STEVE HARMISON put the boot in the England selectors with a five-star performance to help ease his Ashes pain.

The Durham paceman was left out of England's 13-man squad for the First Test in Cardiff.

But while Monty Panesar and Co toiled against the tourists, he took 5-60 at Headingley for his county.

Harmison ripped through the Australian batting line-up last weekend for England Lions but was once again frozen out by captain Andrew Strauss.

And as Australia brought up their fourth largest Ashes total, Harmy, 30, was showing his new-found form.

He will now hope to win a recall for Thursday's second Test at Lord's after England's bowlers were battered.

The Aussies declared on 674-6 to record their biggest score against England for 79 years.

Donald Bradman (254) inspired them to their highest ever score of 729 at Lord's in 1930.
