So far the big-hitting American has resisted the temptation to unleash his driver and has opted for measured iron shots.
But it is his flatstick which is causing him a few problems.
Daly said: "It's been a rough couple of years with the putter but I am slowly getting it back. I'm pleased with the way I'm hitting the ball and giving myself some opportunities to make some birdies."
Elsewhere, Bryce Molder shot a stunning round of 67 with a bit of divine help.
The journeyman pro started the day in tied 53rd place but blasted his way into the top 10.
Molder's previous best showing at a major was tied 30th at the US Open in 2001 - but he made five birdies in tricky conditions.
He said: "I woke up and said a little prayer, just to help me enjoy the day.
"I was fighting my swing in the practice rounds but I slowly got it back in the right direction."
