MICK CHANNON LANDS BIG WIN

Trainer scoops biggest victory since autumn

NEW GOLD DREAM - Tony Culhane and Som Tala on the way to victory

MICK CHANNON got his biggest win since he was badly hurt in a car crash last autumn when Som Tala won the £180,000 John Smith's Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday.

The six-year-old, 16-1 shot held off a late surge from Wells Lyrical (15-2) to win by three quarters of a length.

Som Tala led at a dawdle under jockey Tony Culhane before striding away as the field turned for home.

Friston Forest (14-1) was third and Hendersyde (10-1) fourth.

Trainer Channon did not make the trip to Newcastle, but Culhane said: "It wasn't the plan to make the running, but I found myself at the front and I just thought I'd stay where I was.

"He's a good old horse. He kept finding more and when I let him out I thought it would take a good one to get him."

At the Curragh, John Gosden's 9-2 shot Dar Re Mi just held off Beach Bunny (25-1) in a thrilling finish to the Audi Pretty Polly Stakes.
