ALAN CURBISHLEY is being lined up to become Newcastle boss.

Toon owner Mike Ashley is trying to sell the club but he is making contingency plans should a quick sale not materialise.

Curbishley has been sounded out and, despite the chaos that surrounds the club, he would be willing to move up to the North East.

Alan Shearer remains in charge of team matters but the situation is becoming increasingly complicated as his relationship with Ashley has become so strained.

Seymour Pierce, the brokers handling the sale, have received a formal bid from an international consortium with no links to the North East. The American group tabled a bid of around £100million on Friday after Barclays did the paperwork on a working overdraft of £25m to ensure the club can keep going in the short-term.

"A deal is nearly done, it's very close," said a source. "It could be announced as early as Tuesday or Wednesday next week."

Ashley believes he can get a better deal if Newcastle have a manager in place for the massive rebuilding job needed to help the club secure immediate promotion.

And Curbishley, 51, was the master of that type of management in 16 years at Charlton. He turned them from a club who did not even have a ground into a consistent Premier League force. And since he left they have slid down into League Two.

Curbs also steered West Ham away from relegation but, after a mid-table finish, he fell out with the fans and the board and left Upton Park last September, claiming constructive dismissal.

so many comments for a small club....

so many HAHA's its taking me back to the stadium of plight in 2003 and the HAHA cards at the derby win....

Now its the cheer up Alan Shearer, now I am sure I heard that in 96 about a certain P Reid well before anyone else had the genius idea of changing the words...

Talk about obsessed...Whats next? Using the Tyne Bridge on a S'land 2018 World Cup host campaign ;0)...

Enjoy while it lasts....xx

I think the problem with Mr Ashley is the fact it looks like he doesnt seem to like geordies or any kind of northeners. Unless there southern he doesnt appear to have any time for people this will probably be his downfall.Never mind come easy go easy I dont think Mr Ashley will ever be penniless but I think he is going to lose a substantial amount of money before his time at Newcastle is up shame.

By roger . Posted June 18 2009 at 12:25 PM.

There you go once again "Ashley strikes 'em again" ...does this fat millionier lack proper sense...seems so...first king Kev departed due to transfer policy and control...followed by Curbs from West Ham for similar reasone......how on the world has Ash found Curbs to be the suitable candidate when he will be in a direct conflict with a club which has transfer policy that were similar to the Hammers...current squad and the toon fans have faith in Shearer...so let the mesiah rule...only time will tell the success or the doom story....

and how many of you jeordies think that NewCastle will ever be able to win a single match in the Championship....current group of player set for exit..or even if they do stay, or even without them and with the remaining current squad, what will New Castle do?

Where will they get suitable new players from? Tell you what....goodbye championship...welcome League 1 with a garland...

I am a supporter - & I hate to say this - but I agree with the guy that aid Ashley could do a Ken Bates, and drag the club into bankruptcy. its really sad to watch, as well as my hometown club Swansea not getting promotion - ah well, I'll be able to watch both clubs in one day. I really wonder how Ashley became rich - he has no people skills, an knows how to only rip people off - the toon wont stand for it - watch many many more protesting this year. I hope the fatman is out by the end of this week - I somehow doubt it though.

I have tremendous respect for alan curbishley he is good manager but the only man for the toon is SHEARER.

By CRAIG DOBSON. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:41 PM.

Well after all those brags about Newcastle being a bigger club than Tottenham, Mike Ashley, a Spurs fan, got fed up and decided to buy the club and destroy it! HAHAHAHAHAH!

By U-Spurs. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:29 PM.

it kills me to hear once again what is going on with my beloved club ,it just gets worse every week . as for all those football fans jumping on the band waggon slating us as fans of the toon and the club it wasnt long ago that we were everyones second best team in the league as we entertained you s all . if it wasnt for fat ash and dennis the dwarf we would nt be in this mess . i just hope we get an investor in asap and appoint sir alan shearer who will put some pride back into our club and get a squad of staff and players together who will give there all for NUFC .
to readthe other day that chris hughton is ready to step in again and take the reigns is ludacris !

By karlos moorhead. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:59 PM.

I THINK NEWCASTLE WILL BE ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A CLASSIC PREMIER LEAGUE TURNED LEAGUE 1 CLUB JUST LIKE LEEDS. AND THE QUALITY OF FOOTBALLERS THIS DAY IN AGE AND THE MONEY THEY ARE DEMANDING IT WILL BE REALLY HARD TO REGAIN PREMIER LEAGUE STATUS. OUR ONLY HOPE BARR A TOP PASSIONATE MANAGER COMING IN IS THE GUY WHO OWNS OIL TO BUY THE CLUB. FREDDY/MIKE ASH AND JOHN HALL ARE MONEY MEN WHO NEVER CARED ABOUT THE CLUB. BASICALLY WE NEED A MIRACLE!!!!!

By chrissy j r . Posted June 14 2009 at 5:43 PM.

Oh isn't that nice other supporters banding together and having a dig!! listen up children we don't and never have been bothered by your pathetic utterings, you know no nothing of our club or city only what you take in by the media. And as for the Blackburn fan singing for fat Sam come back this time next year, i no what you'll be singing then.

By tony. Posted June 14 2009 at 5:17 PM.

Newcastle. Complete joke. Not a big club - just have a lot of fans. Cannot defend, can hardly attack - the only consistency they have ever had is to make useless signings. And now they are in their correct division. Probably should give the job to Shearer, he has no experience, has shown he cannot motivate players and will get paid stacks for it. Would be consistent. Take your blinkers off Toon, your glory days aren't over because you never had any.

By Dog. Posted June 14 2009 at 2:09 PM.

Curbs is a safe pair of hands - but he would have to work with the kind of players he knows little about - bone idle egotistical layabouts.

By Billy E. Posted June 14 2009 at 2:04 PM.

Hello canny Geordies. It's been a while since you took some of our old castoffs, do you want to do a swap for any of our detritus? Second thoughts, no thanks.Even your best player is past it for the Premier League. Pity you missed out on Mokoena though, probably too good for you boys.

Altogether now: "Oh Sammy Sammy. Sammy Sammy Sammy Sammy Allerdyce". "We are Premier League, say we are Premier League". "Show us your trophies"

Shearer fo tha Toon. No Championship experience whatsoever, 12.5% win rate, perfect for you jokers.

Greed greed greed has got Newcastle where it is today. From the time that teletubby Shepard and that fat slob Hall were found out mocking the Toon Army for its blind loyalty. I hope the club signs Shearer as manager and allows him to build a club in his mould. Get rid of those gutless sponging facelesss wonders that masquarade in the team each week. Very few shouls survive the cull.

By Mark B. Posted June 14 2009 at 10:42 AM.

What's happened to the toon has been waiting to happen for four years. Too many manager's, too many big time 'charlie' signings who've only signed for the money and boardroom staff who see us as a way of making a quick buck. Alan Shearer is'nt the man to take my beloved toon back into the Premiership, we need an experienced manager who can sign ordinary players and turn them into a great team. I for one feel that if we don't get out act together soon, we'll become another Leeds or Nottingham Forest. We need a Cloughie type of manager who has the respect of the dressing room and can get a normal team like us playing good attacking football. Mike Ashley, please sign someone like Terry Venables, we need to get back up the first time of asking, or we will be doomed in the championship!

By Paul Carter. Posted June 14 2009 at 10:49 AM.

I am from the south and my fiancee is a geordie!! It hasnt worked for Mike Ashley but regardless fans must understand he has put loads of money into the club. I am not a positive or negavtive fan of his, but you find any fan off the streets losing 100million plus into a club. Another championship club and below will be glad even for £1m to stay afloat!! Stop being on Ashley back and move on - he is selling, what more do you want!!

By clem. Posted June 14 2009 at 10:06 AM.

Newcastle have also been caught up in the expences scandal.
It seems they have been claiming for silver polish since 1969.

By John O. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:25 AM.

AC did a great job at Charlton, however, hes done nothing since,a bit of a one trick pony. Why not approach his brother....he managed the Who and they were on top of thier game for years!

By barry feeley. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:39 AM.

Have Newcastle considered Joe Royle as a potential candidate? He plays the sort of football the Geordies like and has had a very similar experience with City a few years ago.
Personally I think Shearer in the situation that Newcastle are in right now is an absolute risk!

By Colin's Bell End. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:54 AM.

Don't be so stupid curbs done wonders for us at our club and we would take him back in a moment you would be lucky to have him shearer is a no body in managment stupid georgies

By CAFC. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:39 AM.

DON'T YOU MEAN " GEORDIES"? TYPICAL HALF WIT SOUTHERN DAFTNESS. EVEN WITH CASH. THEY HAVE NO CLASS.

" Leeds and Newcastle are England's biggest failures in a century of football "

Nah, mate,I think you will find Bristol City and Plymouth Argylle are bigger failures than Leeds and Newcastle.

By ijjc. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:57 AM.

Excellent idea. Shearer is just using his image to propel himself as manager. He really does not have the credentials.

By Hamad Lone. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:57 AM.

ashley is an idiot he is putting all of his eggs in one basket and hoping to sell, if no sale happens then his investment will be worth even less by the time he has ruiened the club get sheare in charge and get the players in we need now before they go to other clubs you mug. how the hell did you become a ritch man? god knows you must have been very lucky. you keep making silly statements that giving shearer was the best thing you have done, then do it. you are making us a laughing stock and its disrispectfull

By kallam anderso. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:29 AM.

Curbishley aint got the bottle to manage the toon. We have had enough quitters at our club, and we dont need anymore!!

By jim caine. Posted June 14 2009 at 5:27 AM.

nufc supporters still believe everything will be ok and they will bounce back up,this time next year reality will kick in. best they can hope for is to stay in the championship. aslhey could do a ken bates and put then into bankrupcy and f""ck the club. next time you vist st. james it could only be ashleys shop and a kfc

By owen. Posted June 14 2009 at 4:26 AM.

It doesn't matter who they get in as manager, Newcastle will be very lucky to even make the play-offs next year. Leeds and Newcastle are England's biggest failures in a century of football
