The Aussie continued his comeback after hip surgery by beating Germany's Philipp Petzschner 7-5, 7-5, 6-3.
Hewitt had the non-stop backing of a boisterous fan club. They ran through an endless repertoire of songs and at one point stewards had to tell them to tone down the noise.
But Hewitt insisted: "The support was fantastic. It was a great feeling out there. I thought they were fine. I felt the whole crowd were really into it. It was a good atmosphere. It doesn't get distracting. I'm used to it.
"For me it's a background noise. And I feed off 'em when I need to. It works perfectly for me. "
Hewitt was always confident he would overcome the op which saved his career.
The 2002 Wimbledon champion said: "I gave myself a very good chance of coming back to this level. And not to drop a set so far is nice. After the surgery my surgeon was very confident I would get back to full fitness."
