WEST BROM WANT ALAN IRVINE

Baggies will make approach for Preston boss this week

ALAN IRVINE - approach
ALAN IRVINE - approach

WEST BROM plan an official approach to Preston for boss Alan Irvine in the next 48 hours.

Baggies picked up £2million from Celtic for Tony Mowbray and it will take only £500,000 to prise Irvine away from their Championship rivals.

Former Everton No 2 Irvine, 50, is ready to move as he is understood to be unhappy at the lack of financial backing at Deepdale.

It's a tough one here I read all the people running Peace down but consider would we hae ever got tothe Prem once without him. I have stood in the Birmingham road End for years and the answer is "No". We are in no debt and have no fear like others of the bank coming knocking or thinking we have to sell everthing we have and go down a couple of divisions like Leeds to survive (and they still went in to admin). Hell we are little old Albion just accept it big name managers ar not going to come no matter how much we offer Peace has to pick from the likes of Irvine, Ferguson, Jones ect cheap or not, and personally I would not be too bothered if Ferguson or Irvine came but would like Ferguson for the type of football he plays. So lets wait and see.

But remember one and all run peace down at your own cost, our season tickets are £299 and have been for the last two years he sells and someone starts pumping money in your going to be paying a hell of a lot more.

Plus anyone who can get £500,000 (£300,000 more than we paid) for Sherjil McDonald must be a top businessman and deserves a medal. The guy never scored a goal for us and never looked like scoring one.

The Baggies are yet again searching for a manager. They will almost certainly go for a cheap option, irrespective of the guys credentials. WBA simply do not have anywhere near the money that is required to establish a PL position. They will always be the ultimate yo-yo club. As for Irvine, he's probably as good as its going to get, Mowbray was totally untried in English football and didn't do to bad.
Just get someone and soon.

Ferguson has no experience above league 1. He has no experience of dealing with a bad run of results. I'd rather he made his mistakes with PBoro than us. He's not worth the money PBoro want. Irvine is vastly more experienced and is a better bet to succeed.

If you think that Peace is considering Irvine ahead of Ferguson for reasons of financial cost you are deluded. Peace knows that the most important investment he ever makes is in a manager and he will go for the manager that he thinks will get him the best return ie. results. That man is Irvine - not the unproven Ferguson.

darren ferguson is the man for the job. if the current chairman had any true biz acumen he would not only understand that a double promo manager nwith no budget is better than any of his choosing has been able to achieve he would also recog that the man's dad is the greatest manager in football as peace knows it of all time think of the advice, the potential loans, peace is not liked by any real albion fans only the sicofants, he's a boy from shrewsbury school more interested in creation of personal wealth in my view, witness his attempts to control a major football name for a minor cost. great business to get 2m for mowbray now spend it (spec to accum and all that jazz) or forever carry the burden. i agree with comment 12 chris agnew dress for how you want to be if you play great football you'll get 40000 per home game. if you're gonna talk the talk (and we all know how you've been tryin to offload albion) then walk the walk or get out - we don't want commentators telling us how well run we are band how it suits to be a yo yo team we want consistent prem footie and you have failed to deliver and had much more time and loads more money than your predecessors - post your own comment peace or don't you admit to reading the fans prress.

only a hlfwit would not understand that the best man for the job by even a peace mile would be darren ferguson. the man is a winner but peace who wants to line his own pockets with the wealth that has been paid for for by the faithful albion support won't choose him and why not / because he stands up for himself like gary megson, john giles and the wonderful vic buckingham who left west brom to teach ajax total football. let's face it peace woyuld sell 2 morrow but he doesn't even have the foresight to extend the stadium. recently when i asked the commercial dept why they told me they could never get a bigger crowd than 30,000 what nonsense. i know mr peace and have met and had dinner with him in my view his main concern is himself - open up football like mp,s expenses i say!

most baggies fans don't Irvine as manager so why don't pearce listen to the supporters and get Darren Feguson in instead.

By carl dutson.. Posted June 28 2009 at 2:52 PM.

alan irvine is the best manager in the league
he came in half way through the season when we were bottom and kept us up
the season after he got us to the play offs with the smallest squad and least money and smallest fan base
fair enough we didnt go up but its just a bit of luck in the big games at the end of the day
i hope u dont get him but if u did he would take u back up and have more chance of keeping u there unlike mowbray

Same old Albion. Nothing against Irvine but why oh why do we always go for the cheapest option? My mom used to watch the Albion in the 50's and she said they've always been the same - money before success....Apart from a brief spell in the late 70's it appears that Albion are happy to be a nearly club. Is no one aware that Stoke and Hull are spending good money on quality players . If we get back up will these clubs already be two steps ahead. Another cheap solution to a problem that requires major thought and the money to back it.

By Albion68.. Posted June 28 2009 at 1:14 PM.

As per usual the Chairman is going for the cheap replacement. What has Irvine done up to now being a number 2 to David Moyes and doing ok for PNE.What have the supporters to do to get a decent manager in the form of Curbishley of Fergie jnr. Also the reason why we are known as a yoyo club is because of the lack of investment.£200-300 million coming in over the last 5-6 years and nothing to show from it

By Lewis Wilson .. Posted June 28 2009 at 12:18 PM.

I really don't understand why, when you compare the crazy money average players go for, clubs become so tight when comes to getting a manager. Managers have the power to buy the right players, choose the tactics and bring the best out of each player. I don't see why Darren Ferguson was considered too expensive because Barry Fry wants 2 million for him. It's peanuts when you you look at what we could lose and gain by choosing the right or wrong manager.

I think you'll find that managers negotiate the amount when they sign their contract.
i.e. Tony Mowbray had a clause which stated that Albion would have to allow him to talk to another club if the compensation figure of £2m was met.
Looks like Alan Irvine has the same sort of contract, so if Albion want to talk to him, they have to match the figure that is stipulated in his contract.
As for not being happy with the financial constraints, he probably accepted that to get the PNE job but having successfully managed to improve the on field performance from when he took over, probably feels that to gontinue the improvement, he'll need funds. Let's face it, if PNE start to slide, the fans will be calling for him to be sacked just as Albion fans would be if Mowbray had stayed and not started next season well.

By Andrew Saunders.. Posted June 28 2009 at 8:51 AM.

WBA won't get him for £500k, it'll have to be £1m according to his contract. Irvine is the best manager in the Championship, if he goes for £1m they'll be getting him cheap. Looking on the bright side for PNE fans, they seem to have a knack of choosing the right manager.

By George.. Posted June 28 2009 at 7:08 AM.

how can mowbray and irvine be valued the same? Does irvine have a play off place or a premier league promotion or even an F.A. Cup semi final on his c.v. ? ? ?

By mark mortimer.. Posted June 28 2009 at 6:59 AM.

Why? LOL because we have a chairman that is a businessman 1st, football chairman 2nd.

He will not pay over the odds, but he makes everyone else do exactly that! Fair play to him, best chairman we have ever had up here...

By John Mason.. Posted June 27 2009 at 11:49 PM.

Irvine can't be unhappy at the lack of financial backing at Deepdale because he was fully aware of the financial situation when he joined the club.

By Martin.. Posted June 27 2009 at 11:13 PM.

If mowbray is worth 2 million then Alan Irvine is worth the same or even more,
how they sort these amounts out is silly wba must have parachute payment why should they get pne manager on the cheap.
