup if he is not playing in one of Europe's top leagues.
And now three or four Premier League clubs are interested in the coup of recruiting him in January.
None of the Big Four are in the frame but Spurs boss Harry Redknapp might be tempted.
Beckham has not ruled out a return to England, although Milan remains his favoured destination.
Last week Tim Leiweke, the boss of LA Galaxy owners AEG, said: "We appreciate what he's doing here with England.
"We want to get a deal done for David and for us. If he's not playing in Europe in January, he's not going to the World Cup.
"So we would be honoured to help because we want to make sure he fulfils that dream."

Forgive me for starting a controversy here, but isn't it about time we stopped trying to accommodate the selfish "needs" of brand Beckham and set our sights on winning the World Cup without him??
Sure, he's still a good player but for all the baggage he carries around with him, is he really worth all the aggro ?? We have plenty of good players who can more than compensate for the doubtful loss.
It's time to move on please !!!

Moving to Europe will not automatically guarantee him a place in the England team. The first and foremost is his performance on the field. This is what Capello looks for, and not big names.

As a hardcore Galaxy fan, I of course want Beckham to stay with us as long as he can, but if his england coach wants him to play in a premeire team I think there is no other option but for him to play in Europe from the end of the MLS playoffs to the World Cup. He needs to end his soccer career on a high, and not let his one of a kind skill go to waste. I love him on the Galaxy, and us true fans want is what best for him. If he shows good will towards the Galaxy us fans can reciprocate that feeling.
