Pepe Reina blasts Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez

CITY TYPE - Gareth Barry
CITY TYPE - Gareth Barry

PEPE REINA has hit out at Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez for snubbing Liverpool and opting for the riches on offer at Manchester City.

The Spanish keeper was a key part of the Reds side that finished just four points below Manchester United in the club's best Premier League season for years.

But instead of adding to the squad over the summer, Reina has so far seen two transfer targets turn down the chance of a move to Anfield and could also see team-mates like Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano leave Liverpool in search of moves abroad.

Opportunity

Barry looked a certainty to arrive on Merseyside in the close season after missing out on a move from Aston Villa 12 months ago.

But City seized the opportunity to snatch the player by offering him £120,000 a week before Liverpool had a chance to put in place the finance to sign him.

Tevez has been offered £140,000 a week to move to Eastlands after failing to agree a deal to extend his career at Old Trafford.

Pole

Liverpool also thought they were in pole position to land the Argentine by offering him Champions League football. Instead, the pair look to have chosen the money available at City. And Reina believes they should have prioritised their prospects of achievement above their wages.

He said: "Apparently, they moved for the money. That is their decision but I also think it is their problem if they cannot see that Liverpool is a bigger club.

"It's up to them what they do but let me tell them that I am very proud to play for Liverpool. We can offer European football and I think that should have been a consideration for them.

Honour

"Everybody knows what it is to play for Liverpool. It's a pleasure and a tremendous honour. I am surprised they didn't consider these things. Some things in a player's career should be more important than money."

Liverpool's latest balance sheet shows why they appear unable to offer anywhere near the kind of lucrative wages City are tempting players with at present.

Figures announced last month showed that joint owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks are struggling to service the £350million loan they took out to buy the club.

Kop Holdings, the parent company that owns Liverpool, lost nearly £43m last year and backers RBS have moved to assure fans that their club is safe.

As it stands, manager Rafa Benitez is having to sell players before he can strengthen his side.

Fighting

Even so, Reina, 26, insists Liverpool will be strong enough come the start of the season.

He said: "At Liverpool, you have to be fighting for the title and that's what we will be doing this year.

"We are involved in four competitions and just targeting one of them is not enough. The big one of the Premier League would definitely be best."

I am sickened by this constant reference by top 4 clubs to Man City being unworthy. What arrogance. Who do they think they are? The top4 isn't theirs by right and Man City are not some small town team appearing from nowhere. Whats wrong with them or Villa or Everton etc gatecrashing the party. In fact its because the top 4 have spent so much on players in the past that the likes of City have to use cheque books to attract the stars. Thats not wrong, its just life and the sooner the pathetic whingers stop moaning, the better.

reina is right, there all moving for the cash, buts whats cash when the depth of your squad is waffer thin and they'll all look like muppets when they win nothing in the next 3 seasons. Liverpool are a team with depth and quailty WORLD class players, city have robino who did nothing last season, and united have lost there spark. Liverpool for the title!

I earn 24k a yr, I've just been offered a job for 100k, 4 times my existing wage. Am I going to take it? COURSE I AM YOU **** Why the **** wouldn't I? The only people loyal to their club are the fans, to the players it's a job. Get over it...CTID

You lot either have no vision or are plain ol' jealous!

The reason players want to join City (apart from the money) is because they see the club rising up the league and soon to break the top 4. A prosperous club that has no financial concerns (unlike the majority of the current top 4) that is unaffected by the current financial climate.

Mark my words, whether you like it or not, City will break into that top 4 before long. It may just take another summer transfer window but no longer.

The more we sign quality players the more it will have a snow ball effect, attracting other quality players. Just look at Real Madrid, last season they looked like a club in decline, now every man and his dog wants to play for them because of the players they have signed.

Time to get worried!!!

By Chris. Posted July 7 2009 at 9:13 PM.

Pepe has a point to a certain degree... First and foremost - I believe players want to PLAY football.. Barry can see that he has a regular first team spot at City (whereas Liverpool rotation, rotation, rotation even Gerrard isn't guaranteed a game).

Tevez has also seen this as a problem at the Mighty Man U.. Choosing to leave albeit it took the board a while to discover how much they need him and I do think that not starting him cost them the European Cup.
Anyway, back to Pepe' point - Honour... as many people would agree that to play for a club with such histories as Man Utd, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona and the like... would be very pleasing and a great thing to put on your CV, at CITY however they are going to become the players that create the sort of football success that we have been missing for many years (Malcolm and Allison) with the backing and the sound business minds of the Arabs that will continue to put foundations in place that will enable the club to maintain the highest levels of football for many years to come.. Not like Utd who will collapse as soon as Ferguson hangs up his boots...
Hughes and his management team are only being requested to create a team at this stage to be able to obtain a top 6 finish.. We know that this is more than achievable with the players already in place at The CoMS.
Pepe if we didn't already have Shay Given and Joe Hart, you would be welcome.. but you'd probably not want to play for a small club like City anyway.

As a Liverpool fan I find it virtually impossible to conquer any bad feelings towards City.

Congratz City on your signings, all the best for the season ahead.

By LFC4life. Posted July 5 2009 at 11:22 PM.

I think it's a bit premature to write off City when it will take them a couple of years to become a team capable of challenging for top honors. I think the owners realize that and are not exhibiting signs of impatience. I do also believe that if City were to get a higher profile manager (and there are very few out there who could handle all the ego's in the dressing room) it would be easier to attract the Kaka's of this world.

Hughes is a decent manager but someone with experience on the continent would have been useful. For all of Mourinho's faults, he would be the ideal replacement.

I am a Liverpool fan but do not begrudge City their new found wealth, and it would be hypocritical to do that. I wish we had some of that money and could buy Villa and Silva.

By Samanyha. Posted July 5 2009 at 6:49 PM.

who ever city buy players dey 'll nvr ever get into big4 .... even no 5 or 6 dey still struggle

By leina. Posted July 5 2009 at 5:46 PM.

city have ambition and like it or not they will soon (2 or 3 years) become one of the top 4,im not a vity fan(bolton fan) so my argument isnt biased... it's true.
lets all stop being jealous of city

By aidan. Posted July 5 2009 at 5:05 PM.

i support liverpool but have to admit man city fans have a point... aside from arsenal, the big4 spend big bucks on players. unfortunately for city fans, we've been doing it forever so we have history on our side. city may be able to become the next chelsea, but exactly what is that? a team built on money hungry players with NO heart! have you watched a chelsea game? lampard is the only one out there that doesn't make me nauseous. the rest are just living on talent. liverpool have the least talent in the big 4 but we have players with more heart than the other 3 combined! i'm not trying to anger city fans... it really isn't fair in one sense, but in order to catch up with the teams that have been there forever you need to sell your souls like chelsea have and play with a team of heartless talent. enjoy your "success". it will pass...

By liverfan. Posted July 5 2009 at 4:21 PM.

Is it me or did we not add Glen Johnson? Also, as far as I can see we have not sold anyone of significance yet. And as far as I'm concerned City have not won anything yet, so to be mentioned in the same breath of Liverpool, Barca, Milan, Madrid or even the Scum is laughable.

By Torres9. Posted July 5 2009 at 2:51 PM.

Well done Pepe ....why cant the city fans just admit that he's right . Its obvious that theyve given up european football to play for Mercenareh Citeh ! However if thats their motivation then fine , of course they are going to be tempted by silly money , but spare us the " i'm impressed by the clubs ambition rubbish " . Maybe next year with the added quality of the squad they will be able to fill eastlands for a £5 (hamburg) . Oh yes i forgot , didnt qualify , did we ?

By BillyC. Posted July 5 2009 at 11:38 AM.

Jase if you're gonna blow your city horn make sure you blow the right tune,Citys' average attendance last season was 42,126,Liverpools was 43,532 the reason it's lower than the capacity is due to us playing in Europe....
I shouldn't be suprised that a few city bandwagon jumpers don't even know about there own team.

By Sal. Posted July 5 2009 at 12:02 PM.

Reina is spot on. As a footballer if you had the choice between Liverpool and Man City there is only one choice. The only reason you'd even consider City is the money. Liverpool are, (and always will be, no matter how many trophies City eventually buy) a bigger and better club. Liverpool will finish above them this season as well. Again.

These new City fans coming out of the woodwork make me laugh. Just like Chelsea 2003. Who have they actually signed to make them so confident that this season will be different from the shambles of the last campaign? A defensive midfielder who can only pass sideways, an injury-prone Paraguayan striker (for £17m!!! haha) and they'll sign someone else who couldn't get in the Man Utd team, a team that City now think they are better than just because they have more money. Grow up.

Oh, hang on, they also signed Stuart Taylor. SCARED!

By mark. Posted July 5 2009 at 12:30 PM.

haha... re: Jase,

Yes City have a bigger stadium than Liverpool but your average attendance was lower... real fans eh?? Not a Pool fan but at least they are a big club unlike citeh!!! You'll always be Manchester's second club as you'll never get the fan base of United... Around the world when you say Manchester they think of United not City!!
Same with Liverpool -- everyone knows of them all over the world... at the end of the day Kaka rejected 500k a week as he knew City were 2nd raters!!!!

By pierce. Posted July 5 2009 at 1:13 PM.

Who could say that Tevez wouldn't be a nice signing? But then again, what would we (Liverpool) do with him, if we don't go back to 4-4-2 that is, don't think he want's to be second choice behind Torres? But chosing City after have played for United is just, well, backstabbing? So go ahead, have your money-wanting "star"! Good luck with Hughes getting you into the top 4, City should have kept Svennis.

By Chris LFC. Posted July 5 2009 at 12:57 PM.

It all about one word that liverpool dont have AMBITION

By dan the fan. Posted July 5 2009 at 11:43 AM.

jake ....Err he did play for his boyhood team ..Barcelona . In fact he played against on LFC in Uefa semi 2001 . They sold him to Villarreal in 2003 . In youre going to come on here to bleat and make a point , as least get your facts right . Only one English team wins a final in Istanbul ....well in Martin Jol !!!

By Billy. Posted July 5 2009 at 11:48 AM.

Lmao @ all the bitters on here!

How much do you think Torres is getting? Ferdinand? Terry? Gerrard? Mascherano? Rooney? Adebayor? Fabregas? Etc etc etc. The ONLY thing these fans of the so called top 4 cant stand, is that theres another fish in the sea that can compete with them. No longer do the top 4 have a monopoly on transfers, and that is a fantastic thing for our league. With Manchester City have finances to rival anyone and the likes of Spurs improving every year these top 4 clubs dont like it.

How DARE a player choose to go to a club outside the top 4, and get the chance to, not only be another player in a top team (Barry to Liverpool) but be instrumental in turning a top 10 side into a top 4, and challenge for honours. Instead of going down as another player in that year that club won another league title, but they go down in history, in folk law, that they were part of the team that turned Manchester City, a laughing stock at times, into a really challenge. When they hang up their boots they wont just be another player, they'll be down in history.

As Reina says "everyone knows what it is to play for Liverpool" - but thats easy, Barry & Tevez xould go there and win things no problem, but everyone also knows what it could be to play for Manchester City.

By MR D. Posted July 5 2009 at 10:05 AM.

Hmmmm, I would play 4 city for nothing rather than play for man scum for £150,000 p/w, and thats honour, as a city fan. Reina talking bout honour? If he was honourable he'd play for the team he supported in his childhood.

Man City better be looking forward in playing Preston North End with Neil Mellor haha or even Newc. :O

By Barry Buchann. Posted July 5 2009 at 9:41 AM.

I agree with reina that it's about money with barry and tevez, even torres has stated he wouldn't go to a club just for the money.
I can't understand how a player say's he wants CL football, but goes to a team that aren't even in any european competitions.
it's good to see players say that they aren't interested in money, they signed for a team because of the prestige for playing at that club. Nice 1 pepe.

Proper city fans shuld stand up against this appauling approach to the greatst game in the world. They are a disgrace to football and shuld be ashamed. They are the next spurs fans - delusional. The BIG4 have fans all around the world - you have fans in manchester only. Top 8 2009/10 - 1. Arsenal 2. Chealsea 3. Everton 4. Liverpool 5. Man United 6. Aston Villa 7. Spurs 8. West Ham

By Oliehyper. Posted July 5 2009 at 8:57 AM.

Nice to hear a true footballer come out and say that money isn't everything. After a few weeks where the footballing world has gone money mad. If more footballers had these principles maybe football wouldn't be in the situation it is in - looks like Liverpool have a few of them (Gerrard and Torres also). How can Newcastle FC cost the same as one player! Liverpool will never go 'bankrupt' the fans wouldn't allow it - giro's included - how predictable!

And to all the city fans who keep saying 'we have the money...' - is it in your bank??? No didn't think so because it isn't YOURS and when your sugar daddy gets bored when you haven't won anything (not with the tactically inept Hughes in charge anyway) you will be in a worse position Liverpool are in as you won't be able to attract anybody.

Good luck to Barry and Tevez you have seen their character (Barry - I only want to join a CL club - oh dear oh dear) and I am glad they haven't joined Liverpool. As Rafa has repeatedly said - I need players with the character (Jonhson signed for an over inflated fee but he opted for less cash I believe) so he 'luckily' missed out on these two.

Lets see how the season finishes city - but I wouldn't hold you breath - the rumours of dicontent in the dressing room will grow and grow - especially when you are bringing in all these players and overlooking the players that have kept you ticking over recently

By Reina is a TRUE Red. Posted July 5 2009 at 8:56 AM.

By John Gill. Posted July 5 2009 at 8:43 AM.

all i seem to keep reading are comments by other fans about what city are going to do when our sugar daddy gets bored and takes his cash elsewhere. You should all do your homework if you think he earned his money on a whim. He has been talking about his long term ambitions for the club and why he chose us only this week, so read it and weep. suppose the rags can change their ever funny 'massive' to a very real 'stratospheric' now.

Liverpool will walk the league next season, We have the best team and squad. Very simple really.

By Tony. Posted July 5 2009 at 8:10 AM.

What a smack tarse!! Hughesy should offer Reina £150,000 a week and just before he signs, tell him to DO ONE!

By D. Doodohdoandedoh.. Posted July 5 2009 at 7:44 AM.

The Simple Fact Is And All City Fans Should Know This

Barry six months before he signed for city he said he would'nt leave villa unless it was for a team IN the champions leauge

Man City Are NOT in the champions leauge so what does that tell you ? Dont take a rocket sciencetist to work it out...MONEY MONEY MONEY

Fair enough city are going to be potential champions leauge but thats not what barry said he wanted

There will be a lot of players join city who are there for the money the shirt will never really mean anything to them like it should...Shirt first money 2nd

One thing il credit mark hughes for and im not a city fan is the fact he is trying to build a team and not buy success like chelsea did

By Dan0. Posted July 5 2009 at 7:25 AM.

you man city fans are all delusional your saying "lets buy torres lets get gerrard" what are you going to do when your little money man gets fed up with you and you have no income and a manager who is not world class?

By Billy Wallace. Posted July 5 2009 at 7:21 AM.

10-15 years ago football became all about money, the BIG 4 are that because of BIG MONEY,what do you feel we felt like when Chelsea took SWP,or we went down to the 2nd division,if results are not about money, why the BIG 4,why can't anybody break the cartel,as soon as class players come along the money takes them,ROONEY FERDINAND,SWP, the list go's on,in a few years it will be the big 1,and the next 4 until things change again,as they will,I can tell you this wherever we end up ie 2nd Div we will be there CTID

By CTID56. Posted July 5 2009 at 5:11 AM.

I'm a man city fan who believes that all this money that we are throwing around is absolutely scandalous; yet I am of the opinion that other clubs ie. the top 4 have been doing this for years via their ridiculous champion's league earnings and seedings. all 4 english clubs are virtually guarenteed to reach the knockout stages.

I feel that all the major clubs in europe are under imense pressure to sign the "Galacticos" players every transfer window. Every year or "window" there are the same 5 or 10 names being linked with the same 5 or 10 clubs

If you look at the best managers in this country ie. Ferguson, Wenger and Moyes you will find that they find younger, different talent at a lower cost; even showing faith in their youth players in big games

If all these big name players (Terry, Eto'o, Tevez and Lescott) came to City, where do I think we'd finish in the premier league?

5th!

By carl the blue. Posted July 5 2009 at 4:44 AM.

Rekka the blue i actually like Man City as a club too, and I welcome their challenge which will make the PL more interesting, but to say LFC won't win the PL or CL is a bold statement. LFC were runners-up last season and have been in the CL finals twice in the last 5 yrs. Anything can happen. All i'm saying is that some of the fans are deluding themselves if they think that all of a sudden they will be challenging for all honours just because they have a lot of money.

By Mark John. Posted July 5 2009 at 2:43 AM.

For a club with no cash and in debt we aint doing half bad...

Supporters of Teams not in the top 4, will always talk about things unrelated to whats happening on the pitch, because they cant talk about the CL, Fa cup, EPL as they are contesting none of the above.

This season if man city break into the top 4, which i hope they do, then maybe anything a man city fan has to say can taken seriously....

its like ian bill telling bill gates how to use a computer!

Reminds me of that advert, when that german guy says' shhtop you haavent evolved yet!!!

And you cant make any comparisons with chelsea as they were building a team since the mid nineties through to ranieri who got them into the top 4 before the real money came in.

By Lfc4life. Posted July 5 2009 at 2:24 AM.

I've always had a soft spot for Liverpool, any team that gets under the skin of Man U gets my vote.

But the top and bottom of it is, we all go to work for the money, if you love your job that's a bonus. Most people would change jobs for a big pay rise!

As for 'Reina believes they should have prioritised their prospects of achievement above their wages'. What prospects?

Liverpool won't win the CL, or EPL in the next few years because their not good enough! That just leaves the domestic cups, and anyone has a chance at them.

So after one-two years without CL football they could have it all. now thats a real prospect!

CTID.

By Rekka the Blue.. Posted July 5 2009 at 2:22 AM.

Yes, you keep on telling yourself that... Again lets look to Chelsea shall we? Have they been able to attract the top players despite offering recent success and CL footie? City are like the rich man who has nothing to offer a woman but his money. The mercenaries will take you for every penny for a couple of years, before engineering a move to a team they have a chance of winning something at.

By Mark John. Posted July 5 2009 at 2:03 AM.

Uh, MrBluesky you are clueless.
2 man team? Did Stevie or Torres play when we thrashed the scummers? Real Madrid? There are stacks of examples where we've come up trumps without our two main players.

Citeh are nowhere near Liverpool and I doubt they ever will be...

By MC LFC. Posted July 5 2009 at 1:57 AM.

City are on the up. Liverpool are on the down.

Which team is more likely to be able to attract top players over the next few years and which team is more likely to win a premier league trophy next? City out of the two of them, though it will be a few years yet

By bertie. Posted July 5 2009 at 1:48 AM.

Ha! we are deluded??? Of course City will improve, but to say they are going to compete with Man U,LFC and Chelsea is laughable! This takes time and are you sure Mark Hughes is the World class manager to manage all these 'Eastland Galaticos'??

By Mark John. Posted July 5 2009 at 1:34 AM.

Hmmm, yes I can see that Torres joining your other 12 strikers... Chelsea who can offer CL football, a Premiership challenge and actually have won something this decade, can't attract the big names let alone City. The players you will buy will be mercenaries who will take the mick. Your best player last season was Ireland despite spending a fortune on Robinho.

By Mr Bluesky. Posted July 5 2009 at 12:54 AM.

If city don't secure the services of barry and tevez, what else are they meant to do if they want to win anything or at the very least break into the top 4? If they don't get top players then they can't compete at the top. It's hardly citys fault for having ambition, do the owners want to fight relegation or fight for trophies? I think perhaps the time may be right to place a £50M offer for Torres. He's already come out in the press this week and said what a big threat City are. He looks an ambitious player so he's the type of player City are currently looking for. Got get him Bluesy because Liverpool couldn't afford to turn you down, get Gerrard aswell while you're at it !

All this talk of a new world order?? Chelsea were runners-up in the PL, and CL semi finalists when Roman came in and they haven't won the Prem in 2-3 years, and have not won the CL. Just because City can play real-life Championship Manager do you really think that they can overhaul the 'big four' and then compete against Barca,AC Milan, and Real in Europe. Surely that is years away??

By Mark John. Posted July 4 2009 at 11:58 PM.

The reason these lads have not gone to Liverpool is because they want to finish top 4 next season, look: 1. Chelsea 2. Man City 3. Man Utd 4. Everton 5. Spurs 6. Liverpool 7. Arsenal 8. Villa

So Carlos Tevez and Gareth Barry are the only players in the Premier League who get paid and all liverpool players play for nothing?

By JG. Posted July 4 2009 at 11:44 PM.

No, Reina is correct.

Put away your biased mindset and ask yourself this...

Two years ago, would Carlos Tevez and Barry pick Manchester City over Liverpool?
In short, the answer is no. Simply because City wouldn't have had the ability to offer much more wages. As they've been able to this time, the players have rejected Liverpool and in turn, accepted more cash to join City.

Reina isn't saying it isn't an honour or privelage to play for Manchester City. Of course it is, in the opinion of City fans. Just like it is for any team in the mind of their own fans. Reina is simply saying, at this very moment in time, Liverpool are by far a larger club and he's right. As I'm sure most would agree.

There is a way to go about achieving success. Your Manchester Uniteds, Liverpools, Arsenals, Barcelona's, Milans and Real Madrids of this world have worked their way to the top from scratch.

Chelsea, great team though they are, are more recent and had a huge cash injection to get where they are. In 20, 30 or 40 years, they'll be held in the same regard as said teams. Which is what will happen with Man City, and I wish them and Chelsea the best of luck next season. Just not when they're playing Liverpool!!!

hmmm, last year Barry says he wants CL football, this year he signs for a team that offers NO european football. Tevez turns down the English and world champions, who were in the CL finals to play for City. Why of course they are ambitious, and passionate about city, nowt to do with the sums offered...

By Mark John. Posted July 4 2009 at 11:42 PM.

Poor Pepi
Should I spell it out for you ?
No money to buy, no money to fund a new stadium, owners who want to sell the club at the first oppertunity but no takers.
Finish out of the top 4 and you guy's are in deep deep trouble.
So thats why Barry and Tevez ignored your trouble ridden outfit to join the club that represents the New World Order in the Premier and why you must sell before you can buy.

By Feed the Goat. Posted July 4 2009 at 10:47 PM.

So where was Tevez going to play at Liverpool. He wants regular football! Liverpool would be the same position for him as if he stayed at Man Utd because of Torres etc. Liverpool, Man Utd have spent and spent till they are neck deep in debt. Why is it all of a sudden a problem when its City doing the same as they did? The Top 4 teams are RUNNING SCARED now...which one will fall?

Wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah
Booho Reina, they didnt want to go to liverpool get over it tool.
Wah wah wah

By Wah wah. Posted July 4 2009 at 10:52 PM.

Who is this plonker to sit in judgement on all players decisions and why they made them. Desperate pathetic comments. And if he was offered 300k per week reina would gallop out of Liverpool. Prat

By Blue. Posted July 4 2009 at 10:52 PM.

Joker.

Bring on Liverpool.

By garryc. Posted July 4 2009 at 10:59 PM.

Hahaha, what a whinger. Offer him 200k a week see if he turns it down. He'd be good backup for Given.

By Freddy. Posted July 4 2009 at 11:27 PM.

Sour Grapes springs to mind. The reason Barry & Tevez have not signed for Liverpool is because they have ambition. Liverpool along with United are 'Has Beens' they are both financially in serious debt, neither will improve on this past season so the only way is down. There is a massive change in football hirachy happening and Man City are hitting the ground running... keep up if you can !

By Mr Bluesky. Posted July 4 2009 at 11:23 PM.

so Pepe Reina says Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez have chosen the money available at City instead of the honor of playing for liverpool.Right then Pepe why dont play for liverpool for nothing if its only for the honor or let say liverpool ask you to have a pay cut,how long would it be before your sneaking off back to spain..

By la la . Posted July 4 2009 at 11:00 PM.

Is it not an honour or a pleasure to play for Manchester City ? We may have won nothing over the last thirty years or so, but does that mean we are a small club who should not dare to get better.
Any player who comes to Eastlands and helps City to win a trophy will be held in the highest esteem, something which im sure many of the players past and present all know so well.

By john andrew. Posted July 4 2009 at 11:19 PM.

Reina is bleating like a girl at a party with a smaller piece of cake because he knows Liverpool blew their last chance to win the title and won't get another chance during his career. Liverpool will start the season weaker than last year and he knows it. If he had honour himself he'd be playing for his home town in Spain, wouldn't he? Or is he excused from his own judgements?
