Promoter Frank Warren is in negotiations with the popular Jewish New Yorker, who is undefeated in 31 contests.
He hopes to entice him to England with a lucrative offer to avoid purse bids further down the line.
Trainer Freddie Roach had claimed Khan was likely to face Manchester rival John Murray in his next fight, but Warren says that is untrue.
Khan won the championship in July when he outpointed Andreas Kotelnik.
He is expected to fly to Los Angeles or Mexico next month for his training camp.
The Bolton star will again prepare alongside Ricky Hatton-basher Manny Pacquiao.
The brilliant Filipino will face Miguel Cotto in November in the richest fight of 2009.
Sky Box Office have screened Khan's last four fights, but it is understood ESPN are taking an interest in getting the 22-year- old star on board.

i thought it would be better if amir khan fights the one who knocked him out,i know boxing is business,i think people would love to see this fight, the thing with british boxers or their managers ,they wait too long for the big fights ,avoidance is the word, like lennox lewis with tyson fighting him not in his prime.you can't consider a god fighter if you only fight for money or fighting for tactical purposes.they should be warriors!

Actually khan is exciting to watch, kotelnik made him seem less powerful but kotelniks chin is just amazing thats all, but khans power is underated and if opponents like murray or bradley underestimate it, then they are in trouble.

Player haters never get no where because they are usually jelous. Yo i know Khan with his new ways can handle anybody just like he did sparring with pac man. His hand n foot speed is the thing that makes people forget his power that helped him stop fights early in most his fights. Just watch my homeboy Khan is gonna bring that CAN of whoop ass on future fights cause he's training in my turf full of real savages thats right CALIFORNIA WEST SIDE BIIIIAAAAACCH-----GONE

khan started his career fighting bums , as most boxers start off , but he always seemed to talk as if he's the best .Getting KO'd by breidis prescott was the second best thing to happen to him , the first was getting freddie roach in his corner . Even khans biggest critics cannot deny that since he's been trained by Roach he has matured and now seems capable of keeping his title and going far in the sport .

I don't know what it is but i find it really hard to get excited about Amir. He's a decent fighter but i don't think he's a world beater. He talks a good fight. Barerra was over the hill and i don't recognise any of the other guys he fought (even the one that knocked him out).

Call me cynical but does this not reek of yet another Warren move to protect his vested interest in Mr Khan his Olympic golden boy protege?
Amir Khan is not even the best in the UK never mind him "holding" a world title. He beat Kotelnik fair and square but what was unfair is that he was undeservedly pushed to the head of the queue to get that shot.
John Murray is a danger to Khan and both Warren and Khan know it. John Murray has slogged it out on a domestic and international level for years now and not got the recognition he deserves. I hope Dmitry Salita exposes khan and his glass chin-just like Breidis Prescott did.
