JOE HART has a agreed a year-long loan deal with Birmingham to boost his dream of squeezing into Fabio Capello's World Cup squad for South Africa.

The Manchester City keeper is already a key part of the Under-21 side who believe they can win the European Championship in Sweden.

Shay Given's arrival at Eastlands means Hart would have faced a tortuous season on the sidelines. So he is off to St Andrew's to challenge Maik Taylor for the No 1 spot.

Hart said: "The coach has said you need to be playing. That is what you want to be doing anyway, regardless of whether it gets you in the England side."

City manager Mark Hughes is planning to raid Sheffield United for Paddy Kenny, 31, as back-up to Given. He wanted to sign Kenny on a year-long loan deal but Blades are interested in a permanent deal.

It would cost City around £4million to land Kenny.
