The United boss branded City arrogant and showed contempt for Tevez, who has been heralded with a huge poster on a main road in the centre of Manchester.
Fergie also claimed City new boy Emmanuel Adebayor called United to try and engineer a move to Old Trafford instead. But the former Arsenal striker was turned down flat.
Ferguson said: "The billboard is City, isn't it? They are a small club with a small mentality.
"All they can talk about is Manchester United, that's all they've ever done and they can't get away from it. That's stupid. That arrogance will be rewarded in the right way. It's a go at us, that's the one thing it is. I don't look upon City as my biggest challenge.
"They think taking Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff. I thought he would go to City a long time ago. Now I don't have to deal with certain players who are miserable because they are not playing. I have good professionals here.
"What's Mark Hughes got, 10 strikers? So if he picks a squad to go to Chelsea he has to leave seven behind, or five at least. He has to deal with that. It will not be easy."
Fergie also revealed striker Adebayor - desperate to sign for a club playing Champions League football - called United and Chelsea in the hope they would hijack his move to Eastlands from Arsenal.
The United chief added: "At the last minute, from what I can gather, I know Adebayor or his agent phoned us after he had agreed a deal with City and then did the same to Chelsea.
"You ask why he is going to Manchester City and it can only be for one reason. He was desperate to get to Chelsea and he was desperate to get to us.

"I am not saying they are different to any other player but when someone offers you more money, that is a big attraction. That is the reason those players have gone there. I can't say I'm enthusiastic about the season because of everything that has gone on but there is an edge being put on us because of all the buying City have done.
"Do you know what City's biggest triumph is? It's getting those players there. I don't know if they will do anything. It's not easy to get in that top four so the biggest success is just to get the players there. They might not get beyond that.
"The top four has been established a long time. Liverpool or Chelsea won't die. City's spending is only demoralising if you panic.
"The one who has the challenge is Arsene. I know he doesn't have the money and how he uses that £25m will be very interesting. The test might not come from City. Tottenham, Aston Villa and Everton will all have a say."

Quite amazing how little things distract distinguished personality. I think SAF is over reacting to the poster issue. He has won and achieved it all with MAN U. There's no question about that. And for him to react to a trivial issue as ignoble as a mere ad,.... that ought to give him a good dose of laughter.... is incomprehensible to me. That belongs to small achievers and people of little minds. Maybe he should equally retort to MOURIHO's taunts too .... "TEVEZ WILL CLINCH IT ....PSL". For me, a GUNNER, I still think MAN U still has the capacity to retain the title. Even with the departure of RONNIE and TEVEZ, there's still dept in the team. So, SAF should worryless about the distraction of MAN CITY and concentrate on the coming season. Well, in all, it's all about and in the game. Don't you think?
By Ikechukwu Ogbonna .. Posted July 28 2009 at 8:42 AM.
I am surprised Sir AFurgeson is taking this matter seriously. Tevez all the while was waiting to be offered a contract by United but SAF treated him like dirt, giving him hope and then ignoring him. Now that he has found a team that was prepared to embrace him, SAF just could not accept it. Just grow up SAF....

This is my 4th try at commenting on how the arrogant and disrespectful red nosed fergie's retort at man city's poster.
Non of my other comments had any swear words at all.
I just wish that he would stop accusing other managers or teams of things that he himself would do against anyone because he is the most arrogant and disrespectful manager in all the footballing world.
He is jealous that he can't have manure's ground old scrufford in Manchester city centre, his team are in a suburb of Manchester and it's riling him.
He let's his supporters use similar posters and banners at old scrufford on home games, even though those posters and banners are ridiculing away supporters.
Get a life fergie it's a poster not a doomsday warning, although it might be a doomsday warning for YOU, maybe you should put a poster up of owen on crutches to scare the kid's away from old scrufford.

as a Man United Supporter I Jonathan am Confident that Our Man United Team will win all the Trophies this season and We will have a Full Trophy Cabinet at Old Trafford with all the New Trophies Man United have some Good Fantasic Players for Our Club this season and I Think it is time for Mark Hughes of Manchester City to Shut his Mouth Because Man United Will Stuff Manchester City in the Premiership this season and Manchester City will be Relegated Next season to the Championship Division .

Have to laugh at PaulWakey getting on at someone for use of punctuation. "Were'nt" is "weren't", "You're" in that context is "Your".
I'm Scottish and I'm laughing at the exorbitant wages your teams are paying for someone to kick a ball around a small pitch. Utter lunacy. Your game has become all about money and if Man City continue the way they do, who is to say they cannot buy success?
By Scott Mitchell.. Posted July 26 2009 at 3:05 PM.
bitter little man fergie hates it now there is more teams that can compete, he liked it when he could outspend everyone and win things with no real competition, well now there are others with money we will see the bitter little man retire soon, oh and 2 euro cups in 20 years is a disgrace for a manager that has outspent everyone else in all them years.....ledgend?? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Er, John Manchester. When I went to school we got taught about full stops and commas. You're ignorance and obvious lack of education shows you up for what you are, a typical City, floodlights taller, corner flags bigger, trophy room emptier, City fan. You aim to finish in the top six, What dizzy heights, or so I hear. Good luck, Johny boy - it won't happen. As for Tevez - this time next year you might not be so keen to keep him, as we were'nt. But at least you won't need your pitch mowing as regular. I also hear United fans have comissioned a 40 years and counting banner, I reckon it will be awesome - but not as good as the 50 years and counting one. Last time u lot won the league, the ball had a lace in it. The next time you win the league, there will be no ball but just a lace. Johnny, the fullstop button is second on the right from the M. Oh and the biggest team in Manchester is the one that has to polish all the cups every year. Ask Carlos, before he forgets what trophies look like. Have this one , John, on me ..
By paulwakey.. Posted July 26 2009 at 2:28 PM.
well said obi, it's nice to hear someone be honest for once. good teams deserve respect and to be celebrated for the entertainment they provide. i don't recall chelsea putting together pathetic posters about local rivals when they got bought my roman. why? they've got more self-respect and were only bothered about themselves doing well. you'll find in manchester that most city fans never talk about football the game, just about united, bla, bla, bla. i once sat with a blue who with a serious face said he didn't rate ronaldo! yes ronaldo, he of the ballon d'or! what planet are they on? as a red born in manchester it's natural to hate liverpool as they do us but you'll find most united fans respect them because they've been there and done it and are up there as a formidable side. i would never belittle torres's prowess because he plays for liverpool. it smacks of pettiness and when all said and done you cannot deny class - or in city's case you simply cannot have it full stop.
By eric's collar.. Posted July 26 2009 at 2:26 PM.
Beautiful. The bitters are so deluded they think that Fergie - despite all the success he has had down the years, and all the challengers he has disposed of - has been shaken by a poster and a team containing 3 of last year's most un-prolific strikers...and Gareth Barry. I very much doubt that he cares what anyone thinks of his opinions, and he definitely won't when he's lifting another league title next May.
By Edgio.. Posted July 26 2009 at 2:05 PM.

Brilliant! fergie saying everything that the whole premiership is thinking. Only City could think that just because they have money they are a big club. But no.And there team and manager, Hughes- ex Blackburn Manager, Santa Cruz - ex Blackburn. Adeboyor- couldnt make the cut at Arsenal. Tevez- A mercianary who scores 4 goals a season. who they think is there best player. what a joke City are, embarresing themselves again. when they signed Tevez, it wasnt, (we have signed Carlos Tevez), it was, we signed a United Striker. The mighty reds will always be at the top. Start looking at your own club and leave your infatuation with us. mid table for you once again. See you in September and we will show you once again how big of a club you really are.

Why is Fergie holding a daily press conference to talk about City ? . Surely there must be some united issues to talk about. He could talk about Valencia's 4 goals in the last 2 years. He is a very worried old man. Keep it coming Fergie

Fergie is truly unbelievable. Only a couple of months after attempting to stir up something between Liverpool & Everton, showing his disgust at Benetez 'small club' comments and what is he now saying about city?
If Rafa was 'ranting' then Fergie must be 'RAVING'.
Cracking up?...whithout a doubt.

Did anyone see the city supporting comic jason manford on jonathan ross a while back? when asked if it was true that there was no united supporters in manchester he categorically said that this wasn't true unfortunately, there is loads of them. this from a blue. i'm united, 80% of the people i know in manchester are too so shut it with your weak attempts at belittling my club. why would a club as collosal and successful as united not have local support. have you any idea how embarrassing your comments are. why did 1 million people turn up on the streets of MANCHESTER to welcome the TREBLE WINNING team home. did they all fly over from tokyo? win a trophy then start mouthing off.

Why not welcome people to the real Manchester with this poster. United have their support in childish people who want to support a successful team. They are living far away from Manchester and will switch support to any team that is winning.

No doubt the marketing boys at bitterland are congratulating themselves on this. I remember allison and doyle in the 60's goading Utd,so it's nothing new. Allison was alway's comparing little city to Utd,about how they will be a bigger club and how they will terrify Europe! Heard it all before, yawn, yawn! With success sometimes comes arrogance. city seem to have by-passed thefirst part!

Prediction - After 10 games into the new season Man City will be 17th with 11 points. Mark Hughes will be given a vote of confidence and sacked the following week. Kevin Keegan will be appointed and introduced to a welcoming crowd of 11,666 fans sporting a solid gold, light blue crown of thorns. He will get on everyones nerves and find himself with a squad of players gazing wistfully into the past. City will be relegated, thier financial backers will pull out, and the sky blues will 'do a Leeds Utd.' Happy days!
By tim.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:42 AM.
Fergusons worried about city! Like it or not, within 2/3 years, City will be title contenders. Hes best off retiring now, while his team are on top+ before city take over the mantle of the best team in Manchester.
By roge.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:33 AM.

By david callaghan.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:28 AM.
I think Fergie must see City as a genuine threat and has thrown his toys out of the pram!
Any other team that does something well he cannot stand and has always been the same, Ok city have not won anything but I am sure it will only be a matter of time.
Lets hope he leaves us alone next season and concentrates on city.

i love my football and i find it very amusing how all of you can get so worked up by comments made everyday by managers. The season hasn't even started and the petty bickering is endless. Fergie has to say something to the press and so does mark Hughes, Benitez etc etc. Fergie's made a story for the media and its 'controversial' nature just creates free publicity and sells newspapers. you lot argue about football like i did with my friends at the age of 10/11!!!! grow up the lot of you. in the end your comments wont change anything to do with your team. I understand your passion but what is it actually achieving??? your team, win, lose or draw will not be affected by your mindless arguing on newspaper websites.
By entertaining boredom.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:13 AM.
I'm no United fan, but I think City fans are a little deluded if they think that UEFA will allow their leaders to drive wage inflation and clubs to the rocks (ala £260K for Terry).
Within 3 years UEFA will have a franchise model in place to limit the power of the billionaires in football.
If they move to the American Model it will mean all clubs throughout Europe will have a fairer economic playing field and lead to better leagues throughout Europe.
By Pete borota.. Posted July 26 2009 at 9:59 AM.
Fergie is obviously worried now there is serious money for another Manchester club to buy talent and userp his team of old age pensioners.
Unfortunately he hasn't accepted the fact he and Manchester United have had it too good for too long.
HEY ! FERGIE! When you are on top, the only way is DOWN !
Enjoy the trip.
By Fred.. Posted July 26 2009 at 10:00 AM.
I find Fergies whole attitude towards Mark Hughes a little contemptful. Here is a guy that basically saved Fergies career back in the day and there is Fergie disrespecting his judgement.
Fergie is only happy when people fawn to him - like 'Big Sam Allardyce' who disgracefully tried to double team Rafa last season. Fergie is beyond contempt and I am sad to say that as a fellow Scot.
Good luck City. I hope you completely usurp United as top dog in Manchester. I'm a Liverpool fan by the way.
By Neil.. Posted July 26 2009 at 9:55 AM.
as a liverpool fan i thought id never say it but i agree with taggart, i mean fergie on this one.
city are a small club, 2nd biggest in manchester and have done nothing in my lifetime. how the hell sparky will keep all his "STAR" strikers happy is beyond me. each ego is bigger than the next. they have the forward line of a good club but the defence of a relegation club. they might score some goals but i can see a lot of 4-3, 5-4 losses for them unless they get some defenders. forget toure and terry. they aint joining that lot. i dont think they ever had a chance with terry, that was to keep the fans happy. they should have went all out for Daniel Agger. he wasnt happy at the end of last season and would have gotten him cheap(£10-£15m) as he didnt have long left on his contract and is better than carra and skyrtle. for me hes the 2nd best central defender in europe after Vidic.
By denis.. Posted July 26 2009 at 9:54 AM.

By toddie.. Posted July 26 2009 at 9:06 AM.
The difference between the 33 years countdown at OT and the Tevez poster is that the Tevez poster is in the centre of Manchester and the the 33 years is a fan thing. The Tevez poster has obviously been sanctioned by the citeh board and shows a complete lack of dignity and class. Who cares anyway? United are a Manchester club - they're originally from Newton Heath which, for all those millions of international citeh supporters, is a district of Manchester. If that's all that citeh have to beat United with then that shows just how pathetic they are. No-one is jealous of citeh - they have nothing to be jealous of: 33 years and counting. Tick Tock - 'til Hughes gets kicked out and all those transfer requests start coming in.
By RedLee.. Posted July 26 2009 at 8:45 AM.
"its beyond the pail" that a Manager has such contempt for another club and such disrespect for another manager!!!! makes you laugh the way the old taggart lambasted Rafa for doing something nowhere near as scathing against Everton, maybe he is cracking up? The poster is a a bit of a laugh like the one around Manchester advertising the Utd dvd which says "Champions 19 times Thats a fact! which is obviously a dig at rafa'a rant, humour Sir Alex is the essence of life
By Richie.. Posted July 26 2009 at 8:18 AM.
I'm a Man United faithfull follower and have driven the 600 mile round trip to the ground on numerous occations, yes i agree Sir Alex has taken the bait regarding City's poster, as it's only a poster after all, prehaps they should use the space to advertise for a trophy cabinet cleaner, BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T NEEDED ONE FOR YEARS. Will they need a cleaner, i doubt it, with all their mercenaries who clearly have only turned up for the dough, only time will tell.
Why else would any top class player leave top class teams and go to a third rate club...
Sir Alex, we trust your mistakes made over the time you have been No1 at OT so keep making them as you must be doing something right.

The small mentality showing up again. "We don`t care if we finish outside the top four, as long as we kane United in both games". You just can`t shake it off can you Ha Ha!!!
Lets spend billions on taking 6 points off the Champions Manchester United! It so damaged us last season didn`t it?
You really are a small club with a small mentality. I believe Adebayor has put in a transfer request and Bangor City are front runners!!

Diddums! What a plnoker you are Ferguson, your just rattled and envious of such financial clout. What he fails to remember is that even if City finish outside the top four it wont matter as long as we kane Utd in both games - that's the City faithful mentality. Oh and speaking of banners; 33 years hangs annoyingly on the stretford end, whats that all about........? Gloating, arrogant and errm pathetic. Get a life, get a personality even!
By pete.. Posted July 26 2009 at 6:40 AM.
Is Tevez your talisman? I think not! Yes we`re a little gutted he went to you (a little). only because no United fan wants a well liked player moving to the dark side.
I agree with all that Fergie says and to stick that billboard up does show a small mentality! We have 33 years etc up in our ground not all over Manchester.
City you are the Chav team of The Premier League.

The presures showing with Fergie. The last few weeks he keeps saying Man City will be no threat over and over again. Is he trying to convince hisself or the Man u guilible. And as for the Tevez sign we won't mind if he gets one saying welcome to Trafford. He could put a few players on the sign even how about Owen and Hargreaves with their walking sticks and say Neville Giggsand Scholes with their zimmer frames. You won't here any moans from MAN CITY FANS
By CliffL.. Posted July 26 2009 at 1:41 AM.
PMSL,
how it does it amuse to read about city fans thinking they are about to spoil it for everyone in the top four.
heard the same rubbish from villa fans last year.
the year before it was spurs fans.
this year its citehs turn.

It sickens me that my club, City has become everything that we hated about United. The money is ruining us, we have lost all our credibility and what's worst is that our fans have turned into the most hated and arrogant fans in the country. The sorry truth is that Manchester City Football Club ceased to exist when they tore down our beloved Maine Road and all we have done ever since is try to copy United's marketing and world wide appeal. It won't bother me in the slightest when the new owners up sticks and move the club to Dubai, after all we all know deep down that this was their plan all along. RIP Manchester City - I was City til you died.

Manchester City 1 Bacon Face 0
What a hoot, bacon gets rattled by a poster this is hilarious. (Should I remind him about the City banners they've had at Old Scaffold for the past few years?)
By biffa.. Posted July 26 2009 at 1:17 AM.
I'm sick of saying this till i'm (litrally) Blue in the face. City WILL be THE dominating force in european football in the years to come. Fergie and the rest hate this. He has spent 20 years making them the biggest club in the world. His time as manager there will be drawing to a close in the next few seasons. And hats off to him. As big an arse as he is. And of course he REALLY IS. He has achieved that task. So what must really knaw at him is that he wanted to retire and leave Utd in safe hands (probably Mark Hughes LOL) and see them Remain the biggest club in the world. He, Just like the rest of the worlds Major clubs know full well that with the Financial Backing City have, It is they who will rule. Not for a couple of seasons yet. But it will happen. The established top 4 coments are based in fear. The rest of the league are based in Envy.

All this Fergie bashing.. He has won more than any manager and is the king.. He is exactly correct in talking about City having a small club mentalit. All they talk about is United, and we do not care about them at all. You can have your 4 goal Tevez
By Lee.. Posted July 26 2009 at 1:06 AM.
Fergie - you are a hypocrite. You call Rafa contemptful for referring to Everton as a "small club" then you pull that out of the bag re: City?
So what? They put a poster up and it's a go at Utd? You've been doing it for years. If you can't take it, don't dish it out. Perhaps your just worried that it's very possible that in the next few years that City could be Manchester's premier team. Best speed up your retirement then.

ha ha...old bacon face is just showing his concern...he only says these things to teams that are a threat...he is clearly taking city seriously..!..but never mind...we'll errr..probably get relagated knowin city....tic..

Ferguson is right in a way , if Tevez wasnt happy at United with 4 strikers , how will he react against 8 strikers !!!

Uncle Alex the red faced clown is rattled big style.
Our aggressive in your face approach ignores the existing status quo of the top four perpetuated by Chimps league money and promoted without shame by SSN.
We are going to rip this down and build anew the top 4 are frightened, SSN are frightened by the change coming but that is thier problem not ours.
We have waited a long time to hurt the dark empire by insult, we are delighted its hitting home and we do not intend to pull any punch's so grab your tin hat Fergie this is only the start !
By Feed the Goat.. Posted July 25 2009 at 11:18 PM.
they, and the rest of the Sky4, are rattled. Their party is about to be spoiled.
By Karl.. Posted July 25 2009 at 11:27 PM.
I thought fergie was the ultra cool cookie i do believe hes rattled, lets see how they do this season without twinkle toes and king carlos
By mick.. Posted July 25 2009 at 11:24 PM.
Sir Alex makes a very good point, Spurs are probably more likely to push for the top4 than city tbf. City will always be in our shadow!!!1
By Ginners.. Posted July 25 2009 at 11:28 PM.
Fergie nothing but a slapped arse - he never got this worked up when Rafa had his rant
By dctid66.. Posted July 25 2009 at 11:33 PM.
Steve, United don't advertise about citys failure in the ground. It's a fans banner.
You do realise the difference don't you?
By Steve.. Posted July 25 2009 at 11:57 PM.
Haha fergie is right man city are a small club
Just because your owner has billions does not make you a big club. You class a big club based on profits not what the owner has
By Dan0.. Posted July 25 2009 at 11:55 PM.
fergie and man utd have no class or humility they will allways be bad losers especially fergie it was only a few weeks back they offred to buy carlos tevez for 25 million quid only for the player to say he was back home on holiday and he wanted to discuss it with his family and man utd released a statement saying the player had left well you can hardly blame the boy he has wanted to sign for utd since he went on loan for over 2 years only for fergie and utd showing no intrest in signing him up they wanted to get him for free by telling him to go behind his agents back through the european courts so they could save some money but the player showed loyalty to his agent kia who has known him since he was a kid and it backfired on fergie and the club big time especially as ronaldo was leaving and they came running back to tevez to sign him when they got desperate to please the fans and now they have ended up with micky owen a player past his best and injury prone and fergie is moaning about a billboard and man city being a small club maybe fergie should look at the man utd franchise and the 700 million pound debt that is killing the club in intrest each year instead of pointing the fingers at others just shows a complete lack of class and respect
By john,manchester.. Posted July 25 2009 at 11:53 PM.
is this the same fergie who had a go at benitez for calling everton a small club? idiot.
By JJ.. Posted July 26 2009 at 12:05 AM.
this great article just shows how scared united have become.. so thanks.
ferguson is pathetic, think he should retire soon before his stress becomes even worse when city are on top!!
watch out stretford!!!
By alex.. Posted July 26 2009 at 12:05 AM.
Your remarks Ferguson just show how childish and pathetic you are. If your not bothered, why comment?
Questioning City's mentality over the billboard Is a bit hypocritical coming from a club who advertise Citys failure to win trophys in the stretford end.
