RAFA BENITEZ and Martin O'Neill will go head-to-head again in a £20million battle for Ashley Young.

Aston Villa are bracing themselves for Liverpool's offer for England winger Young, although O'Neill has warned potential bidders to expect 'short shrift'.

That will not deter Kop boss Benitez, who is also on the verge of winning his fight to keep midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The lure of a Premier League title challenge and Champions League action at Anfield will be tough for Young to resist, especially in a World Cup season.

Benitez and O'Neill fought a bitter transfer war over Gareth Barry 12 months ago. The Villa boss frustrated Benitez on that occasion, when the Anfield board refused to meet the midfielder's £18m valuation.

This time Benitez can expect the funds to get his man, although Villa recently slapped a £30m price tag on the 24-year-old.

In another massive boost to Liverpool's title hopes, Alonso is ready to commit himself for another season.

Alonso WILL be part of the club's Far East tour having rejoined the squad ahead of a friendly in Vienna tonight.

Real Madrid had set a deadline of this weekend for a £27m transfer, but that will pass without a deal and they will not be encouraged to bid again.

Does anyone remember last season? whilst rafa was rotating and experimenting systems we were droping points to lesser teams, hull, stoke, middlesborough.
Benayoun came in and scored goals and give us some shape.
The more he played the better the team got.The only player that can be justified is David Villa, look at the possibilities we have 4-4-2, or, if torres is injured, Villa can handle playing up top on his own.
We don't need silva or young, lets keep the side together and add a quality player.
I am glad man u signed Owen cause he is going to be injured all the time and cost them points. he ain't going to be a thorn in our sides he is still liverpool throu and throu

By tiger. Posted August 2 2009 at 1:18 AM.

a cheap and a good replacement for alonso if he does go is van der vaart. real madrid said he could go for around 10million. he's much better than barry.
and we have the money for hime because dossenna is going napoli for 4.3m, arbeloa has gone to madrid for 3.5m and leto has gone for 3.5m.

xabi alonso handed in a transfer request i heard.

they shud involve hunterlaar in the deal. hunterlaar and van der vaart plus 6million shud be enough.

By shuaib. Posted July 30 2009 at 12:25 PM.

this will be a great signing for liverpool becuase we need a better winger and u cant get better then young plus when we donr get him riera will be on the bench and we need a better bench

Dream on Rafa - you can't afford him, and your dodgy yank owners aren't going to borrow more money.

Hi there,
Not sure that this is true:), but thanks for a post.

Young will be a good buy if it is around 15mn. At 20mn he will be just another Keane.I hope Rafa will not be ridiculed again by O'Neill. That 5-0 trashing was sweet for all Liverpool fans. If Liverpool is going to splash silly money on players which seems to be the case these days, then invest on Silva and or Villa. If we are going for English players.then Joe Cole and/or Walcott will be the best choice.By the way there can never be another Barnes or Rush.I hope Liverpool will win the title this coming season otherwise i am going to stop watching EPL games altogether!!!!!

By David Seah. Posted July 20 2009 at 11:14 AM.

young is a left winger, kuyt is a right winger. i would say both of these players are good at what they do. i would say that young should not be costing 20 million to buy, he should be a bit cheaper than that, but due to the inflation in prices during this transfer market i feel 20 million is a reasonably good deal. if the price thrown around is any more than that then its just becoming a joke.

By kiddy. Posted July 20 2009 at 8:54 AM.

Kuyt - 12 goals - 9 assists
Young - 7 goals - 9 assists

should Young be worth more than Kuyt then?

By john. Posted July 20 2009 at 2:59 AM.

There are so many different ways in which adding silva could improve the tactical advantages for the team. even if we were not able to get any new strikers.

getting both young and silva would be even better, but thats not really realistic. before the begining of the transfer market opened i thought to myself who would improve the liverpool team. these players were david silva and tevez but obviously the latter wont be happening so i would be glad if we bought david silva and stopped at that and went out and worked hard to try and win the league.

so basically all those newbs who think they know it all because they are too busy thinking about what has already happened need to start looking at what is going to happen next.

i.e how even unlikely a transfer is to happen there is always a chance it will happen, don't forget that cos im only letting you know once.!!!

By kiddy. Posted July 20 2009 at 1:44 AM.

Ive been a liverpool fan for a long time and i know my stuff. the liverpool team are like a family that work there socks off, even when things dont look so good. i say that ashley young would be a great addition to the team. he has great skill, pace, is young and english. what more could you ask for in a player?

If we were able to get him he would provide an additional dimension to the liverpool squad. but i think liverpool getting him is still a long shot.

so many of you seem to be talking about liverpools lack of money. but did you forget that the american owners have sold off their assets to give liverpool some much needed cash. i admit most of this cash will be used towards refinancing the loan for the new stadium. but there should also be some left to buy players.

The players we need are another good attacking midfielder and a striker that can be relied upon to score goals. An ideal midfielder would be silva, because we could have a 4,4,1,1 with obviously gerrard supporting torres up front with silva in midfield supporting gerrard and torres with reira on the left kuyt on the right and alonso pulling the strings. Then whenever need without even bringing a player of the bench we could go to a 4,4,2 with kuyt as a striker with torres up front, silva going on the right and gerrard going more into a midfield position supporting torres and kuyt.

I have always had a great respect for Liverpool
fans over the years.Terrific Support of their team and always seemed to be fairminded. But from some of the rant here,it looks like some of the new gereration support, would appear to have adopted
the plastic Manure supporters attitude of God like superiority.Young is a good player, but hopefully he will stay at Villa as they are a decent team, and need to keep there good players. And I as that as a Spurs man.Hope more of the decent Liverpool supporters come on here for some sensible comment.

By brian. Posted July 20 2009 at 12:40 AM.

i think asley young should come to mancherster united and he said he will rather join mancherster united than liverpool

By kalid. Posted July 19 2009 at 11:02 PM.

dont know why liverpool would even consider paying are only bit of transfer funds on young good play no better than reirra who i thought was one of the reasons we came closer to the title last season he gave us the width we needed and cut in well money needs to go on a striker in the mould of judas owen a keane like player villa if we got him would complete a very strong team aslong as we keep mash and alonso with his arival think were the best team on the planet best front men best midfeild solid defense and top class keeper if villa cost 50mil pay it reap the rewards come what MAY

By lee moor. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:06 PM.

When Villa paid Watford £9m for Young I thought that was stupid money for potential. I haven't seen any great progression in this footballer to merit valuations ranging from £20m-£30m. He may be worth £9m now due to having had the premiership experience. We really shouldn't be looking at £9m players

By Gary the Red. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:16 PM.

Sell pennant, degen, voronin, plesis, riera... thats will get us around 12 millions....
add only: 8 milions = 20 million and buy YOUNG, Alonso and Masterano to stay...
da best team we'll get...

By Cshan5. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:10 PM.

I'd give Villa 50 mil if they would take Lucas!

By laura. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:00 PM.

IM A LFC FAN ITS GREAT READING ALL OTHER FANS COMMENTS ABOUT RAFA AND LFC IT JUST PROVES HOW JELOUS YOU ALL ARE OF OUR RICH HISTORY OUR FABULAS SUPPORTERS ON THE KOP EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT MAN UTD FANS HAVE SHORT MINDS THEY CRYED AND WAITED 26 YEARS FOR TITLE

By S WILTON. Posted July 19 2009 at 7:48 PM.

young to liverpool would be a great signing however a few changes would need to be made first for everything to work.

voronin out and let babel play where he wants - up front. we all know he has amazing potential and would fit the role of the extra striker we so badly need.

dossena out and let aurellio and insua battle it out for the left back role. especially now weve just bought a new young left back in mavinga.

degen out he must have made about 7 apperances last season - just a complete waste of space.

and if we are to keep alonso and mascherano and maybe the signing of silva too and the team will be perfect and we'll have the depth that we need to win the title.

BUY ROBBEN U AVIN A LAF 1 KICK AND HE DISSAPPEARS

By john edwards. Posted July 19 2009 at 6:30 PM.

Liverpoolrule - it don't take much to get you wannabes reacting, if Young really wants to progress his career Liverpool is not the place. In England there is only one place and thats Man U - sorry but it's true. Whilst I don't support either of these teams it is a fact. The key factor will be money whilst I believe Rafa is capable of spending big and bringing talent in, there is still the doubt about his spending. If Liverpool are to attract Young they are going to need to spend more than the quoted £20m but I am afraid like last year with Barry I think it will be a fruitless summer for all 'pool fans.

By Derek. Posted July 19 2009 at 5:51 PM.

This story seems to have come out of nowhere - firstly Liverpool are supposed to be skint with even Rafa claiming that there would be no more big money signings this year. With Liverpool constantly linked to David Silva, now it appears Chris Bascombe has enlightened us to the Ashley Young story. Good story, and nice if it happened, but cant see it. With Alonso apparently now staying at Anfield (according to Bascombe), where will Liverpool get the money to sign Ashley Young....am I missing something? Bascombe is a scouser and a liverpool fan, so maybe he is creating a bit of unrest for Young to get "his man". Benitez is apparently not that keen on Riera, so if there is any truth in this story it will be Riera who would lose out. Personally I think Young would be a good aquisition to the squad, he is young, talented and quick, and excellent with his assists...and he scores a few too! But will it happen?.......I very much doubt it. I cant help thinking we missed a trick by not signing Owen on a free.....no doubt that will come back to haunt us this season!

By andrew. Posted July 19 2009 at 5:30 PM.

lets get some facts right, if you are going to make a joke, get what you are saying correct, villa did win in 1994 wel done but, if you look closer villa also won in 1996 the same cup against leeds. barry is a first class player but also a gold digger traded in cl football for money. player with ambition!!!!!!!. rafa is as bad as redknapp, skeeming old and fat. villa is not a selling club we dont need the money for players we proved that last summer ( barry saga) young and villa wont be held to ransom. stop disrupting players. liverpools year is it? you say the same every season, getting boring now. try and get your heads out the clouds and come to the real world.

By adam . Posted July 19 2009 at 4:35 PM.

ITS time for him to move on. Villa are going nowhere fast and Young needs to look forward not backwards. Villa? oh well, its a team that will do well get stay in the EPL yr in yr out.

Young must go. No point staying at a club with LIMITED progression.

By david. Posted July 19 2009 at 4:27 PM.

Can i bring this back to the actual story and just quote a few facts

1. Ashley Young does play left wing and not right wing so if and its a big if, he ever did come to Liverpool he would not be replacing Kuyt

2. Aston Villa have the smallest squad in the league and they do not have dozens of millions to make their squad bigger and i believe they would have got 4th place last year if they had a bigger squad

3. Therefore Aston Villa need to spend their budget wisely to make their squad bigger and better and not buy "squad" players to fill up the bench but buy players to will slot straight into the 1st team 11

4. No one is going to move clubs this year to sit on a bench when any top class footballer wants to play in the world cup next year

5. And this is my biggest point that no one has seemed to mention. Aston Villa have just paid 12 million for a left winger in Stewart Downing, who happens to want to play in the world cup next year. Do you really think Stewart would have moved to Villa without guarantees in a world cup year that he wont be just sitting on a bench

6. So I do see Young leaving Villa and the papers are rarely wrong so i hope it is to Liverpool but i dont see him at Villa in a world cup year fighting for the same left wing place in his club team and national team

By Scouser Chris. Posted July 19 2009 at 4:17 PM.

I don't know why people get wound up into arguements on here, it's quite simple. Martin O'neill has said Ashley young is not for sale, simple as! The press just need something to write in this case so the scousers get all excited and buy the papers. It's not happening just like Barry didn't because Liverpool can't afford him anyway regardless of the fact he's not for sale.

By Si. Posted July 19 2009 at 1:20 PM.

Keep all existing players but bring in a recognised striker in case Torres is not available to play for whatever reasons, LFC will be champions, I bet.

We need no more players but a stikers, simple as that.

By nanda gurung. Posted July 19 2009 at 1:16 PM.

Yeh! What ever Rafa planned, he has to make sure the first eleven red team will be ready for the goal and win in style. Next season, The Reds must different than the previous, coz the legend Daglish will assist Rafa so that the routation system didn't back step Liverpool eyeing for the crown in EPL.

By zsem. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:44 PM.

can u people stop saying that young wont get in the side ahead of kuyt. if any of u had brains youd realise that he bloody plays on the left not the right. the people hes ahead of is riera, babel, benayoun; and added bonus he's english. perfect player and at the right price. also wait to see him as a starter in every england game in world cup finals

lfc to sell alonso in 20mill deal plus sneijder.

By 99rs88. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:37 PM.

I think he has served his apprenticeship with a mid table club it is time to move to a top four team. He needs to be playing Championship Football to progress to the next stage of is development and be a first choice international player. He will not develop under Martin O'Neil who has held back players like Guppy, Lennon and Heskey. Young needs to move if he is to be regarded as a first class international

By David S. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:38 PM.

liverpool can try but young is going nowhere and the blue nose who thinks villa are not the biggest club in brum dream on blues will never match villa back to the championship for you next season

By villamick. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:07 PM.

A few points to consider and discuss further.
Most of you are missing the fact that Liverpool need more English players in the squad for Champs league rules.
Last year Barry claimed he wanted Champs league football yet goes to Man City, obviously because of money not immediate football ambition.
Benitez did not want Crouch to leave but he wanted more regular football, he wont go back to Liverpool to be back up to Torres.
Im sure Liverpool would love to have Villa, but he is going to cost 40 mill plus and they dont have that sort of cash.
As has been shown this closed season and previously, not many players have loyalty and why should they. They are working people and if they can get more money going to work for a competitor then why shouldn't they, most of us would. Also which clubs always show loyalty to players, they decide when they want to sell them and most of they time do not consider whether that player has shown loyalty to the club in the past.
Young would be a good buy for Liverpool, its a squad game. Man U and Chelsea have far more depth to theirs than Liverpool and the Gunners, which is where the gap needs closing, Lpool and Gunners both have first 11's which can compete with most teams in europe.

By Keith. Posted July 19 2009 at 11:30 AM.

Villa have said he isn't for sale. End of story. If you deluded scousers even believe for half a minute that he would leave Villa for you lot then you've got more problems than I ever realised!

By Mick. Posted July 19 2009 at 11:38 AM.

I had hi hopes for Babel last season, but since his arrival he hasn't established himself... His first touch is so poor and the amount of fouls he gives away.....

I would rather sell Babel and buy in Young, Good first touch and a very good crosser of the ball.... worth 20m and he will be one of the 5 home grown players.....

By Kevin Lamb. Posted July 19 2009 at 11:25 AM.

is he going to play him with barry hahaha dream on fat boy and all you southern gloryhunters thought you be man city fans by now

By clario. Posted July 19 2009 at 11:14 AM.

villa are a selling club so young will go , now the blues are back in the prem there not even the biggest club in brum !!!!!!!!!!!

By johnny boy. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:50 AM.

Ok this whole rotation issue with Rafa has to stop. Aston Villa used the least players in the prem last season - 21. The next lowest was Liverpool who used 23. So can someone please explain how Rafa "rotates" too much???

By IanD. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:37 AM.

Although i think young is a quality plsyer i feel he is too similar to babel who cant get in the starting xi. We also need more striking options, maybe martins at newcastle would be a good choice?

By shortfuse. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:38 AM.

In response to Chris (Lemington Spa)
Last season premier league player stats
Kuyt - 12 goals - 9 assists
Young - 7 goals - 9 assists
Sorry who was the better player?

I rest my case and you have just bought Downing Your best hopes of a top 10 finish Hahahaha

By Matt. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:35 AM.

Young will be a great signing. He is young and has great potential. He has pace and will help torres to get more goals next season. I think we also need to sign david silva and negredo or lavezziz, then the Liverpool squad will be complete and we will be able to win the Premiership. Mascherano should be sold but Alonso should stay.

By Liverpoolrule . Posted July 19 2009 at 10:29 AM.

Derek, you're talking nonsense. " Rafa didn't have a clue how to play him " ......er, up front ? That's where he played as far as I could see. The guy simply didn't put his chances away, and the reason he supposedly looks in better form for Spurs is they create less chances, therefore he's seen to be missing less. He scored 5 goals in 16 starts for Liverpool, and 5 in 14 starts for Spurs. Wow. Look at him now.....haha. Anyone can look good in an average team, but put them in a team that challenges for honours, and they either step up, or show their limitations. Just like Keane did. And as for rotation being the problem, he was involved in 19 out of the 23 league games played before he moved. Hardly benchwarming. Rafa may have made that mistake in the early days of Torres, but he recognised that he needed, and here's the key 2 words, " in form " players on the pitch. Keane never was. The only mistake Liverpool made was bringing him in in the first place. Young would do very well at Liverpool. And he wouldn't get burned out and be useless in the last 2 months of the season like he was at Villa.

By Bobby Chariot. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:27 AM.

All you Liverpool fans saying he won't get in ahead of Kuyt are clearly not football followers. Young plays on the left and Kuyt plays on the right!!! Young will be better than Silva! Why? he is already proven in the premiership and he is ENGLISH so if we could buy for £20 million then i agree with the buy although he is similar to Babel. YNWA

By Matt Brodie. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:19 AM.

What a crock...

By Sid. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:24 AM.

Fools, get it in your thick skulls, Barry left because he had one year left on his contract, Man City offered him big bucks and a promise. Get used to it even the mighty pool cant compete with that. Ash is under contract give us 30+ million or chuff off. We do not need to sell and like last year with Barry you will be told to foxtrot oscar. It really makes me laugh how you waller in your own self importance and think that you can sign who ever you want. It doesnt work like that surely the lesson last year demonstrates that or would you like to embarrass yourselves again. Even if he wanted to move Ash is a professional he will play out his contract or until a daft offer which we cant refuse is made.

By Harris. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:23 AM.

Young might work.I believe his pace and goalscoring ability will assist us. We need Alonso and Silva too..I believe that we will be stronger this season if we keep Alonso. Its not superstars that win but a team that gels that win..just like the team of the 70's and 80's..that team became legendary because they worked well together.Good Luck for tonight Lads..winning starts with the small and unimportant games.

By Carlo Naidoo Florida South Africa. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:55 AM.

Ashley Young is never worth 20 million, he doesn't deliver enough and is a mix between Lennon at Spurs who is quick but crap with the ball and Ryan Babel who we already have who isn't consistent enough and will never hold a place down. Don't waste mony on people like that Rafa we have Kuyt who did a great job last year and then focus efforts on making sure that Babel who does have the potential comes good consistently because with him its confidence and not competance. save mony and buy another classy forward to support Torres. For me Ibrahimovich

By Chocky. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:11 AM.

Would bea great signing for liverpool to buy Young. Then we'd have kuyt for back up who is now 30.
Liverpool would also buy Silva following the sale of mashcerano and we would then buy van der vaart or lassana diarra to fill his place. Great season for liverpool. Also lucas to be sold and either huddlestone, cattermole noble or michael johnson to be as a replacement. Albert Riera and arbeloa to stay as back up. Ngog and Dossena to also be sold

RAFAEL RAFAEL BENITEZZ!!!

By SAJAN DHANDA. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:58 AM.

ok red eyed liverpool supporters lets get a few fact right here,
1, you lost barry because you never came up with the funds, rafa was trying to get him on the cheap, rafa asked £10m for scott carson off villa, then sold him to west brom for £3m
3, to be fair you lost the league not man utd won it, rafa rested players against the so called easy teams at home and payed the price,
4, i now think liverpool will win league this season

By chriso. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:58 AM.

Hope that Ashley stays at villa park,he is a fantastic player! I cant see this transfer going thru, mainly because pool are skint, but if xabi goes, then maybe. But why would rafa pay 30m for a midfielder, young likes the ball to feet, and pool are known for the long ball. Go for crouchie rafa,he suits your style of play perfectly!!

By VillaGibbs. Posted July 19 2009 at 10:06 AM.

liverpools year is every yeat why go to liverpool where he would end up on the bench, get burgaled and have a fat spanish waiter to deal with...dirty scousers scum of merseyside een tho most of your fans are from down south.

mata and silva and a gud left bk wud complete liverpool squad

By stefan. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:37 AM.

It makes me laugh all these Liverpool fans urging players to join them, why would any player who wants to play in World Cup join them this year? As spending 50% of your time on the bench won't give them enough playing time. It could be a step backwards for a player with ambition as Rafa's rotation tactics seem to effect more players negatively than possitively. Look at Robbie Keane, Rafa didn't have a clue how to play him and put him back by a couple of years, he then goes to a club and manager that know what to do and look at him now. If Young does leave then he needs to go to Man U or abroad as a player of his talent and potential needs to be tested to the max, not getting splinter in his backside due to mis-management. If honours is what he wants then Man U will challenge for honours year in year out not once every 20 years.

By Derek. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:29 AM.

Forget Young, Silva can play both wings and behind the striker. Plus he is worth 20 million!

By richie . Posted July 19 2009 at 9:26 AM.

Young come to pool.u will stand a chance to play in champs league & WORLD CUP& would be worshiped by us "the world's best fans".

jokers you aint got the money didnt have it for barry aint got it for young were on earth are you going to get 30 million ......maybe a mass giro collection,is it your year again same old same old.

By paul. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:20 AM.

would be great to see young at pool but cnt c it happening, firstly i dnt think we have the money to buy young who wud prob cost us bout £25/30m secondly Rafa wud much rather bring in silva he's been a long term target of rafa's

By dal. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:16 AM.

30 million. Don't make me laugh.

By Rob H. Posted July 19 2009 at 9:10 AM.

Villa are just a tiny club that were getting so excited last year coz they thought they were getting champs league, then you went all quiet and turned on your best player. You're just jealous saying that we lost out on Gareth Barry and to be honest i'm glad coz he's not good enough to even sit next to Alonso, and that WE have champs league football. Oh yeah and do you really think Ashley will want another 5-0 thrashing again HAHA!!! Ashley you know where you wanna come next season and the prem is in the bag. Hey maybe even Birmingham will beat you next you next season HAHA. YNWA

By elnino. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:53 AM.

Young is a good player and needs to join a top 4
club, which Villa will never be under MON.However
it's no good getting involved in another Barry affair
again.MON claims to have the players interest at heart.Wonder why Barry eventually left anyway?

By Dave. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:52 AM.

By John Lickley. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:57 AM.

Will somebody please just buy him. Watford have a nice sell-on clause and we need the dosh. 30 million sounds about right. And then we could tell that cherry-picker at Reading to forget about Tommy Smith.

By Jake S.. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:43 AM.

I am a Liverpool fan it this does not make sense really. Whilst Young is a good player he would not get into the side ahead of Kuyt who scored an impressive tally from right mid last season. Maybe if he did come then on the left but I dont think we need him.

By Matt. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:43 AM.

Thanks for the great start to the morning with a LOL about this ridiculous, fantasy story.

And why would Ash want to move to the Merseyside area and increase his chances of burglary.

By dekatee. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:29 AM.

WTF!!!!!! for 20 million we could buy a footballer.

What's young ever done to be rated at 20 million?

Does he dive and get penalties like ronaldo?

I thought it was april 1st when I read this stupidity story.
For 20 million we could buy a proper footballer like david villa, or even silva.
Rafa take off the waiters coat and buy a footballer.

By bonnythescouser. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:26 AM.

If Young moves on it will just prove that he is another un-grateful player that villa churned out. O'neil took a gamble on him when every one said that 9.5 million was too much for a player of his standard. He gave him the chance to shine which got him the international recognition and status that he has now. We players who are commited to the club and the manager. He only has to look accross the pitch to Milner to see a commited professional. If o'neil told milner to go in goal he would and do a better job than most of the other keepers in the prem. If he went it would be a blow. But it will be fun to watch him try and get in to a team that can't find a place for Ryan Babel who is exactly the same player.

Exactly why would Ashley Young want to stay at Villa?!

They are not exactly splashing the cash on players and have no hope now Spurs are back and Man City are spending the Arab Pound all over the place.

Come on Ashley, you know it makes sense!

By Rob. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:08 AM.

Benitez the clown needs to be SACKED NOW!!!! Who is this Ashley Young clown??? We don't need players like that. All we need to do is buy two strikers and thats it. We need to buy Crouch and Villa. That would be the league dun and dusted.

By Neil. Posted July 19 2009 at 8:01 AM.

How many times does MON have to say that he is not for sale! Get used to it! He isn't going anywhere!

By Carp Journalism. Posted July 19 2009 at 7:54 AM.

Hahahahahaha, here they come AGAIN!!! the team which say every season this is gonna be our year!! well well benny you tried with Barry and he'd rather have the loot than your football OR even holding his mates hand in midfield (scared to leave Gerrard)
Young aint going nowhere at least not the pool, so calm down clam down, now go easy this season pool cause you might just win something!!!!! AS IF

Young in a different class!!!!

By MoN. Posted July 19 2009 at 6:49 AM.

Sounds unlikely. Young will leave Villa and move to a big club next year after the WC and get the CL football he deserves. O'Neill will never break into the top 4 as a manager because although he's good motivator's a good judge of a player, he's tactically inept. His record in the CL and against United is ample demonstration of that fact.

By Richard Byrne. Posted July 19 2009 at 6:06 AM.

you wont get ash just like you never got barry
i can tell you now this year he wont move because it is a world cup year and while he is playing all the games with us he stands a chance of going if he plays for u he wont go yeh tought choice
play for u not in wc or play for us and go to wc
sorry but he is staying with us u los again

By geoff. Posted July 19 2009 at 5:36 AM.

lets be honest, would you stay villa most overrated team in the league,

When was last time villa won anything 1994? laughing stocks, poor little club

By Deadly Doug. Posted July 19 2009 at 2:51 AM.

- "theres more chance Villa signing Messi than Liverpool signing Young" what..? that makes no sense. think before you write moron. martin "harry potter" O'neill will start crying again like he did with barry.

By TONY SOPRANO. Posted July 19 2009 at 1:54 AM.

theres more chance Villa signing Messi than Liverpool signing Young... You can have Salifou instead....

By Juan Pablo. Posted July 19 2009 at 1:05 AM.

Ashley Young or David Silva? Hmm, tough choice.

By Steve. Posted July 19 2009 at 1:05 AM.

Young needs to move to a big club now and he knows it. villa had their chance last season and they blew it, now they will be behind the big 4,spurs, man city and everton. villa can only attract average english players. gerrard and torres or heskey and downing, tough decison ashley!!!!!!!

By Gambino. Posted July 19 2009 at 1:02 AM.

Trust me, there is more chance of Dalglish pulling his boots on again than there is of Ashley Young joining Liverpool. He sees Villa as a team on the up and knows it'll only take one season missing out the top 4 for Liverpool's built on a deck of cards house to come crumbling down. And you can put your house on it!

By Inside Knowledge. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:46 AM.

Young would complete the already great Liverpool team!

By Paco. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:47 AM.

An injured Stewart Downing for 12 million quid? I thought Lerner was going to bankroll your place in the coveted 'big four'?

Villa are a joke and all the posturing from O'Neil and their deluded fans about how big they once were won't change that.

Young is hugely overrated and worth 15 million tops.

By Lucky Charm. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:34 AM.

He wouldn't fit in well at Liverpool, seeing as Gerrard HAS to take all the free-kicks, penalties, throw ins and goal kicks (probably). If Young went to Liverpool he'd be told to get the ball to Gerrard at all times, which would waste Young's best creative attributes, and i don't think he's known for his defensive skills. He'd just be another Pennant and end up on loan next season.

By Coley. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:32 AM.

rather go buy robben from madrid cheaper get him for half the price still young and very good

By t henry. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:29 AM.

dream on scousers, like last year you've got no chance, besides you aint got the dough to compete....lol

By pikey villa. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:18 AM.

Never going to happen and it will need to be alot more that 20 Mill at least 30 Mill. Benitez has already said no more big signings this season you spent your budget on Glen Johnson.

By Iain Sherriff. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:17 AM.

the only way we will sign ashley young is if we sell xabi alonso first.

By JJ. Posted July 19 2009 at 12:06 AM.

The Times, Daily Mail and NOTW all have different versions of the Alonso story. However, it must be remembered that it was Bascombe who first said that Johnson would sign for Liverpool-at a time when most other newspapers were reporting that he would go to Chelsea. It was also Bascombe who broke the story about Mascherano's partner being homesick-a story yet to be disproved. I think we should give Bascombe the benefit of the doubt.

Yes!
This lad has Liverpool legend written all over him.
He is top draw and all proper Liverpool fans from all over the world, know this and have discussed this lad at length. He's perfect for our team.
John Barnes mk2, and the Kop will love this kid forever like Barnsey.
No team would be able to handle Gerrard Torres and Young, plus Glenn Johnson, Kuyt, Yossi, Babel, Riera supplying the bullets next season.
Welcome aboard Ashley, you are about to become one of the biggest, most famous players on the planet when you sign for us lad. Unlike other clubs, Liverpool fans will worship the ground you walk on. Love it!

By davey red. Posted July 18 2009 at 11:49 PM.

Haha, as if we needed any more evidence of Bascombe's lack of insider knowledge these days. I'm sure his minions on TLW will be cracking one off mind.

Poor. 2/10.
