The Aussie skipper was disappointed his side could only draw their four-day game against the English Lions at Worcester.
But he was thrilled to see key players like Brett Lee finding form ahead of the First Test in Cardiff.
Ponting, 34, said: "We're pretty happy with our preparations and we got a lot out of this game.
"The wicket will have been similar to one we face in Cardiff and we couldn't ask for much more.
"It would have been nice to force a win here, but we got four good days' cricket and travel to Cardiff happy with that we've done.
"We just want the Test match to start because it seems like an eternity coming, but everything has been spot-on."
Fast bowler Lee put in some powerhouse performances, taking seven wickets in the match.
He flattened Vikram Solanki's leg stump with a vicious inswinger yesterday and Ponting added: "He really started to swing it and when Brett does that, he is as good as anyone in the world."
Ponting also thinks England should recall Steve Harmison, who impressed for the Lions.
He said: "He is one of the best fast bowlers around. He has height, bounce and all the makings of becoming an all-time great."
Marcus North found his direction, smashing an unbeaten 191 before Australia declared on 438-4 at lunch on day four and then Mitchell Johnson grabbed two wickets.
Ponting set the Ian Bell-skippered side an impossible 445 runs in 60 overs to win and play was called off as they reached 162-4.
There was an injury scare for Australia when Michael Hussey was hit on the left ankle and retired hurt.
But 'Mr Cricket' was fit enough to field later.
