The Barcelona striker told club president Joan Laporta he'd be leaving the Nou Camp just hours before City ended their interest.
That left Manchester United with a clear run at the Cameroon international and they are ready to offer him a four-year deal on £150,000-a-week
Eto'o is also seeking more money based on appearances and goals.
Agent Jose Maria Masalles said: "At 28 he wants to join a club which will give him another chance of winning trophies.
"It can't be just about money. It has to be about the sporting project."
United will make it clear they will not be kept waiting and will not increase their offer.
City offered £25m plus £180,000-a-week wages after tax but did not like the player's delaying tactics.

Dear Sir Alex, why was Barcelona better than ManU during the UCL finals? and how did Barcelona marched on to win the treble ? Yes their style of play ! Whether it was eto, karem or that hyped-up maradona son-in-law, putting them into ManU does not mean our play will become devastating creative with goals galore overnight. Therefore buying these overpriced egoistic players who don't guarantee UCL or EPL success, should not be priority. Please Sir Alex, kindly review our style of attacking play with technically good midfielders who can received balls dead at their feet; who don't give balls away cheaply; who can dribble and draw out defenders; who don't cause break in attack initiative by passing the ball back to the defenders/ goalie; who are capable of shooting at goal outside the box. Kindly review our way of clearing the ball when under attack; can our players turn a clearance into a pass to a team-mate instead of blindly heading or booting away to the opponent. Possession > open up spaces > accurate passes > unselfish shots at goal. Is the present team capable of doing all these yet?... before we bring in new attackers who cannot turn our style of play better or even on par with Barcelona ! ManU attacking play is a joy to watch but beef up the midfield department with technically creative players should be the priority.

Et'oo is the best striker, he has been to two World Cups! recently played in the finals of a Confederation cup, won 2 African Nations Cups with his Country, has an Olympic gold medal in Sidney , All time highest goal scorer in the African Nation Cup and the spanish league. The truth is he will score more goals than Tevez or ronaldo.

Eto is not worth for ManU
He should go just to Liverpool then he will got success

Sir Alex is just a genius,an expert at maximising returns on any footballing talent. He is known to resurrect careers long believed to be beyond redemption. He is assembling his own potent galacticos at far less than half the price it is costing the famed Real Madrid. With the addition of Eto'o, Owen and Valencia, we are back in the CL finals for the third year running. Go Man U!

I dream with Messi, but unfortunatelly unreachable. Therefore Eto'o is the alternative: 25 goals per season... who can sign this? Look for a new dest for Berbatov and Eto'o will deliver the goals we need

By nickybabe3.. Posted July 13 2009 at 12:16 AM.
Lion hearted Eto likes tough challenging jobs. Buy SAF and let BArca pray never to play MANU.A very strong personality on speed legs. Roony, ETo AND co . CAnt wait for the excitement to start.

i love Eto and he is a great player, he is good for united but i dont really trust sir alex because he can also dump him at the end of the day just like he did to yorke, andy cole, van, beck, rossi, deigo folan, carlos tavis,so Eto should go to man city and win more for them.

Sir Alex get Costa and Kun. Eto is good but will be playing in nations cup
By Durban Poison.. Posted July 12 2009 at 7:57 PM.
Hmmm I'm not sure about this one! Very good striker but I think he has many personal problems and I dont see him as a typical UNITED player. I would be happy to have him as SAF could sort him out but i'd rather have Aguero all day long! So young, so tallented, and is versatile! In Fergie we trust...!
By Nick Nicolaou.. Posted July 12 2009 at 7:34 PM.
no way, we need a type of player we don't have, the ideal player for us is an imaginitive, fast goalscorer!! eto is a goal getter but not all that imaginitive. we need Kun Aguero, an extremely fast player who scares every defence he plays against! he is just a better faster version of tevez!! he scored nearly 20 goals in la liga last season in a team with a lot less quality service than eto at barca!! he ofers the speed of eto but also alot more creative play which will create goals for other players, something that is not eto's forte!! also i feel berba will strt to live up to his reputation this season, with the shadow of ronaldo lifted off the team. aguero, rooney and berba with owen off the bench, absolute quality. finally the new signing obertan looks exteremly gd, if a bit unnurtured!! ferguson will mould him into another man utd world beater!!
By zach.. Posted July 12 2009 at 6:53 PM.
he is best finisher

i totally agree with marcel..eto'o absolute class but let's not be held to ransom by him or barca..also sign up costa, tht lad is going to be a great...maybe aguero as well, bright future
By tyronk.. Posted July 12 2009 at 1:36 PM.
I am appauled by some of the comments. As someone say, Eto'o is simply the best striker in the world but unfornately he is not called Samuel Eto'odinho or Samuel Eto'o James or Samuel Eto'o Johnson. He is Samuel Eto'o Fils and should be one of the ...highest paid players in the game. But he is not. Yet, he is still committed and is just the best. He DESERVES to be treated with respect.
i am not too sure what mike means by greed....so where do you place the terry's, lampards, coles, etc who are frankly ridiculously overpriced and are constantly getting unjust pay rises every season...contract renewals?
By Cameroon4ETo'o.. Posted July 12 2009 at 2:11 PM.

By martyn.. Posted July 12 2009 at 1:40 PM.
Eto is at the top of his game and he is a prolific striker that can deliver the goals in the ranks of Thierry Henry and the likes. SAF should go for him he can deliver 25 goals in a season.

By andy c.. Posted July 12 2009 at 12:05 PM.
Eto'o would be a great addition for United but Fergie must offload Berbatov so that we can rely on Rooney, Owen and Eto'o as first option strikers, while Macheda and Welbeck will be backups. I think an attacking trident of Rooney,Owen, Eto'o will pose problems for any defense in the world. What we need now is a quality playmaker to provide those excellent passes for the forwards. If Eto'o is not fortunate to come to United then Fergie must focus on Rooney and Owen as the twin strikers, while the Nani, Anderson, Carrick, Antonio Valencia will control the midfield. For the defense, Evra, Vidic,Ferdinand, Brown will marshal it while Van der Sar will keep the goal. Berbatov should never be first choice ever at United this season. If Fergie had allowed Berbatov to fight for his plance instead of being it on a silver platter he would know what it is to play for Manchester United. Tevez fought for his place and knew what it was to be a Man U player. I hope Fergie does the right things this season becuz Man U must reclaim the Champions League which must be a top priority this season. When is Owen Hargreaves coming back? I hope he makes a return becuz he's a quality midfielder that United miss a lot against Barca. Had Hargreaves and Wes Brown played against Barca, United would have been the first team to retain the CL since AC Milan did. The best to United.
By Siebo.. Posted July 12 2009 at 12:08 PM.
very good player will deliver with goals getting on now at nearly 30 .if you follow spanish football you will know he is a problematic player on the pitch, off the pitch worst still he will divide players during training , between matches and inside the changing rooms

LOL...all these bitter Wastelands fans calling Eto'o a City reject?...NO!, what he has said all along is that he'll go to City for the money just to get away from Barca, but would much rather go to one of the top clubs in the world like United and would be happy to take less money...WTF!!
Money is no replacement for class and heritage you sad bitter blues!! LOL
By Sherms.. Posted July 12 2009 at 11:49 AM.
Eto'o has scored more than 100goals in less than 150games for barca...who can beat that. he may be 28(Owen is older) but if he is that good & available, he should be signed. As for the money, he is like all of us, a pay rise is always welcome. However he has honour too which is why he wants to play at a top club & is reluctant to join a non CL, Europa club...
Berbatov is superb, lets just give him time to adjust not to mention that is probably the only one left in United that makes the game beautiful to watch when he has the ball...anyhow, united attacks a lot and a player like eto'o will always get the goals because of that.
but all that said, i hate it when newspapers make up nonsense to get us reading them...this story better have some truth in it!
By tony.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:47 AM.
to old and wouldnt be worth 25milon united should buy aguero twice the player and has a huge future in the game

Let us pray for Sir AlexAlex Ferguson is still the manager of Manchested United he knows what he is doing, Sir please clean out the midfield and splash some serious cash in that area , we are poor in midfield , even a blind could see that , Sir our hope is with you, I wish you the best in the comming seson
By Patrick Williams.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:53 AM.
iter ronaldo think eto will be a good signing. after ronaldo's departure we need a striker that can guarantee at least 25goals if you add that with what we expect from rooney, berbatov and occasionally owen we should be able to compete both at home and in europe.also, we need to strenghten our midfield, what is happening to hargreaves?
By jimmy.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:57 AM.
I hope we do not get Eto, we should spend the money on Ageuro, Ashley Young, and Huntelaar, 90m, job done, a decent left winger, another magician who can play up front or attacking midfielder, and a striker for cover when Rooney breaks his foot, and lol at the man city fans saying Eto is a man city reject, erm no he delayed it deliberatly because he didnt want to join you, this is a big boys game, and im sorry, that doesnt include you, why dont you go after someone a bit more realistic,, paul devlin maybe???
By Jay.. Posted July 12 2009 at 11:32 AM.
with scholes giggs neville an van da sar soon to depart it will be a re build for united with some impossible to replace eto is quality no doubt can see 2 more seasons in taggart an he will walk away when they finish tenth haha
By blueboy.. Posted July 12 2009 at 11:12 AM.
As a Blue I dont mind Etoo going to OT. I believe that we will still be strong enough to give the Big 4 a run especially if we are up there in january when we go in the market again...
You should be asking the question ...
What now Berbatov? back to WHL>>????

Two weeks ago the NOTW reported that Man City would sign both Et'o and Tevez that week.
Last week they reported that Tevez would have the Man City deal completed by Wednesday.
Now this week, after their 'Et'o to City exclusive, they're saying Et'o will join United.
Forgive me if I don't hold my breath.
By GF.. Posted July 12 2009 at 11:03 AM.
if this story is true then it will be a great bit of business from SAF but i would strongly advise him to buy seb schweinsteiger. he is the attacking midfielder we need so much to replace ronny.
By dazzz.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:13 AM.
why do the english call non european players greedy? look at john terry he is using city interest to get more money out of chelsea. but if that was a foreigner he'd be called greedy. I find this to be racist in football. lets open our eyes people, football is more about money now. eto is nt greedy cos he has turned down city who offered him more wages than what man u are offering him now. how's that greedy?
By tordo.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:09 AM.
if this story is true then it will be a good bit of business from SAF. but i strongley advise him to buy seb schweinsteiger. he is the missing piece of the jigsaw. come on SAF make it happen.
By dazzz.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:19 AM.
Yeah right. If he wants to go to a club and win trophies why would he go to one that has lost their best two players and replaced them with an Ecudorian kid who has no end product and Michael "needs money" Owen! Whats next- they will buy back Van Nistleroy to complete the strikers retirement club lol! LFC and Arsenal will win the league this year and for a few to come. Now that English clubs are not the best payers with the new tax laws and strong Euro teams like United and Chelsea will no longer be able to buy proven players for big moey as they will not want to come! Roll on number 19!
By The Scouse Mouse.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:17 AM.
Not sure about Eto'o. Think he's past his best for that sort of money and was trouble at Barca last season. Sooner take a punt on Essien (yes WISE we need a rock in midfield more than anything else, got some great young forwards coming through and Berba and Rooney will shine next season) as looks like Chelsea do have a price to sell at. Citeh only wanted Eto'o to capture the African market as they know far east is sewn up by United and USA is still difficult.
Still need another forward but let's face it we've won the PL before with virtually every outfield player contributing to the goal tally. SAF knows what he's doing. Who knew much about Ronaldo before he joined us. The boss takes decent players and turns them into gems more often than not - obviously some notable failures!
By Joyce.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:24 AM.
The best legacy SAF can do for man u in this century is to sign Eto. As an african and man u fan that will be our pride here in africa. some of our friends say we are racist because we don,t have any africa in our team. l told them is because non of them is good enough to play 4 almight man u. l think now is the time to prove them wrong.
By imade iyobosa.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:19 AM.
Eto'o is type of the player we need like him, plus owen what more do you want? As we're waiting for the youngstars to keep up.
By Nchimunya.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:34 AM.
City gave the player the time they deemed necessary for him to know he wanted to be on the Blue Half of Manchester.. Eto'o delayed and City duly "Pulled the Plug" - So United can't be snatching him from us.. We no Longer want him.... Good Player - Yes.. Too Expensive - Yes.. Better Players for a fraction of the cost - Yes !!!!
City are building a future - all the stars now saying No, No, No... Will rue their mistakes ...
I want to see how he will Fair under United, when Ferguson hangs up his boots. maybe 1 or possibly 2 seasons left..

Reading many of the comments leave me with an interesting question: how come that Alex Ferguson is still the manager of Manchested United - "a club in decline" and a club "no top-footballer want to play in"? Being English champions and participating in CL-finals for the last 2 years (won one!) it is not quite clear to me, where the problems are. In 2 weeks time, you'll see who is playing first team football with United the coming season. I am very confident that Alex Ferguson will be managing a great team. As always!
By Per.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:30 AM.
Who the hell really wants to go to Man City? Do you think a player like ETO'O would want to be in a side as crap as City.
Join the Premier leagues and greatest football team in England ever!!Manchester United will crush the rest again, as usual..
By brian.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:30 AM.
I think Sir Alex knows what he is doing and let's just wait and see. Eto'o is not greedy , as barcelona want to sell him when city came with big money and as barcelona wanted him out under eto'o 's contract he have the right to get half of the 25m. Which is logical. If etoo was about the money he could run to city . I can't wait to see him in Ot.

By Colin Wood.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:24 AM.
What do you expect from a player who has given all to his club and country and is in his late 20s? He scored in two CL Finals against two English giants Arsenal and United. He has killed Chelsea's dreams many times. He has been to two World Cups! He has played in the finals of a Confederation cup, won 2 African Nations Cups with his Country, has an Olympic gold medal in Sidney (he scored in the dramatic finals against Spain), All time highest goal scorer in the African Nation Cup and the spanish league. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? ETO HAS NEVER FEATURED AMONG THE 6 TOP EARNERS IN ANY TEAM HE PLAYED FOR IN EUROPE! We in Cameroon know why! The colour of his skin that differentiates him from his team mates where ever he played, is a betrayal. To hell with the ultimatums about his coming to England. You English teams must go down on your knees to sign him at any pay for there is no player in the PL with this rich CV!

Well said Anti-Barca, why the anti-Eto feeling all round, the guy obviously did not want to join City hnece making it difficult for Barca to sell him, yet he's still being portrayed as greedy, baffling. Then again, the likes of Terry, Lampard Rooney and co that demand huge increases every year are untouchable, just ask Ashley Cole who has been victimised over the £5k fiasco.
By Red.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:06 AM.
Although he's undoubtedly one of the better strikers in the world, the ego of Eto'o matches his ability. He's a potential troublemaker and not someone I'd like to see playing for ManUtd. Stay away from Zlatan Ibrahimovic as well. They're no good for team spirit. Ferguson should rather be looking at bringing Giuseppe Rossi back to Old Trafford.
By Tommy.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:04 AM.

Thier young with great potential. having said that, i doubt mr Blatter is gonna push for that 5-6 rule in europe now that Real Madrid have signed so many forigners this summer, do you?
By pte wilson.. Posted July 12 2009 at 7:50 AM.
huge mistake signing him. i am afraid that the OT doesnt have enough room for his ego , he's injury prone as well way too often. Ferguson must clean out the midfield and splash some serious cash in that area , we are poor in midfield , even a blind could see that , it was obvious long before that final , i am still wondering how on earth none of the big four failed to take advantage of that fact , miserable loosers ......

I sincerely believe that we should not get eto, after loosing ronaldo and tevez,we need some better players, and we should go for ribery and aguero, and we will be better off,

Valdes got his salary doubled but no one is talking about greed because greediness is a word that is good only for non-europeans. It is one thing to hate someone but I think in this case objectivity should prevail. Eto is worth more than what he gets in Braca; including money and appreciation. All I know is that no one can cheat nature; respect or no respect, he will still hit the net.

Yes, a great finisher, in a team that creates chances. But a bit of a diva, to say the least. Let's hope he's as miserable at The Swamp as that great success Berbatov, and City can thank their luck for a narrow escape. Perhaps he can play when Owen's injured? Ah, that's a long season then...

I was reading a couple of weeks ago that United had a new transfer policy of not signing anyone over the age of 27. That seems to have been abandoned in favour of any old has been who'll have them. Who next? Henry?

This wont happen 28 is too old and no resale value. plus he has a bad temprement. why would he leave Barca? you have to question his motives

Brilliant news, he was deadly in the Final against us and with us losing Tevez to gain someone like him for the same price would be fantastic.
