Carlo Ancelotti has already targeted Torres' Spain strike partner David Villa, offering Valencia £35m. Now the Blues boss is ready to make an audacious attempt to unite Villa and Torres at club level.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez will do all he can to block the move. But he is worried the huge sum offered by Chelsea could tempt American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
Liverpool's true financial state will be revealed over the coming weeks and Benitez is beginning to fear the worst.
At the end of the season Benitez was hopeful of landing 27-year-old Villa. Now he not only has to face up to Chelsea signing Villa but also targeting Torres.
Villa's proposed move to Real Madrid has not gone through because Chelsea's bid is £4m higher and is preferred by debt- ridden Valencia.
Now Blues owner Roman Abramovich is prepared to take advantage of Liverpool's own money worries by making the sort of offer he hopes Gillett and Hicks will not be able to refuse.
It is understood a tentative inquiry was made by a third party in April about how much it would cost to prise Torres away from Anfield.
The message from Liverpool at the time was that there was no chance of Torres being sold. Then in May the 25-year-old striker signed an improved deal to 2013.
If necessary, Ancelotti and Abramovich will settle for just landing Villa. But if there is even an outside chance of snatching Torres away from Anfield, they will take it.

Oh & I just read that Karim Benzema has just signed for/or about to sign for Real Madrid so I can see Villa going to Barcelona.
By Matt. Posted July 1 2009 at 12:43 PM.
I cant see Torres leaving Liverpool. I would love if they signed Villa; Liverpool would be unstoppable!! Those guys would never go to Chelsea.
If Chelsea sign CSKA Moscow left-back Yuri Zhirkov, Manchester City striker Daniel Sturridge and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Ross Turnbull; I would be laughing my ass off considerin who Ancelloti wanted to sign b4.

I am a LFC fan...Liverpool may not have many money but they are not stupid to sell the best player in the world and he is going to be an even greater player in a few years...CR is 80 mil...Pfff...Torres is 800 mil he is NEWER NEWER going to leave! YNWA

Mr Torres has already said he is not interested in money and stays at the club he's at because HE wants to. He has a good partnership with Gerrard and it works. Why try and reinvent the wheel if they can build on what they have?
By Reality Check. Posted June 28 2009 at 11:33 AM.
Dan Law!! HaHa, classic. Drogba being knighted!! But seriously, Torres has already said that the only english club he will play for is Liverpool. So why are Chelski bothering? It's insulting that they think money can change all that...you're wrong!! Money is not everything. What about heritage, pride, a good sense of history and a well behaved honest club. Not like that scummy southern blue mob, who have decided to try and buy their way into being a great club. They are a good club now, but suddenly becoming good doesn't grant you passage onto the same breath as united or liverpool. It will be many, many years before they are even close.
As for Ancelotti, he will be sacked this year and Hiddink will return after the World Cup. Chelsea clearly need an injection of youth and a solid Academy and transfer policy. They need to deal with the fact that a premiership might take more than one year. So what is Ancelotti's answer to that...Andrea Pirlo. HAHA!! Bring in the Milan pension brigade. So his answer for success is to buy old players, from a lower quality league, from a team that didn't even play champs league football last season, and were not really in with a shot at the Serie A Title. Pathetic...he will be gone within a year from today.

Okay!!!, anyone, any club, any manager, any coach any billionaire up for FABREGAS (ARSENAL) GERALD (LIVERPOOL) RAUL (REAL MADRID) FRANK LAMPARD (CHELSEA) TOTTI (ROMA) BUFFON (JUVE) FEDINAND( MANU) OR SAF (MANU) What the heck? It's all about " benjamin ". But sure, this 'll be a hell of transfer. More than FIGO ever kicked up in spain. You can bet on it.

Chelsea will just keep dreaming and drooling by the thought of Torres playing in their blue jersey. No way!
Torres is the kind of player who don't play for money. He said Liverpool is the club he supported when he was a boy - because of the great history and the greatness of The Reds. No supporter of The Reds would ever want to play for another rival club. :-P

OMG joe - how on earth will villa go to liverpool - your toooooooooooo poor!!!!! and chelsea are a much better team than liverpool! sure - you beat us twice in th premiership, but you havnt beaten us once since hiddink came in, hav u, so who is laughin now,eh? THE ALMIGHTY CHElSEA!!!!!

Jonathan Smart - wondered who would be the dope to bring that up. Read my post again - "...nothing existed before the premiership....we hadnt wont the league 18 times and the European Cup 4 times...". 18 leagues and 4 European Cups BEFORE THE PREMIERSHIP. That was my whole point to "True Red" the Manc who was making a point regarding we hadnt won the Prem. They think footy never existed before Sky came in and I reminded them what we had won prior to that (and the European Cup they had won). Only being going the game for 30 years lad and know more about LFC than you've forgotten. Your the idiot soft lad.

Torres to Chelski that WILL NEVER HAPPEN.Spanish player don't play for Italian managers..secondly Torres is worth more than 50 million..one of the owners sold there franchises for 332 million pounds..problem solved.Chelsea has Drogba,Terry and others that can NAG them to victory..Carlos A will be there for a year then he will forced into resigning..I don't think that there is a coach alive that can handle John Terry's whining..Liverpool with be victorious come what may..I don't care what Chelsea supporters say..they can buy the best but will never beat the THE REST.TORRES committed his future to the REDS.

Think we might even poach villa and he'll come to liverpool ...if masch goes....
Enjoyed reading all the hype we have plenty of youngsters of quality waiting in the wings to grab the premiership
Torres quality and i am so sure that Masch and Alonso will stay to win :) another 4:1 v mancs please and beat this also ran chelsea thats somehow crawled out of the woodwork in recent years they seem to think they are someone its only us and the mancs and the mancs are done with ....

The fact that the chavski supporters are out cheering their soviet money says all that needs to be said about their club. It is built on the money of innocent Russians, siphoned off to a pal of the elite. Don't they care that as well as shop lifters, their club is supported by the money of innocent Russians

I'm from Austria (Tyrol) and a big supporter of LFC...
The one thing I don't understand, everybody's talking about Liverpool's financial problems...but how can Benitez offer 18m for johnson with all these big problems!! I think he wouldn't do this if had to lose some of his key players like Torres or Xabi!!
Torres to Chelsea-> never gonna happen!!
Fuck off Chelsea FC, you ain't got no history...
By zelli79. Posted June 21 2009 at 5:32 PM.
to any liverpool fans that think there is no amount of money that cud get torres away from the kop, think again!!!!
50 mil might not be the magic number but as we saw with ronaldo there is a magic sum for every player at every club, because when the prices being offered get 2 the ridiculous amounts real offered for ronaldo, ANY club in the world will say yes because to turn down such amounts of money would just be stupid, especially when the club are haveing some financial troubles, like liverpool are!!!
By mic84. Posted June 21 2009 at 5:10 PM.
listen , torres and liverpool are obviously gonna refuse u hear me they can beg for him to come to chelsea even for 500 milloin buh it aint gonna happen how many times does he have to say he is happy at liverpool and has signed a new contract
By nicole. Posted June 21 2009 at 4:27 PM.
This could only happen if VILLA come to CHELSEA. And i think if CHELSEA offer £60m then LIVERPOOL will sell him. And i also think if the owner of LIVERPOOL does not manage the money then many to sell in the future.
By ShotGun. Posted June 21 2009 at 4:39 PM.

2 Points
Liverpool's Finances- Yes the owners owe money, there selling various assests to re-right this wrong Fact George Gillett just sound his nhl team today. Man U Owners owe much more why is this not in the news !!!!
World's best- Real ,Barca, Liverpool, Man U and AC Milan, Bayern Munch last 2 struggling in many ways.
If a player wants to play for Real instead of Man U why not they have a greater history in Europe, paying more money, better weather etc etc only biased English or Man U fans cant accept players leaving Man U or England
By paul. Posted June 21 2009 at 3:07 PM.
Im from England but why does everyone think that all top players want to play for top 4 Prem Teams.
Man U & Liverpool are equal in terms of success and drawing power the only thing they have is more money.
But in the world Man U are not the so called biggest, there the richest not even that with the debt they have which is higher than Liverpool but god forbid a paper ever say Man u are in crisis and the whole squad be linked with everyone.

Lets be honest if Torres did leave Liverpool, why would he join Chelsea his more likely to Join Real or Barcelona. Of all the so called world class chelsea players the only player they beat a top world class team to was Essien and that was man u Fact !!
As for £50m, 1. His the equal of Ronaldo 2. His on a longer contract to buy him out 3. Real, Barca, Chel, Man U and Man city want him we could easily sell for 100m to man city if we wanted too.
Reality 0% chance of this ever happening

Can't see Chelsea wanting to bring a reluctant Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea for any money. Money may talk in the boardroom, but it's all about performance after that. I think Chelsea could remain without additions to their squad until January to be honest, that said, Ancelloti doesn't offically start work until the 1 of July, so I guess written in some contract somewhere we won't be able to do any business until then. If you take your fantasy 11 and look at the possibilities for transfer there isn't too much that isn't already done or without any chance of happening. I've been watching the U21 European Champs, nothing really inspiring there that we didn't already know about, i'm puzzled to see where the kind of calibre of player Chelsea would take are going to come from at the moment. Let's hope their scouting in India/Asia can come up with something to get us all excited.

"I'm very happy with my new contract and wouldn't leave just to earn a little more somewhere else where I wouldn't be that happy. To want any more would be greedy and that is not me. As long as Liverpool want me, I will stay."
A few words from Liverpool's best ever signing. Benitez won't sell him and Hicks and Gillett haven't got the bottle to sell him - so its eat your heart out Chelsea and other club living in fantasyland

Torres has already said he's not interested in money. When he joined Liverpool he took a wage cut, that say's everything about the man, a wage CUT so that he would be able to play for Liverpool.
He's not a greedy player like all the manure and chelski players.

By Lfc. Posted June 21 2009 at 12:59 PM.
Believe me Torres would not go to any other Prem club including Chelsea.
He has a very close bond with the Liverpool fans and is idolised.
Gillett has agreed to sell his Montreal Canadian hockey team for £ 330 mil. That's most of the debt cleared Hicks is also trying to sell some of his assets.
Things are looking up at LFC. Instead of this talk of Torres going to Chelsea. Believe me he is going nowhere and don't be surprised if Liverpool find the money for David Villa.
He is very close friends with Torres who will be trying to persuade him to join us.

I can't see the 'Pool getting anywhere like the challenge together that they did this last year. It would seem they are about to loose some of their key players that possess key positions, the center of midfield being the big problem. If Johnson comes in that will be great for them but it will take a couple of seasons of regular play to get the heart beat back if they loose Mascha and Alonso, Lucas just ain't gona cut it, sorry. All said and done, without the Torres - Gerrard partnership, Liverpool would be a mid table side. I can't see Torres ever coming to Chelsea, sad to say, cos he is without doubt the best CF in the world with Drogba a distant second. the world is lacking this kind of player, I can't think of 5 in the International game. If he comes to Chelsea, I will be over the moon, if he doesn't, Liverpool can just hope they can pull another great season out of the bag and try and get near the 'Big 3'.
By SMALLZOOKEEPER. Posted June 21 2009 at 12:08 PM.
To be honest the 'Big Three'; ManU, Chelsea and Arsenal all had below par seasons performance-wise this last season whilst Liverpool played as well as they ever could. If things click for Arsenal with a couple of 'Usual' low key signings, they will do better than the 'pool. ManU is a tough one to call with what appear to be so many changes facing them, but we'll just have to trust the wisdom of Fergie to knit his best 11 together and see how it works, I think that will still make them a force as only Fergie seems to know how. I think Chelsea have has so much disruption of recent years that the team will remain much as it did at the back end of last season, with possibly a few induvidual players coming in that shouldn't disrupt the dynamic of the squad too much, we will just have to wait and see how Ancelloti bonds with the mainstay of Terry, Lamps, Drogba and the like.
By SMALLZOOKEEPER. Posted June 21 2009 at 12:08 PM.
In response to marks comments about my husband barry. Sorry mark my husband was so excited when he left his comments initially he did of course spell Stamford bridge as stafford bridge. (well spotted your mother would be proud of you). Incidentally nowt is not a word either but now I am just being silly. Barry is in the pool at the moment (last seen telling some Chelsea fans about the good news about Torres) but I am sure you will see from his initial post he was not being derogatory about Liverpool in fact far from it. I can understand you being upset mark Liverpool are not in the greatest positions at the moment and by the sounds of it you are a very loyal fan its just upsetting when you have to fall back on a spelling mistake to make a point. Perhaps you need to get out a bit more young man, as barry said gerrard will never leave Liverpool and you equally have some good players who are tied into long contracts so its not all bad. I find your quotes about man utd equally offensive but I guess this down to your upbringing and schooling. If you ever go on to meet someone and have kids mark please dont teach them this type of behaviour. Yours is the attitude that is dragging Britain down.
By sue ribbons. Posted June 21 2009 at 12:03 PM.
Not only that smallzookeeper, but 19yrs or so ago the pass back rule was outlawed, now when was the last time Liverpool won the league? told you about their game then doesn't it?

By Hedloo. Posted June 21 2009 at 11:35 AM.
I love the 'Pool fans all banging on about the Money that has bought success to Chelsea and nothing else. What short memories they have. I seem to remember Liverpool buying in all the talent they could in the 70/80's, maybe the key to their success then and the key to success in the Modern game. Honestly, they sound like some ugly old bloke with a fat bald head and no teeth, down the pub banging on about how good looking his girlfriends were 20 years ago compared to your good looking girlfriend now.

Sorry Mark, you can build your castle in the sky if you wish. The fact is "YOU BOTTLED IT" Last season, and these things have a knock on effect when the mind games start. You talk about it coming home, it is home, and has been for the last three years. Oh yes, it goes down south now and again, but when it does come back up north, it comes to Gods' country. Out of all the years the premier league has been going we have 11 of them, and you know something else, your name is nowhere on it FACT!!!!!
By salfordred2. Posted June 21 2009 at 11:27 AM.
If Hicks and Gillet are gullible enough to even make a squeak, there will be a public lynching waiting to happen.
If they haven't realised already, it is the people of Liverpool who own LFC and their presence in the city is merely tolerated by fans of the club.
One more false move by the pair and they will soon be chased out of town to assume the roles of absentee owners, that I am almost certain.
Cheers all.

and if you ever met Fernando as i have, you would know how much he loves Liverpool the team and the city, he has been a reds fan for many years before he joined, his closest friends in Madid are all Liverpool fans and have been for years. He wanted to come to liverpool not just for the football He wanted to be in the City that Spurned The Beatles.

Yes True Red football started with the Premiership. Nothing existed before then. We hadnt won the title 18 times or the European Cup four times (and you hadnt won it in 1968). Answer this for me - who are still the countrys most successful club? Come back to me when you either win your 19th title or when you win 5 European Cups (although I suppose you havent done bad for the self proclaimed biggest and richest club in the world only winning it 3 times). yes salford 2, we all remember ronaldo saying "i want to stay", but the difference between him and torres is that we all new he was lying. it was clear all along for all 2 see that the only reason he stayed on for another year was because of fergies remarkable persuasive skills and certainly not any loyalty to the badge or fans. and yes, by the way, fergie,, i do think u'd deal with "that mob",, and it'd be more than a virus u'd sell em. unlucky mancs, ur best player gone u'll win f'all this season. liverpool may not win it this season, but with some of the young players coming thru and squad players such as lucas finally starting to show their mettle + a more confident showing from babbel (please stop playing him on the left rafa, hes no more left footed than me!) i think will be coming home within 2 years.
don't crow about our financial situation mancs,, urs is far far worse

Anyone remember Torres' armband at Athletico...? "You'll never walk alone" He's going nowhere. Salfordred2, If hicks and gillett decided to sell, rafa would walk, so would the rest of the spaniards, and they would become the new Mike ashley trying to flog a dead horse! They have to keep winning to make the club financially viable so £50m for Nando is wasted if they dont qualify for champs league.

Meanwhile Liverpool is definitely goin to win premier laegue this season. Real Madrid is a clud that dosent have focus. They want to buy all the big names in the market and that wil be the begining of thier downfall. As for chelsea trying to attempt toress, does it mean that ancolloti did not hear the early worning from Toress to Ferguson? or did he just want to hear Toress insult him? wel i dont blame them cos they think that Liverpool is s retched club that any body wil come and point out any player he wants and go away wit it,liverpool players wil dissapoint all of them, lets see!!!!
By Stella. Posted June 21 2009 at 10:18 AM.
If liverpool dont spend money soon then this kind of story will keep coming up and some will become true.
If only Torres leaves then there is no way liverpool can find a replacement. Because they dont have the money to spend big anymore and we all know without 30-40 mil you cant get a star player in this world anymore.

Torres is moving in to a new house in Liverpool next week which he spent a year having done. Do you really think he has gone to all that trouble to move cities... idiots!
By Paul Howard. Posted June 21 2009 at 10:03 AM.
torres, would not go to chelsea,he said he loves the atmosphere and tradition of liverpool, chelsea even have to give out little plastic flags to wave to try and create some atmosphere, plastic team, plastic ground, plastic fans and deffo a plastic owner. roy

Snatch, Liverpool will do next season exactly what they did last season; Nothing!!!!!!
By salfordred2. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:58 AM.
you chelski fans are dreaming!!! You can't buy EVERYONE!!..And you can sit in your plush hotels on holiday reading the papers all you want.Torres is at Liverpool and that is where he will stay. Before Abramovich..Chelsea were just a 6/7th place team at best.Football is going jacks up with all the money hiking and Chelsea,Real Madrid,Man Utd,Barcelona are crippling football as we know it!.The game will soon implode financially.Look at what may happen to formula one!.Have some grace and win things by hard work and not how much can be wired from a swiss "Tax Free" bank account!!.
By Gibby. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:58 AM.
What a joke! Why on earth would he leave Liverpool to go downwards to Chelsea? And I agree , that he's worth more. Unlike CR he appears to be a pretty balanced young man, on and off the field.
By Jan. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:53 AM.
With the special grace of God. Benitez wil not loose any of his key players, and he wil come up wit money to do his major signings this season to contend wit other riverls. Meanwhile i apeciate Torees for his loyalty to the club and also let other greedy players to know that money is not everytin in life. May God bless him more.
By Stella. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:52 AM.
Sorry LukieG but if it is deemed necessary to sell, Rafa won't have a say in it FACT!!!!
By salfordred2. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:52 AM.
Torres, should move to chelsea becouse the money is good.
By bagwams. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:51 AM.
Torres leave Anfield for the bridge or rons world what nutjob thought that one up, they've got more chance of signing George Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By paul liverpool fan. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:43 AM.
Well Dave really shows his Northern ignorance! Chelsea are owned by a Russian and not a Polish person. Dave must be really thick if he does not know Romans nationality!

Er... Tony... it would be useful if you replied to the right authors when responding to posts. You are obviously better at dishing out insults than you are at hurling them in the right direction.
By Sir Cecil. Posted June 21 2009 at 8:23 AM.
I don't believe that Torres will leave Liverpool ,in his last interview he said : listen,my team is Liverpool and thiis is very clear to me ...."
And American Bosses of LFC won't leave him for any money because they want to win Premiership this season and this is the most important for all in UK esspecially for Liverpool Fans and Gillet and Hicks wouldn't like to despair them .

My holiday just gets better. Sitting in a hotel in malta just reading this. I always knew torres would end up at man utd or chelsea ( i am a chelsea fan). With the liverpool team being chopped apart due to money its a shame for football seeing a team going down like this but i guess thats the nature of the business we are in. I work at stafford bridge i have done for over 14 years and i know what working at a big football club is like. I have like other staff have become quite close to players and i cant imagine being in liverpools postion now. What ever happens though i think Gerrard will never leave Liverpool and he will always be a credit to them even in these dark times they are going through. My wife has just walked in and heard the news about Torres and is punching the air back to the celebrations.
By barry ribbons. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:06 AM.
torres = liverpool and their he wil stay
By mark. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:09 AM.
LFC fan... Lets put this to bed now. Liverpool are not in trouble. As it stands, no-one has gone anywhere. Rafa has a transfer budget and will spend it more cautiously than previous years coz there are no room for errors. He'll be gutted he can't compete for Villa as he'd only come to us if he left spain but that's not going to happen on either count. Lets not forget the results against the big four last year, so dont bleat on about injuries etc to others. Every team has problems every year and we should have capatilised on it but too many draws against the mid table, 11 behind the ball cost us dear. Torres is a reds fan so going nowhere, Hicks and Gillett lives wouldn't be worth living. Why not bid for Gerrard as well?!! Ancelotti has got to be seen as trying to construct the team he wants, but this is just more dross from the tabloids to get the manc cretins jumping up and down so they can bleat on about liverpools recent failure to win the prem. Lets also not forget that thats the only one they haven't won in recent years. Get a life and worry about improving your own squads, we'll be just fine and even though we probably wont win the prem next season, we'll have a good crack at it with a largely young improving squad... If any of the big names go, it will be only one of them for some cash to buy someone else, not to repay debt. If Rafa cant get in a suitable replacement, he wont sell. End of... here endeth the lecture.
By Lukie G. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:25 AM.
Torres would be good to keep the bench warm at Chelsea.
By Marc. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:16 AM.
Tony, clearly you're not reading the article properly; Sircecil didn't say anything of the sort, James0384 said it at 03.29am. You total numptie!!!
By salfordred2. Posted June 21 2009 at 9:01 AM.
Dear SIR CECIL with a name like that its quite clear your sport is fox hunting and not football please post sensible posts and its obvious your running scared of what the pool could do next season
By Satch. Posted June 21 2009 at 8:27 AM.
If Ronaldo is worth £80, Torres is worth £100 million which is out of Chelsea's league.
By steve tea. Posted June 21 2009 at 8:47 AM.
there is no point in trying to get torres you will just fail like man u
By gavin. Posted June 21 2009 at 8:46 AM.
I can feel the rumblings of panic coming from Anfield. There are no definates in the world of football, as you all should know money talks very loud, and if £50m has is on the table, it will matter not 1 iota, Torres will go! Words mean nothing, remember Ronaldo; "I want to stay at Manchester United". Watch this space Liverpool!!!!
By salfordred2. Posted June 21 2009 at 8:11 AM.
Torres laughed the other day when the mancs were linked with him. If he isn't interested in the mancs then why would Torres want to move to the chavski rentboys. Funny story though. ha ha ha

TORRES=LIVERPOOL FC ...End of story !
By elnino. Posted June 21 2009 at 8:06 AM.
wot is it with the manc loving papers trying to unsettle the reds pre season again, they have all gone off the gerrard leaving stories of every other pre season and moved on to torres, alsono etc just let rafa get on with is job and bring the title back to were it belongs ANFIELD.
