BECKHAM OFFERS TO LEAD 2012 SQUAD

England star wants to captain Olympic team

Becks wants to lead 2012 squad
OLYMPIC: Becks wants to lead 2012 squad

DAVID BECKHAM is offering to lead Great Britain's football team at the London 2012 Olympics.

The England star is desperate to be involved after playing a key role in helping capture the Games.

Leytonstone-born Becks said: "I was very proud to play a part in bringing the Olympics to London. It was such a great thrill when we were awarded them so to go on to be a part of 2012 itself will be just terrific.

"I would certainly love to be involved with the GB football team.

"Obviously, I would be very much an 'older' player by then but I definitely want to be involved there in some capacity."

Under current rules, Beckham would be free to captain and play for Team GB even though he will be 37. But FIFA, with the age limit still to be set, is threatening to scrap the "three over-age players" allowance.

So Beckham is also ready to help coach the squad.

The FA say they hope to announce the GB team's manager by the end of the year with Fulham boss Roy Hodgson the favourite.

David Beckham was involved in the bid to bring the Olympics to Great Britain just like Raul represented Spain in Singapore in 2005.
As a former Man Utd and England player, he and Sir Bobby Charlton (who knew him since he was about 10 )were a part of the Olympics bid and he is still involved in the work of the 2012 committee....and YES they needed him especially since Spain was a rival nation and at the time David was a Real Madrid player.

He reserves the right to participate and represent England and Great Britain in whatever capacity the committee sees fit because he has been playing football all his life - at the most popular clubs and as an England international - just like he played a part back in 2005.

If Beckham leads the olympics team, the only medal we will get is one of being a complete laughing stock. That Harpy of a wife of his is dragging him down. Not that I'm a fan of football I can't stand the game, but I will admit that until she got her hooks into him he was pretty good. Since she's latched onto him he's gone rapidily down hill and every team he's played in he's totally screwed up.
So much so that they are only too glad to get shot of him and that harpy of his.

I suspect that a lot of this apparent need for self-publicity from Becks may well be coming from Posh. You can almost hear her, can't you - "Come on David, we have to keep our profile up. If you don't volunteer for it, someone else will." Before he met her he used to be a shy lad and we heard how he would stay in with the curtains drawn. Post Posh, it's non-stop photo opportunities, TV appearances, Olympic ambassador functions. Not a coincidence, methinks.

Give the lad a chance you doubters, hes been a great player for both england and man u and his experience is second to none, good luck to him.

Could someone please confirm that the age limit for the team is 21 years ??

Are we going to let another Olympic sport be hi-jacked by the millionaires in sport who are only competing for their own ego.

The Football World Cup is simply a group of self publicist multi-millionaires kicking a ball about for the plebs to pay their hard-earned cash in trance-like support.

If some of them looked at the state of grassroots football
caused by their perpetual greed -THEY'D STILL LAUGH ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK AND STICK TWO FINGERS UP AT JOE PUBLIC!!

An Olympic version of This Is Spinal Tap? Why not just centre the whole Olympic Games around Beckham. Give him the captaincy. Have him light the Olympic cauldron with the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony. Let him lead the athlete’s procession and get the royal composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davis to compose a newly commissioned Olympic tune aptly titled ‘Beckham’ and play it at both closing and ending ceremonies. Why not make fashion design an Olympic event and have his Mrs to be sole competitor so that she is guaranteed a gold medal and can showcase her latest collection?

This sums up Beckham's thought processes. Even his staunchest supporters would struggle to claim that, at age 37, he would be the best man to lead Great Britain. He is clearly not motivated by what is best for his country or nation, but solely by what will add to his fame. Just like his move to the footballing backwater of Los Angeles so he could hang out with his new buddies (Tom Cruise etc.) If Capello offered Becks the option of travelling all the way to Australia for a meaningless friendly and said he'd only bring him on for the last 10 seconds to give him another cap, Becks would jump at it. He is desperate for every record, for every TV appearance, for every celebrity friend and the poor bloke needs to be put out of his misery.

Time to go Becks, you are too old my boy, time to give a youngster a chance, you should be a fulltime father now your sons need you or take over your football academy in East London, please do not disgrace yourself, just do it and retire.
Find a career in football.

someone who has represented their country over 100 times has clearly done something right. i'm not beckhams biggest fan but he is clearly one of the better players this country has produced in the last 15 years. he's ability at deadball situations is 2nd to non. nobody in world has caused as much damage or created as much fear in a defenders box consistantly than beckham. yes you do have questions the motives about his above statement but he is like anyone in this country we would all love to be envolved in the olympics inyour own country as it will not happen again in 95% of the current poplutions life time. okay he might be looking at the olympics as a marketing plan but what if, just maybe he is saying the above cause he wants to take part in the greatest and biggest event this country will see for a long time. i'm personally hope its he wants to be involved but i have my doubts.

i love beck and want to see him playing always.

Being an African English supporter i am compelled to add my voice to this David Beckham debate. The men has had a wonderful career and i feel its time he bowed out gracefully and give the upcoming youngsters a chance. It seems to me David is in denial that his sun is about to set, he is obsessed with amassing caps even at the expense of England winning the World Cup in South Africa. The media has been partly to blame for Beckam being delusional. He reminds me more of Holyfield, the boxer who refuses to retire and subject the public to mediocre perfomances. He also reminds me of African dictators who refuse to vacate the office and give younger generation their chance to shine. I can bet my last dollar that if Beckam plays for England in South Africa, England can kiss their chance of winning the world cup goodbye. The team stand better chance of winning with the younger generation of Theo Walcott, Ashley Young, etc. I dont see Brazil taking Roberto Carlos to South Africa, why should England take David?

to effectivley have a team gb squad each brit nation gets 4 out feild players and a gk

By adam.. Posted September 6 2009 at 2:02 PM.

TEAM BECKHAM !!!!!

By gee.. Posted September 6 2009 at 1:39 PM.

JAMES.. Which players in the current England squad warrant our trust then, based upon their performances at previous major tournaments??
Gerrard? Lampard? They've all had plenty of opportunities to shine. I don't see Beckham as a man for the starting line-up ut for many of the younger players he is still somewhat of an icon and having him there, with his wealth of experience, can only be a good thing.

By Simboy.. Posted September 6 2009 at 12:30 PM.

The only ''baggage" is the HATERS who follow him around religiously, no matter where he is or where he plays - obviously more obsessed with him than any fan of his. It is pathetic beyond words!

By junr.. Posted September 6 2009 at 12:27 PM.

The Olympic games should not be hijacked and turned into yet another farcical self fuelled Beckham media circus. Enough is enough! The games reputation should not be devalued and dragged through the mud.

What a gross act of disrespect it would be to other serious and dedicated competing athletes if a decade past is best come semi-retired has-been is given a 'golden ticket' to perform at 37 years. Why not just field a 'showbiz select 11'? Are Cannon and Ball available? What about The Krankies? Freddie Starr goalkeeper anyone?

By Steve.. Posted September 6 2009 at 12:47 PM.

david beckham...what more can you say about this pathetic narcissist....his football career was over when ferguson finally saw him for what he was..a vastly over-rated player and a shallow, celebrity seeking,self-publicist..He should stay in L.A. where he belongs...

By kevin.. Posted September 6 2009 at 10:45 AM.

junr, if beckham had played in croatia which all his fans like you wanted then walcott would never have won us the game with that hat-trick. sure if beckham had played and one of his corners had happened to have been put in for say an equalizer then youd be crediting that hypothetical draw to your man again which displays your narrow mind. milans fans dont want him back at their club, that says it all. beckham has had chance after chance and tournament after tournament to justify even some of his hype and hes failed comprehensively. He still brings along all his baggage but not much else to the england set-up and should now be jettisoned for good.

By james.. Posted September 6 2009 at 11:37 AM.

Years from now we may hear Sir Alex speak of his regret over the way David Beckham Manchester Uniteds' first modern day "Franchise Player" was shown the door.He wasn't just Uniteds, but English footballs first modern day "Franchise Player" He was the most famous footballer in the world when he was transferred to Real Madrid. The transfer fee Madrid payed was recouped in six months yes six months in shirt sales alone.Beckham was never bigger than United but Fergie didn't know how to manage having a "Franchise Player" on his team.Uniteds' team was and is full of stars but none with the kind of worldwide fame of Beckham. It took until the fourth season after Beckhams departure to win the league and our midfield still lacks his quality. His best position is in central midfield where he can use his football brain and Beckham has that in spades. This is one of the reasons so many world class teammates respect Beckham. His Vision. When Roy Keane was injured everything went through Beckham and we won more often than not.The only player currently playing for United who has the same confidence and vision with the ball in midfield is Paul Scholes. Our midfield has still not recovered since the departure of David Beckham. It seems to be a flaw in the English psyche that when you have something special you don't sing their praises you demean, run them down, find fault. The man is world famous becase he is a pretty good footballer not the best in the world but seen as being pretty close to the best in his younger years and still very useful even today.Still one of the most recognisable English footballers on the planet. You don't achieve this over 17 years by being mediocre.

By Shaun Scott.. Posted September 6 2009 at 11:54 AM.

Beskham is still the best midfielder Engaland has. No bobody in the England squad can match him.In Mid field or Central Midfiled. He is the best. No doubr about it...

By Andrew Janting.. Posted September 6 2009 at 9:51 AM.

junr, he was irrelevant at milan, a player well out his depth when i saw him for them v Inter and Juventus and any other top side they played. He failed miserably to impact 5 turnaments with england and seems to base his entire game around hitting the same free-kick over and over again and hoping it comes off about once in a blue moon. Last one for england was over 3 years ago now wasnt it? probably the most stupidly overrated football in the history of he game.

By james.. Posted September 6 2009 at 9:33 AM.

Lol at all the haters here who cannot ignore becks and then are writing their hearts out about him being constantly in the media spotlight. He obviously makes the media to this day because of his ability as a footballer. You seem happy to want to write and read about jeers from fans and a sending-off in the minor league in America but a match-winning goal by him met with cheers by fans should be ignored. You cannot have it both ways.

At AC Milan, he was in the media because of his impressive football.
A TWICE runner-up World Footballer of the Year and Best Player and midfielder in Europe's most prestigious club champonship has no reason to be deluded about his ability, neither are his coaches like Capello or Ancelotti.
David Beckham's successful comebacks for England and more recently in Europe (AC MILAN) have been because of his ABILITY AS A FOOTBALLER. THAT IS THE MAIN REASON WHY HE IS IN THE MEDIA SPOTLIGHT!!
When the media and the haters need him sooo much, then he certainly will n ot be forgotten or ignored.

By junr.. Posted September 6 2009 at 8:54 AM.

What are the media up to now ? Come on he played a couple of good times for England but thats it ! Short memories or what ? He cost us dearly with his petulance against Argentina remember ? and again here in Portugal when he admitted he wasnt fit !!!!!!What was he doing then even playing ?? Can you imagine SIR ALF even contemplating making a captain of a man who arranges pre world cup parties for the squad !!!! and is seen prancing about in a sarong ??????' the likes of Moore ,Ball,Haynes, etc,He just devalues their memories with the amount of CAPS ??? he has amassed .

It will happen as long as the money keeps rolling in...

By Jennie.. Posted September 6 2009 at 8:48 AM.

The luckiest player ever! Not since he left MAN United has he actually done anything.. He plays at a amatuar level in the States.. he isn't fit enough for International football.. But oh I forgot.. he can cross a ball.. What a load of ******

By Tim Collins.. Posted September 6 2009 at 8:12 AM.

Capello is doing a fabulous job, England look like qualifying for South Africa with ease. Is it now, not time to stop critisising his dicision to include, in his sqad, a world class player of proven ability purely on the grounds of age? The constant debate in the press on this matter can only have a negative effect on the managers thinking, leave the man alone to do his job.
Also David Beckham should be involved in the Olympic team as a player, only if he continues to perform to the high standards we all know he is capable of regardless of age. We need to apoint a manager who like Capello will pick his sqad on merit and not bow down to the press and public opinion.

By trueblue.. Posted September 6 2009 at 8:10 AM.

Ask profesional footballers if the worlds most famous football player is not overrated and egotistical
He is the best ambassador English football has ever had

By Bob.. Posted September 6 2009 at 7:08 AM.

He is in Capello's squad on merit. Not one player in the current side can strike a ball and deliver set pieces like Beckham. Sad it maybe that not one of the current midfield crop have honed their skills in this way. Lennon, Young etc. may cause mahem in the defences of teams like Slovenia, made up of French and German second division players, but in the WC when one free kick could make all the difference I know who I would like to be taking it.

By Jason.. Posted September 6 2009 at 7:54 AM.

...on what? A Mobilty Scooter? Don't make me laugh! This is not a marketing circus....if GB are in it it's because they want to win it. Scots, Welsh & Irish can't stand the thought let alone a muppet like you strutting around claiming captaincy.......LMFAO!

By 4rsenal411.. Posted September 6 2009 at 7:43 AM.

He's yesterdays man, just like George Brown
full of it, I'm fed up of reading about both of
them, Go back to America Beckham and stay
there

By Dave Smal.. Posted September 6 2009 at 6:45 AM.

David Beckham should not be in any English football team, amateur or pro. His skills have always been subject to question, now they are non-existent.

By robert.. Posted September 6 2009 at 5:58 AM.

He has consistently been the most overrated player in the world for the past 5 to 6 years and yet he still plays for england. Its an absolute joke he broke Bobby Moores cap record, at least Bobby played 90 mins every match not 5 or 6 minutes, what the hell is capello thinking and the british media by playing this self centred, egotistical, meglomaniac up. And now he wants to go to the olympics, why dont you guys write stories on how he is now overrated and a has been, wake up guys your adding to making british football a joke.

By David.. Posted September 6 2009 at 3:18 AM.

He should consider himself lucky if he's offered seats at any of the games - offering to captain the side is just showing his conceit and delusional belief in his always over-rated and now rapidly diminishing abilities. If they do allow over 21s to take part, then there will be a hundred better options wanting to be part of the team than that self-serving old timer.

By zz.. Posted September 6 2009 at 2:38 AM.

Beckham the self serving, selfish ego-maniac come greed machine will have to be forcefully dragged kicking and screaming from the media spotlight! He knows the profits, marketability, sustainability and self publicty aspect of Brand Beckham will drastically plumment if he is ignored, forgotten and seen as an aging has-been, hence his desire for Olympic Games involment.
